I grew up in Northern Michigan...my Sister still lives there.
Here are a few tidbits of my opinion about the economy up there...
It's ALWAYS been BAD. They're like a third world country I swear! Third world countries don't feel recession because they don't have money to begin with.
Unless you know someone or related to someone with their own company, you can't possibly hope to get a good paying (Great pay up there is about $14.00 per hour, you'd be considered RICH) job so you get stuck working at the local bar, gas station or WalMart for the rest of your life. When we go to visit up there...people that have been working at the same gas station since I was barely old enough to see over the counter, are still there.
Northern Michigan has always been a great place to visit...but I couldn't live there ever again unless I had a pension that was a sure thing.
This is just my assessment of what it's like up there. Take it for what it's worth. =)

You could offer them WT's everytime you see them in the backyard....that would surely keep them in their front yard.
Or...
You could put up a curtain...I've seen stuff like that on home and garden shows...they put together frame out of pipe and hang 'outside material' from it, of course that will take a little sewing on your part. Then you can make different curtains to match the season...Or whatever...the room divider/privacy wall thing is a good idea too.

Questions for Americans...
by highdose inthis isn't meant to be insulting, this is stuff i honestly want to know from you guys....
do you call it "fall" rather than "authum" ( spelt that wrong).
"dipers" instead of "nappies"?.
-
Phee
WHY?...
"sidewalk" instead of "pavement"....depends on where you're from in the USA...Ashphalt, sidewalk, pavement, walkway, boardwalk, macadam, concrete, cement, blacktop, tar, path....etc...
Why do so many of you demonise alcohol? ....We do?? Everything in moderation dear.
why do you love british accents?...I love them because they make everything sound so damn clever! LOL...Like saying "Brilliant" or "Bloody hell"...even "Rubbish in the bin" sounds more clever than "Trash in the can".

Phee, be proud of your father! It took a real man, a real Christian, to stand up for his values in the face of such opposition. May we all follow his lead!
_____
GL,
I am so very proud of him! Thanks! =)
I don't think I could have asked for a better father. He did a few stupid things...like not go to the authorities when I was raped...But, I understand why. The org. makes really smart people do really stupid things! IMO.
Perhaps his reasons were simple....he was also 'born in', had been DF'ed once before and knew what it was like to be ignored.
But he did so many other things that I know some JW's would have gasped at! For one small example, if a b-day celebration was going on, he would wait while the song was being sang to whoever, and then have cake with everyone. If he was questioned, he would say "It's just cake that I'm eating that HAPPENS to be here, coincidently, on someone's b-day! There's no demons in it, get over it!"
His bestfriend wasn't a JW, ever. In fact, his bestfriend was, and still is, the one person I've met that can substitute ANY word with the F-word...lol! But the man has a heart of gold, just rough around the edges.
My Dad told the Elders off every chance he could get.... He loved watching his grandchildren opening christmas presents, birthday presents...searching for colored eggs...all of it, he thought it was "neat". He LOVED Christmas lights on houses and wished we could decorate ours...(Which he was couseled for cuz he said it in a car group out in service) ....etc...
I guess it's why I didn't make a big fuss out of things and still don't. He took the mystery and demons out of everything.
He did play along with the rules, for the most part, of being a JW...but he never let us forget who we are and to try and rise above the pettiness that is promoted among the 'brotherhood'. I could go on and on about him...the good, the bad and the ugly...My father was just a 'good man' to sum it all up.
*sigh* I miss him terribly.

