New here
by Change Name ini had been studying with the jehovah's witnesses for the last couple years.
they have been interesting study sessions and have learned quite a bit about them and their beliefs.
much of what they teach is what i had learned through personal bible study.. growing up was normal.

Welcome, sweetheart!!
I feel for you - that restriction of your husband's - not allowing you to work or attend college...
I'd say, work AROUND him - talk to a career counsellor, talk to a social worker.
You're over 21 and you have rights that he CANNOT keep from you.

Is this where the idea of hell came from?
by Inisc inarticle on mail online about a greek cave found in the 1950s (sorry i don't know how to link it).
experts believe may have started the hades myth.. found it very interesting to think this may have been behind the ideas of superstitious men writing about things in their environment they simply just didn't understand.
if any of the more tech savvy posters could link it?.

That would be the source for believing that the underworld was a cold land of shadows...
For a concept of a "fiery hell", I suspect that we must look towards volcanic eruptions.

"This is likely NOT a reference to the JW video. For ages the action of jerking off while a guy is spouting bullshit has been the practice..." Wasanelderonce...
Oh, I think that it is...
After all, the temptation to pass along that link to the Watchtower's masturbation video, to the "Jon Stewart Show", must have been just TOO tempting for somebody....

Believers, do you believe in evolution?
by everchangingworld inafter leaving, i still couldn't wrap my head around evolution (after the years of seing "intelligent design" in everything around me).. there's a series of videos that give a good intro to evolution and critical thinking.
they've probably been posted here before, but, for any new members, these are worth watching.. evolution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdddbyilel0.
critical thinking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6olpl5p0fmg.

"...Fancy having the audacity to gatecrash on a thread for believers..." Cedars
Yeah, I was a little confused by the thread title, too...
I figured it was aimed at Christian believers who also accepted the theory of evolution, but since SO many creationists/'intelligent design' believers claim that atheists "BELIEVE" in evolution, I wasn't sure...

Just Because Someone Is A JW "Apologist", It Doesn't Mean WE Have To Be Condescending & Nasty
by minimus ini know certain apologists might rub us the wrong way, but let's not treat them like their pieces of sh*t.. and i know certain posters might rub us the wrong way, but let's not be so quick to beat everybody down that's not of our same reasoning.. just saying..

Ah, correct me if I'm wrong, but...
Shouldn't "apologists" do some damn apologizing first???

Jehovah's Witnesses dismayed by new magazine format from Watchtower Society.
by Balaamsass inwow.
i was surprised this week by calls from active jws complaining about the new magazine format, and more begging for money from the platform.. frankly i was surprized by this reaction since this is old news to jwn members.
i guess actually shuffling to the bookroom and grabbing the new "awake tracts" minus the inside cover forward ...awakened many sleepy, catatonic, bored jws who never read the things or go on the internet anyway.. any feedback from other areas?.

Oh, and the fifteen-minute long "prayers" that would come at the end of the day's program - or worse yet, at the end of the assemblies... Just when we kids were SO glad it was finally ALL OVER and were primed to take off for some REAL vacation!!!
Yuk, BAD times, bad times...

"i'm only 28, but i remember the district assemblies being much longer, the lunches shorter, the 3 weekly meetings, etc. i was quite surprised when i was still in to see everything dramatically scaled down. i remember the first district assembly where the lunch break was nearly 2 hours, in total there was only like 3.5 hours of talks for the whole day. are they running out of things to talk about?..." secondary priorities, page #3
Geez, you young WHIPPERsnappers had it EASY!!!
I was 'in' during the 1960's - 70s - you know, the big run-up [or should that be, 'run ahead' ??] for 1975 - when the Watchtower did "not" claim that "Armageddon" was coming...
The damned assemblies were SEVEN days long - sat in the HOT sun and burned up over a week of our vacation for that crap, EVERY year...
At least they DID provide lunches - yukky, white-bread-refined-sugar-crisco-oil heavy lunches - after a couple of those assemblies' lunches, my family wisely chose to start eating out...
My parents never tumbled to the "official" lodging either, thank goodness - nothing would have been worse than being stuck in a Jehovah's Witness assembly during vacation and then having to put up with them AFTER assembly hours, too... Oh, and the constant refrain back then was "DON'T GO to COLLEGE! You'll lose your BRAINS to SATAN just before the "GREAT TRIBULATION" starts..."
Sheeesh.

"All I know is that it is so much easier being a JW these days than 30 years ago.
Less time spent at the meetings, less time spent as a pioneer, half size magazines (so much less to read,) No Friday night at the circuit assembly, 3 days at the district assembly instead of four. ..." alanv, page 1
They made things easier because "THE END ™ " is SOOOOOOOO close now, "just around the corner", don't you know???
