Got a visit from door-to-door JW's!

today while i was home for a quick lunch break i got a knock at the door.

i opened the door and was surprised to see two elderly jehovah's witnesses women.

i haven't been called on since i've been out for four years, so this was a bit of surprise.

You shoulda let them keep thinking, "I know that guy from somewhere....." and gotten on with a bit of a convo if you could. Would have been interesting to see the wheels spinning in their mind as you brought up some things.

Had I not known either of them I would have simply listened and let the conversation go from there. But it was only four years, and despite the beard, I had to assume the one sister recognized me. It was strange that she didn't acknowledge me when I opened the door. Maybe she was shocked or maybe it was a weird japanese cultural thing or dementia or ...

Today while I was home for a quick lunch break I got a knock at the door. I opened the door and was surprised to see two elderly Jehovah's Witnesses women. I haven't been called on since I've been out for four years, so this was a bit of surprise. One lady introduced herself (who I didn't recognize) and her partner (an elderly japanese sister who had I book study with) and began to quickly go into her presentation.

I stopped her and said,"well I already know [your partner]." And I turned to her said, "Hello, how are you." Finally it dawned on the first sister who I was and she calmly said, "Tony, I'm sorry we can't talk to you." and turned around and began walking away. I called out after them, "I love you both. Have a good day."

It was a bit sad but also a little funny/ironic. I thought man, most people want to get rid of JW's when they come the door. I want to talk to them and they run away.

it may not be the saddest but it's up there.

"my sister's keeper" was a real tearjerker too..

"Grave of the Fireflies", without question. It is a Japanese animated film about two children that are orphaned when their village gets fire bombed during World War II. If you don't bawl during that movie I would question your humanity. :-)

OK here's a fresh idea --

Go to a JW convention.
Dress nicely in a suit or skirt. (Shave off that beard.)
Bring a folding chair and a tall skinny box simply marked 'DONATIONS'
Setup the box in a busy hallway and see what happens.

If per-chance passers by decide to put a little money in your box feel free to pass it on to a charity of your choice - perhaps support child abuses victims. If for some weird reason someone puts in a check marked 'WATCH TOWER', feel free to destroy it as they must have made a mistake.

Like we'll ever settle this once and for all, but here goes; ARE YOU A TRUE CHRISTIAN?

the watchtower says; "there is an enormous distinction between true christianity and the religion practiced by those who are christians in name only" - wt 1st october 2009. now, in the light of all the current controversy over the word 'atheist' and what it means can you see how irritating it is to have your frame of reference, be it a religious belief system or something else, redefined by others?

and usually it is redefined by those who have something to gain by the linguistic manipulation.. for the watchtower the gain is easy to see but what about the attempt by many believers to define atheism as a belief system?

could it be that equating rational atheism with belief is nothing more than an attempt to legitimize faith?.

Did You Sit for the National Anthem?

i never understood the convoluted "reasoning" on standing for the pledge of allegiance but sitting for the national anthem .... your thoughts or experiences, please.. thank you.. cc.

The unwritten rule in this area was that if you were already standing when the anthem started you could remain standing, you didn't have to rush to find a seat or sit down. So the custom was, when JW's went to sporting events they would remain standing at their seats prior to the game beginning so that when the National Anthem played they could say they were already standing and not have to sit down. I wasn't very comfortable with that loop-hole so I tended to just roam the hall or go to the restroom while the anthem played and return to my seat afterward. It also seemed to be a weird double standard that I could stand for the Pledge of Allegiance but I couldn't stand for the National Anthem. It wasn't like I was putting my hand over my heart and singing along while a tear ran down my cheek.

The Watchtower literature was in violation of Russian law. The law seeks to protect the religious rights of all of their citizens. Whether or not the law is good or bad is a matter of debate.

In the beginning of this matter the Watchtower could have made concessions to maintain freedoms such as ceasing to distribute literature in Russia or simply censoring some of the "extremist" statements the Government had issues with. (In Russia you simply cannot go door to door passing out tracts condemning all religions and showing meteors crashing into churches.) The Witnesses could have continued to meet and worship privately without sanction.

The hyprocrisy is that they will fight for their right to print what they want in a word court and turn around and persecute their own members who wish to exercise the very same religious freedom.

I think this case well highlights how integral the literature is in the life of Jehovah's Witnesses. (I would suggest for control and financing.) I know of one student in Australia who is currently working on her master's thesis on this various issue. I'm very eager to read it when she publishes it.

Before you get legally entangled I would double-check what the wire-tapping laws are like in your jurisdiction. In Illinois, where I live, it would be legally questionable for you to secretly record the meeting like you did unless all parties were informed of the recording, across the river in Missouri it is perfectly legal, as I understand. So the laws vary.
