It's not the people that you include but the ones that you exclude is what gets my interest. How about those nice people who simply refused your religion, you know like 99.9% of humanity? How about children and babies of parents that would have nothing to do with your religion? I'm looking right now at pages 208 and 209 of the Paradise book where I see ordinary people and children about to die.

the knee jerk reaction from most people who hold to a religious belief is "yes, of course it is.

" then when you point out that religion is used to motivate people to commit suicide bombings they will likely concede that this isn't always the case.. in one instance though someone said religion is always a force for good because the intentions are always good, even those of a suicide bomber.

In my opinion religion is a narrative or story that people make up or accept in order to understand and manipulate a mysterious world. Some religions may be more dangerous than others depending on the contents of their teachings, history or laws. Monotheistic religions like Hebrew, Christian or Muslim seem to be worse than polytheistic religions in inspiring authoritarianism and, in their fundamentalist versions, creating intolerance towards others.

Early, so called primitive, religions bonded humanity with its natural environment. Later, so called civilized, religions are a projection of a over-humanized authoritarian environment.

So is religion a force for good? In its early nature worshipping forms yes. But in its "civilized" forms no.

I'm not making light of it but no, it does not blow my mind. This organization, in my opinion, attracts mentally disturbed people. While you may find them everywhere I think there is a disproportionate number of mentally disturbed people in the JWs.

Why do you come to this site?

after all the years i have been here, i have slowly progressed to the point that the bible, god, and all the other religious stuff out there is just plain bullshit!!!

yet when i first came here and was told by some of the members that that is what i would logically come to, i did not believe them, and yet they were right.

i realize that a lot of people on this board have left, or are struggling with themselves or family to leave, yet many still believe.

Shortly before being disfellowshipped I sold my humble collection to a brother for five dollars. He kept insisting on giving me more. Shortly after I was disfellowshipped I dumped my entire collection of "Truth" books in sixty-some different languages. The Russian version had the word Pravda printed on the spine, a sure measure of the Writing Committees' lack of irony. Now I wish I would have kept it all and expanded my collection.

Do You Really Trust The Police?

in the local paper there are 2 different towns that are dealing with possible police misconduct.

one situation involves thousands of dollars worth of pot stolen from the police locker where the drugs were supposed to be safe.

now the feds and state are involved in finding out who was responsible for the theft.

handling accidents, clean up, directing traffic etc. Where I live Traffic Control Officers do most of that job.
recovering stolen property And, like the example I gave, keeping some of it.
providing security for public events Private security can do that as well.
apprehending shoplifters and other theives From what I've seen, private security is the first to apprehend a shoplifter though I agree that other thieves would require a police force.
responding to domestic disturbances to protect and insure the peace What did Tribal people do for millenia before police were invented?
helping people who are broke down at the side of the road You can have Traffic Control Officers do the same thing.

This is not an argument against the existence of police per se but it does reduce the numbers needed.

No, I do not trust them. As for that 'one in a million' or even one in a thousand cliche it is absurd to think that any institution or group of people has such a fantastically high degree of integrity. Second, from what I've personally seen and first hand reports I've heard they; kick frail and homeless people sleeping on a bus bench, steal your weapons after recovering them from thiefs who burglarized your home, rape your sister, beat up on people they've chased on the highways, etc. None of these examples came from the media.

Where I live I see Hispanic people reading the literature all the time. Once I came into a laundromat specifically to collect the half dozen or so mags that they had and I was stopped by the owner. He wasn't a JW but was curious as to why I was picking them up. I told him but he requested that I leave them alone because his customers (mostly Hispanic) liked to read them.
