Mean World Syndrome and its "support" of JW mindset

i've been reading about "mean world syndrome" and was wondering about its impact on the jw mindset.

we take in a large amount of news media that mostly reports "negative" stories (wars, natural disasters, crime, failing economy and bad traffic).

this tends to alter our thinking that these are common occurrences.

I've been reading about "Mean World Syndrome" and was wondering about its impact on the JW mindset. We take in a large amount of news media that mostly reports "negative" stories (wars, natural disasters, crime, failing economy and bad traffic). This tends to alter our thinking that these are common occurrences. But, statistically our risk of any of these horrific fates is pretty minimal (except the traffic, but you’ll just have to bear with me).

Thousands of years ago we lived in small villages and little cities - news we received had a greater impact on us directly. For example a lion attack within our village or city meant that we had to be more aware when out in the fields. We would alter our behavior to avoid the attack. If we were right, we might be able to avoid getting eaten. But, if we were wrong, there were no corrective actions to let us know that there were no lions to eat us and we didn’t need to be on "alert".

I think that both of these effects "train" our brain to think the world is a much worse place than it really is.

I get this statement all the time from my JW family. That this system is in Satan's control. Or that "this or that" is put here to test our faith. "Blinded the eyes/minds of the unbeleivers".

How do you logically rebut statements like these? I want to build "seeds of doubt" and not hit them with a 2x4...

it is an excellent read.

i even wrote to the guy, james caputo, to show appreciation for his courage to post his story on the www all those years ago when there weren't yet a ton of ex-jw sites.

Quite honestly I checked out a long time ago, but I was riddled with guilt. My wife was 10x my guilty feelings-- of course she's a professional ScapeGoat. We both were "Released from our burdens" by getting real information and cross-checking it with sources. I have to give credit to people like Mary, Blondie, Narkissos, Leolaia, TD, Isaac Austin, Chalam, (of course) Simon, and many othes who contribute an encyclopedias woth of information here.

Floor buffing mishaps?

ever slipped on the stripper?

had someone track through your wax?

lost control of your buffer?

I need to scrub the floor at my business. We've got about 1400 sq ft of floor tile. Any recomendations on what machine to use? I remember the last time I used a floor scrubber it was a 24inch pad... just huge! I felt like I had a tiger by the tail.. I'd rather not repeat that experience
