The Global Flood
by coldfish ini've just read an intersting article on the flood to do with dates and whether is was truly global or a regional flood.. http://www.commentarypress.com/essay-flood.html.
my father used to be an elder for many years and the flood was one of the things that made him walk away not just from the jw but also belief in the bible.
he was hung up on issues like the flood taking place about 3500 bc and how that fit in with the pyramids.. i don't know much about egyptian history or the ages of the big pyramids, but his reasoning was if the flood wiped out every human on earth except noah etc then at 3500 bc there were only 8 people on earth.

...and it's your and their choice to see it as evidence of divine design. It does not strike me as evidence of divine design though, and therefore to my mind, seeing God in a gourd and a solar eclipse are entirely equivalent.
I bow to no-one in my awestruck astonishment when I contemplate the wonders of nature, from the beautiful strangeness of the atom to the majesty of the universe. However, I am quite easy and settled in my mind when I contemplate these wonders from my personal viewpoint as an athiest.
I can certainly sympathise with anyone who, when contemplating solar eclipses, is moved to see divine influence therein. As a free thinking individual I would certainly not criticise anyone for feeling that way. However, objective proof of divine influence it is absolutely not.

But I think He was precise enough to catch our attention.
Well there's your answer folks, the Almighty was precice enough to get our attention. Well done God for nearly getting it right.
Is anyone else seeing in their minds the bit from Life Of Brian, where the mob is chasing Brian through the market asking for a sign?
Show us a sign, oh lord!
Silence, shallow one, has he not already given us the Sandal?
Follow the Gourd!
Look how he has arranged the heavens so that they almost line up every now and again! Now that's a sign!

ditto, nice post City Fan.
a christian - you need to read City Fan's post carefully and make sure you understand it properly. No planet is exactly a sphere, and no planetary orbit is exactly a circle. When you see figures for diameters on websites, you're looking at averages and approximations - NOT exact numbers. When you quote them here as exact numbers, you just look silly. Abaddon's right on this one, and you're just going to have to swallow it at some point I'm afraid!
The sun-moon diameter ratio is APPROXIMATELY 400, NOT EXACTLY 400. Please stop saying that it's exactly 400, based on approximations you've lifted off websites.

naaah, only joking...
It absolutely cracked me up when he did this "Just heard Englebert Humperdink died" after the interval of one of his shows. Actually, it sounds a bit sick just written here in cold black and white, but it was very funny - trust me. One of those things where you just had to be there I suppose. He kept it up for about 15 minutes, with the "only joking - no seriously" hand gestures.
Jesus - I wish I hadn't started this now! I'm trying to describe a visual gag on a message board. D'OH -

Read the bible to your girlfriend and avoid late night TV.
by IronGland inif you are courting, be determined to remain chaste, even when talking on the phone.
an engaged christian woman named leticia says: "my fiance and i have read together bible-based articles on staying chaste.
we appreciate the way they have helped us maintain a clean conscience.

"You can successfully expel unclean thoughts from your mind by dwelling on upright things."
There you go lads, stop dwelling on your upright thing and start dwelling on upright things instead.

End of the World
by jwcurious in.
i'm new here, i married a jw and i have just started attending the meetings, and it confuses me alot.. but back to my question, my grandmother once told me that jw's in the 50's proclaimed the end of the world and sold all their personal belongings and went up on a mountian and waited for god, has anyone else heard of this?
