i was amazed an ex-skynyrd guitarist could play to an empty house.. am i living in the past or do skynyrd still rock..

Their music is still a big part of American Culture. Musicians like Kid Rock and Bands like Shinedown have very popular cover renditions of LS music. LS music is also in a number of recent movies.
In my opinion, LS will always rock :)

When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the handgun ban in the nation's capital in 2008, Representative Gabrielle Giffords applauded the ruling, calling gun ownership "an Arizona tradition." That she had co-signed a congressional amicus brief against the ban came as no surprise: she has always been pro-gun, and she represents a state with a history of proud gun ownership and lax gun laws.
So there is at least a touch of irony to the fact that her name is being invoked, following her attempted assassination on Saturday, in calls for tighter gun control. Paul Helmke, head of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, offered prayers for Giffords and decried "easy access to high-powered guns." New York Representative Carolyn McCarthy called the shooting "an illustration of why we must all work together to fight gun violence in America and keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of the wrong people."

I dont think any measure of gun control will be effective. Marijuana and other "hard" drugs are illegal, and it's still very easy for people to acquire them. Disclaimer... I dont own a gun and very likely never will. I have gone to shooting ranges as a kid with friends for target practice.
Like I said before -- It still looks likt this was an act of an insane person -- and its not political. Congresswoman Gifford was just a famous person and an easy target for this person to acheive a modicum of fame.

Preliminary investigation all points to the fact that the guy was unstable. I think any link to political parties is a bit premature. In the meantime, I think it's more constructive to discuss what good if any that could come out of this tragedy.
I feel for the ones who lost their family members -- the husband who stood in front of his wife to protect her and got shot in the head. That's the real loss here. Its always amazing how "normal people" commit selfless and heroic acts in the face of the gravest of danger.

Im not sure how to reconcile this. One part of me thinks that this is just a random act of violence - the other thinks it's politically motivated. If it was politically motivated - it shows just how unstable people react partisan rhetoric. Sad day for he family and friends.
