Who Or What Influenced You The Most To Leave The Organization?

What influenced me the most? one word.... Reason...
It was always clear to me that the Bible and specifically Jehovah's Witnesses doctrine about the bible were not grounded in reality.
My parents converted when I was young, and I left as a teenager to live with "unbeleiving relatives". I went back because I was foolish, thinking that "I was special" and there was a religion that made me feel that way (only our super secret club gets to live forever on a paradise earth)...
The "clincher" was reading Crisis Of Conscience. Im glad I got to thank Ray (and got a response from him) before he passes.
cheers.

Beautiful episode. TNG is my favorite by far. I liked Voyager and Enterprise (which was just getting good whtn they canceled it). I never got into DS9. It was too steeped in political struggles for my liking.
The new Star Trek "reboot" movie was awsome.
I sometimes wonder if humans could ever progress far enough to fulfill some of our Science Fiction...
I could really go for some synthahol or "Tea, Earl Grey.... hot!" (gotta love those replicators).
May you all live long and prosper!

Is this a forum for JW issues or a poorly designed political and celebrity site?
by Band on the Run init appears to me that even in the few months that i have been here there is less and less emphasis on jehovah's witnesses and anything remotely related to jws and more very poor posts about politics, foreign affairs and celebrities.
i can't omit the juvenile sex ones, which i find lacking in erotic nature.
it seems the 6th grade boys are meeting in the locker room.. the posts that involve jws have a very different tone from the drivel posted on others.

I find that some of the political conversations here are educational -- I think that former JWs, all have the "Paradise Earth" government in the back of our minds which "taints" our view of government and society. Also if this site only had JW topics, I would quickly become depressed. I want to move on with my thinking and discover new things and ideas and not just rehash all the old JW stuff.
Actually I think this site has a really good balance between current events, political discussions, friendly chat and JW stuff.
Thanks Simon and all who post here
here's to y'all

Atlas Shrugged Part 1
by littlerockguy inwent and saw atlas shrugged part 1 at the rave theater here in little rock friday night.
i was surprised it showed here since it had such a limited showing.. anyway i was really surprised at how well it was done on such a limited budget and a very tight and short schedule to have the whole picture done and it really followed the book very well.
i went to the 7:15 showing and the theater was packed but but not sold out.

I have a question, At what point does my "self-interest" stop with regard to the public at large? Is my self-interest affected negatively when the public at large suffers? When there are groups of people who cannot provide for themselves, how does the rational long term thinker justify charity or "tax" or whatever mechanism is used to assist those who cannot help themselves?
Also, it seems to me that in a pure sense, the use of rational long term self-interest breaks down with "normal people". Just how many persons in the past 4 years did not act in their own long term self-interest which nearly brought about collapse our economy? There were a lot of logical and rational thinkers behind the mortgage crisis who looked that the betterment of their short term gain and were blind to the wider consequence.
Is the concept of rational long term self-interest even possible for enough people to make it a workable social/financial model?
Can more regulation "save us from ourselves"? It education the key?
These subjects are quite interesting for me as I have only begun to read and think about these issues (having been a brain-dead JW for most of my life).

lawmakers in tehran have recently proposed a bill in parliament that would criminalize dog ownership, formally enshrining its punishment within the country's islamic penal code.

...Those days of tacit acceptance may soon be over, however. Lawmakers in Tehran have recently proposed a bill in parliament that would criminalize dog ownership, formally enshrining its punishment within the country's Islamic penal code. The bill warns that that in addition to posing public health hazards, the popularity of dog ownership "also poses a cultural problem, a blind imitation of the vulgar culture of the West." ...
Maybe they would be better off it they just outlawed living. That would truely set them apart from the west...

When our daughter was probably 5, we took her to McDonalds for lunch and ordered her a Big Mac and a small fry per her request (happy meals were not her thing). Upon getting the big burger and small fries, she pulled a long french fry out of the package that was probably 5 or more inches long, held it up and proclaimed, "I thought I asked for small fries"...
We still laugh at that...
