While dating I was told that I needed to break it off with my girlfriend because she was "worldly". (She was raised in a JW household, but wasn't baptized yet.) I did break off - and they appointed me an MS - but then we secretly got back together and I was deleted as an MS. She ended getting baptized and we ended getting married and now we are out of the religion and happily married 15 years.

by truthseeker inwhen you announced your intention to marry, what did the elders say to your future bride/groom?.
in a long distance courtship, did you have any trouble getting a good "spiritual" reference?.

I've googled with no success. I need a date. When did the Watchtower discontinue food service at the District Conventions? I know it was sometime during the 1990's, but not sure of the year. A shasta cola to whoever can provide the date!

Stupid Rule: "Necessary Business" Is Acceptable With Disfellowshipped Family Members....
by minimus inand if you live with them, you can carry on in a somewhat "normal" relationship but if they move out, you must treat them like shit..

I believe it was at the last annual meeting where a member of the GB gave a talk and admitted that there is no allowance in the Bible for "necessary family business", but rather it something that the FDS has allowed and thus it should not be taken advantage of as a loophole for association.

JW Husbands - a learned domination?
by skeeter1 inare jw husbands bad people?
would you want your daughter to marry one?.
i ask because a male jw relative was baptised.

I don't think that the WT creates domineering husbands. I do believe that if a husband is naturally bent in that direction they will receive lots of support and encouragement. For every brute in the organization there are quite a few nice guys.

We just got started on Breaking Bad and are mid-way through Season 3. I'm also looking forward to Walking Dead, which starts up in October.

Love it! The show takes a while to take off because it is more character driven then plot driven. I would say that the time period is also an integral character. Building a time machine so I can live back then is still on my bucket list! Until then I'll settle for having a whiskey decanter in my office.

How Did You Get Rid of Your Bound Volumes?
by Eiben Scrood inmy town will no longer collect old books like that as trash and they're pretty hard to burn.
my solution has been to include one in every bag of used cat litter when i clean the cat boxes.
i've gotten rid of around 30 that way and i'm about halfway there.

I tried to my nice and offer my theocratic library on Facebook. A couple of people hit me up for them but later backpedaled -- maye they found out I was an "apostate" and backpedaled. Next stop is the dumpster.

Do you give to beggars?
by jean-luc picard ini have seldom given money to beggars.
i have often thought that many are people who just do not want to work.
however, i am starting to wonder if i ought to: and how much to give?.

I need to throw my hat in those that don't stop to judge if it is a con, someone who will use it for drugs/alcohol, or really someone in need.
God makes it rain on the wicked and the righteous. Jesus gave himself for millions who will never appreciate it or acknowledge it.
My obligation before Heaven is to give -- what a person does with that gift under Heaven is on them.

Does mankind need religon to have morality?
by highdose inan arguement i've encountered recently is: god tells us right from wrong.
if you don't have a reason to do right instead of wrong then no one will have any morals.. i disagree with this entirely of course.
what kind of morality is it when you are only doing what is right out of fear of being punished for doing what is wrong?.

I would answer the OP with a reluctant yes. I think for the majority mankind has shown that external controls of behavior are needed. Human governments establish laws which control actions in a similar manner to religion. They also have an enforcement mechanism, as do religions. Without either society falls apart. In early times the religious law and the secular law was the same. In modern times they don't always line up, but still many of the concepts carry over. For instance both a church and a government will mandate that it is wrong to murder or to steal.
I do believe that mankind has the capacity to have an inherent moral compass, a capacity for knowing good and bad, but that it is not developed by most to serve as a reliable guide for conduct. In its place a tutor can be a necessary evil, be it a government or religion.

The written information has also bounced back to bite the Watchtower in that it provides a paper trail linking the local elder's tribunals with the headquarters. In one case a court ruled that it invalidates the Watchtower's claim that judicial comittees are protected by clerical confidentiality privilege. The argument is, how can you say that a judicial comittee is a confidential, private matter between a churchmember and an elder, when the elder is required to document the meeting and report to a third -party.
