Documentary About The Flood and Noah's Ark
by Blue Grass inabout a week or two ago i watched a documentary about the flood in noah's day entitled "in search of noah's ark".
two things i found very interesting in this program is a theory that one person had about how they believed the flood was caused due to a meteor hitting the ocean creating a tsunami that flooded the entire earth.
scientist were unanimous in their view that this is a very plausible scenario and that there is no way to rule this possibility out.

Another thought: If there WERE remnants of an ancient Noachian ark languishing at the top of Mt. Ararat in Turkey, rather than blocking any access to it, don't you think the Turkish gov't would be tripping over themselves to set up a tourist site and charge plenty of moola for access to it? There'd be travel agencies in Turkey dedicated to arranging visits, with nice fat receipts going to the gov't, special fees for visas to enter the country to visit Mt. Ararat, etc.

Welcome, Feg! Firstly, you have an interesting handle; I'm curious as to its meaning, if you feel like sharing.
Second, you might want to release the caps lock on your keyboard, since all caps is like YELLING AT SOMEONE, and I'm sure you weren't intending that.
Thirdly, I'm not sure your treasure hunter analogy works so well. If the WT/FDS/GB are like treasure hunters, they're treasure hunters who dig like crazy in one spot all the while declaring, "This is where God is telling us to dig and if you don't dig with us right here, you don't love Jehovah!" until its starkly obvious there's nothing there. Then they run to a new spot and start digging like crazy all the while repeating the same thing. If someone asks about all of the empty holes surrounding them, their reply is "Holes? What holes? Oh, THOSE holes--apostates dug them!"

I'm reading the Bible cover to cover...
by homeschool in....what the heck have i gotten myself into .
as a sidenote, in genesis 21....abraham threw isaac a party on the day he was weaned.
check out the history on that and find out what other religions believe about that (i checked out the jewish & baptist websites).

I probably should add that such a widow would be subject to heavy social opprobrium, which would in itself probably enough to discourage such action. But from a strictly legal perspective, I don't think there was any prohibition.

"it just feels to me like the bible was written by men & not by god..."
Right. When you start to understand the cultural, social and political setting, ie, what was going on in the ANE at the time, it becomes a little easier to understand. Why the big laws on fornication and adultery? Having children was the most important thing anyone could do, and for a man, having plenty of sons to protect the settlement, carry on the name and leave the farm to was critical. Tight control on women meant tight control on fertility--you wanted to know that the baby she was carrying was YOURS and no one else's. You might have noted that that the laws re virginity were only imposed on women, not men.
Actually, there is no law against fornication per se in the Mosaic Law Code (please, correct me if I'm wrong). There are laws against sleeping with a virgin (damaging someone else's goods, as Nark brought out) and sleeping with someone else's wife (stealing someone else's goods) but there's no explicit prohibition against, for instance, a widow without family sleeping with an unmarried guy she's not related to, as long as she's not in her father's house (b/c she's once more her father's property and good for re-sale). Each of the laws restricting sex have to do with either woman's value as property, incest or controlling who the father of offspring is (adultery).

Attended DC this weekend, quick recap...the End may not be imminent could take a million years but its still coming
by shopaholic inattended the dc this weekend in california with a jw acquaintance of mine that wanted to go 'jw man-hunting' and didn't want to go alone.
she knows i'm not active and haven't been to a meeting in a long time and have no interest in jw men.
i think she feels like she has the best of both worlds with me, anyway it was interesting...the gb appears to be changing their tune and i don't think the masses even realize it.. br.

Shop, very interesting! You are indeed a good and loyal friend. Tell me, did Br. Splane use the word "imminent" at all? Did any of the other speakers? As has been noted on other threads about the DC, the word "imminent" seems to be the key word at many of the conventions--it sure as hell was at the one I attended. But then, we didn't have the emminent privilege of hosting a GB--who, of course, has the inside scoop on what's really going on!

Yay for Womanhood! Female Min.Serv's under consideration.
by cattails inthe "priscilla" deliberations.. gb subcommittees now re-considering role of women in the organization.. example of phoebe as "diakonos" revisited.. could women be appointed to ministerial servant positions in view of the need in congregations?.

And if the only way to come to the "truth" is to be drawn by God, why isn't he drawing more men, hmmm?

I'll believe it when I see it. Women are still not allowed to sit at either end of the table in Bethel dining rooms. Why? They might get thinking they're the table "head," a position only for males, even if its a 19 year old eating his first meal there. Crazy, what?
