I understand the concept of grace - well, I understand several of them, depending on which variety of Christian I ask.

But, I'm trying to find kind of a direct answer here - is your position that our salvation - provided by God - is from ourselves?

Typically I would say that we need salvation from ourselves, we tend to be selfish and "wicked" people, capable opf great good and great "evil".

Just asking to clarify, first, to make sure I'm not misunderstanding you. Because if that's the case, I don't understand how this actually occurs in any meaningful way.

I'm also asking because later in your post you described us answering for crimes committed - which seems to take salvation and grace in another direction entirely. Where we are not being saved from ourselves - but we are being saved from some unspecified entity who is going to make us pay for our sins.

I'm looking for specifics, moreso than prose. I want to know what - or who - we are being saved from. In this instance, I don't think "ourselves" qualifies, because we aren't talking about being saved from self-destructive behavior, like an addiction or something.

Man has so much value to God that God was willing to Die in Human form, in the form of his Son, to show HOW much man is worthy...He did it to show us not only his love, but that we are worthy of his love, worthy of salvation and worthy of the gift of Grace, even if we didn't/don't think we are.

Why do we need salvation or grace in the first place - in your opinion? What are we being saved from?

I know I too am capable of doing things that I would've never dreamed of even considering in otherwise 'normal' circumstances. It is the same for everyone, even you.

Sounds like the plot of "The Green Mile" to me. An entertaining story, but not very realistic.

Maybe I have too much faith in my fellow humans.

I often said to people that if Jesus came to the earth today, people would simply kill him again.

Do you really believe that?

In this day of 24 hour news networks and the ability to verify that people who are dead are actually dead - if we came across a guy who can raise the dead, cure the blind by spitting in their eyes and stretch salmon into forever, I think we'd keep him alive for a little while.

What a bizarre talk though.

a few weeks back, in the midst of the haiti tragedy, much discussion took place in cyberland about the tolerance [or indeed the insistence on] suffering by a loving god.

the furor over haiti has settled a bit [as unfortunately most tragedy is wont to do far too quickly in the human mind], but this persistent matter continues to chew at my subconscience.

Christianity is a PERSONAL "religion" or at least it should be and as such, each one of us has a unique and personal realtionship with God Via Jesus so, yes, you will ( and should) get varied answers to questions

Just one more comment on this...

Christians all know the same guy, right?

Let's say that I get three people who claim they are your friend, and ask them fairly nonspecific questions about you, which any real friend of yours should know. About how old is PSac? Is he outgoing or withdrawn? Does he have pets?

Then all three of them give me different answers.

Would I be justified in assuming that not only are none of them actually your friends, but they probably have never even met you?

Again, to be clear, I don't think God allows/permits/advocates suffering as a mass level and I think that at a personal level, we do enough of it to ourselves. BUT, IF God does allow for suffering, the only way I can RECONCILE that with God being a loving God is to view it like a parent that allows a child to suffer so that they can learn.
I hope that is more clear.

*Head spinning* I understand where you're going - the difference between us is simply that I don't see a need to "reconcile" the issue to uphold a preconception I have about the lord. I did way too much of that back in the day. "Jehovah just needs to prove to Satan that humans can't live in a world of earthquakes and other natural disasters!" I just weigh the evidence, and say "Either God hates us, he has no power, he isn't real, or he doesn't care." You know God personally, apparently, and know that none of those things can be true. Hence - reconciling seemingly impossible concepts.

To me, that seems a little like when they interview neighbors and relatives of convicted criminals. Inevitably, they can't imagine that the convict could have done such a thing. "He was such a quiet boy". And maybe they're right.

LOL, nothing so dramatic, it is just VERY personal, the only person I have shared it with is my wife and that's because she was instrumental in me finding Jesus.

I'm going to guess, then - that you provided God with a kind of "fleece test" involving your wife? Blink once if I'm close. ;-) Were you ever a JW? Just trying to figure out a timeline, since I don't think I've ever (actually) come across a Christian who found Jesus/God without ever opening a bible. Did it go, then - Find Jesus - Become a JW - Leave JW?
