  before my mother became a jehovah's witness i remember.

  the fun of christmas and opening the beautifully wrapped.

  I beleive that ignoring holidays and birthdays etc. also hides/masks the passage of time from the JW rank and file. When people put significant planning into a special event day (like a birthday), it further punctuates that arrival of that day and makes the passage of time more apparent.

  The Witnesses are encouraged to live each day the same as the last -- this disconnects them from the passage of time and further hides the errors and changes of the JW teachings.

  As a kid we has regular family celebrations until I was 5 or 6. Then my parents got the "Truth".. We no longer spent any time with my grandparents or extended relatives on holidays etc.

  Update on our dount shop

  it has been awhile for me to post anything.

  i have been very, very busy.

  yesterday i past all of my rough-in electrical and plumbing inspections all my drywall will be up today and tape and muded.

  T-ADD -- May wife and I are also small business owners with a couple of employees -- it's been a hard 5 years with the recession and all, but we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

  new york (ap) wal-mart stores inc., the nation's largest private employer, is scaling back the eligibility of health care coverage offered to future part-timers and dramatically raising premiums for many of its full-time workers.

  industry observers say the changes could have implications for millions of other workers, as more companies on the fence could replicate its moves.. the discounter, which employs more than 1.4 million workers, said the changes were forced by rising health care costs.

  Actually it may be better to get employers out of the health care business... Why do we have employers providing health care, yet we dont have them providing auto insurance or home owners insurance. Originally employers were in the game to get employees at a better overall cost -- so it was cheaper for them to provide "benefits" than to pay employees cash (especially with you consider the ~7.5% employment tax - employers share of the FICA/medicare tax).

  Also have you ever tried to compare insurance plans and rates between two companies? It's always apples vs oranges. One plan costs $750 a month and covers such and such and the other plan costs $795 a month and covers this N' that...

  Standardize the plans then people can compare rates.

Industry observers say the changes could have implications for millions of other workers, as more companies on the fence could replicate its moves.

  The discounter, which employs more than 1.4 million workers, said the changes were forced by rising health care costs. All future part-time employees working less than 24 hours a week, on average, will not be covered under the plan, starting next year.

  Premiums will rise for many existing workers, and the company will reduce by half the amount it contributes for each worker to help pay for health care expenses not covered under their plan. Tobacco users will be particularly hit hard, seeing premiums more than double compared with increases of as much as 41 percent for singles, according to Making Change at Wal-Mart, a group backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union , which has been pressuring Wal-Mart on worker rights.

  anchorage, alaska (ap) an anchorage endodontist performed a root canal on a big tooth in a very big patient a full-grown siberian tiger.. dr. doug luiten worked on 300-pound kunali measuring nearly 7 feet from backside to nose thursday at the alaska zoo.. "it's the longest tooth i've ever worked on," luiten said of more than three-inch (8 centimeter) canine.. the zoo had to order some special instruments to accommodate the longer tooth, and even had to modify those during the root canal.. http://news.yahoo.com/alaska-dentist-performs-root-canal-tiger-080352907.html.

  James Beverley's book on Penton's expulsion now on Abebooks

  "crisis of allegiance" is a slim, but excellent book written by a professor of religion on the events in lethbridge, alberta, around 1981, that led to the expulsion of jim penton, a jw who believed he was anointed but also happened to think the wts had some doctrines wrong.. it's a great read that ties in quite closely with the campaign to get rid of ray franz, showing the dirty tricks used by the society to rid themselves of someone who dared to question them.

  penton was an academic who the society loved when he wrote a book on their human rights legal challenges ... but when he expanded his research and decided to do a book on their history, pow!

  they began regarding him with great suspicion.