Hrmmm....
I was 'born in' and I can't really say one way or another whether it was 'better' or not.
My father was a 'cool' JW and my mother was an irrational JW (and still is). I think it really depends on your social situation and family dynamics. My father being 'cool' allowed me to see the realities in the world and be a logical thinker, while my mother didn't approve, she allowed it to continue because my father was 'the head of the house'.
My father didn't do 'family study' with us because, in his words "They get enough from meeting preparation and having to set through it on meeting nights..." My mother hated this! But I understand what his logic was....Why cram it into our heads even more when the society does a great job?
I was also raped by a MS while 'in' and it was brushed under the rug.....I was also raped by a family member that was also a JW... Both cases dissmissed by the KH 'authorities' and not dealt with by the police. I believe that was another disadvantage to being 'raised in'.
I was one of the lucky ones, when I left, my family still treated me as though nothing were different. That's where my father's 'cool' side really shown through. He would say "You're still my children and my obligation and I love you no matter what you choose." Not your typical JW answer. He believed he would be 'blood guilty' if he left us out on our own like the society said to do. He was couseled by the elders and he told them flat out that he would not shun us. (all 4 of us kids left)
I'll tell you, that display of fatherly affection and Christ-like love is what has kept me a believer in Christ to this day. I believe my father had a lot figured out even if he didn't share it with us. (He passed away almost 7 years ago) Those types of people that show mercy and love and forgiveness are true Christians and true humanitarians. Showing love for thy neighbor, family and friends...regardless of religion, race or age, is what I will choose to mimic. Not the parroting, hoping-every-one-else-will-die-so-I-can-have-their-house-after-armageddon, self righteous, adult and children abusing and covering it up, cult minded, harrassing, you can never do enough, lying and misguiding BS of the people that call themselves "Jehovah's Witnesses".

The reason I said OCD is because these 'ticks' of her's were almost rhythmic, like three face ticks, 7 movements in her fingers...stuff like that.
OCD sufferers sometimes have outward actions of their mental rituals. In fact, the two are sometimes intertwined. "28-50% of people with Tourette syndrome have symptoms of OCD." -Quote taken from 'The free dictionary'
Anyways...I was just making a point that there was definitly something wrong and it was the best way I can describe her actions. I'm not a doctor, I didn't personally oversee her diagnosis...so, I'm sorry if you found my diagnostician skills lacking.
Sheesh!

Well, I'm not sure that it had anything to do with being a pioneer, perhaps just a psycho...
If the householder didn't want to talk and started closing the door, he would place his book bag in the door and continue, usually yelling by this time, at the person. Or he would put his foot in the door. I remember only going to the door ONCE with him, it was enough, and he did it. I walked away completely embarrassed!
Another pioneer in our hall had ticks...like turrets or something, perhaps OCD? I don't know what was wrong with her. She ended up being diagnosed with some mental illness and couldn't stand being in large crowds. I felt sorry for her. Aside from being brainwashed, she was a truly sincere and sweet lady.
One other pioneer had...I dunno what to call it...Well, the story is this; This guy and his Wife were VERY sweet! In fact, I had them over for dinner here last summer. I've known them since I was like 5. Anyways...Him and his Wife cleaned one of the grocery stores after hours, but when he was having a bad day (because he had epilepsy) my parents would go and help his Wife at the store. Well, one time when they went to help, I was at home with this guy alone. We were setting there just talking about my school work and stuff and he got REALLY quiet. What little bit of color he had in his face completely drained. I thought he was about to have a seizure! So I just sat and stared at him waiting...
What happened next both scared the crap outta me and has been burned into my memory to this day...
While I sat there staring at him...it looked like a camera flashed. But 100X brighter. The light was SO bright and it flooded the room so completely, you couldn't see anything but the light. No furniture, no color, no floor. The hair on my neck stood up. It only lasted a second at best, but it felt like 20. Afterwards I asked him what it was...he was dead silent, wouldn't, or couldn't, talk. I stood up and looked outside to see if it was lightning. Not a cloud in the sky, there was no thunder afterwards...if it was lightning, it was REALLY close, we definitly should have heard thunder.
After a minute or two, he finally started speaking, he told me that it happens to him 'all of the time'!!
So I was relating this story to my Brother... I didn't even get to the white light part of the story...and he finished my story for me! It happened with him too when he was with this guy! Don't know what it was...still don't. But I think that qualifies as an 'odd thing' with pioneers...doesn't it? lol

Goldensky,
Thankyou for sharing your story. It is interesting when this 'epiphany' occurs. Whether you're in or outside the organization even! I had been out for over 10 years before I decided that it wasn't the truth!
You seem like a strong and beautiful person and I hope that you find all of the peace and comfort you seek. Welcome to the board!
Love,
