  when you were a jw, did you witness a rather large enthusiasm from your congregation for passing fads?

  what i mean is, one dub would start something and everyone would join in?

  this was especially prevelant with the women of the congregations.. for instance, for a while every female dub was undertaking this strange diet where they basically drink this really odd and particularly disturbing looking mushroom that they kept in their fridge.

  Oh my god, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, who could forget that? It seemed every woman in the cong was diagnosed with this.. I also noticed that alot of dubs refused to see doctors and saw natropaths who always seemed to diagnose bogus sicknesses - for instance one woman told me she had parasites in her skin and under the microscope, you can see them scurrying around

  There always was a huge amount of these siciknesses in the congregations, Ross River Fever was really popular for some time in Australia - I think alot of theorys here are right on. I think it just comes down to the dubs being completely overwhelmed by their theocratic duties. I think alot of dubs invented these sicknesses, but I also believe that the dubs made themselves actually think that they were sick - I think it was just a way out for alot of them.

  i was sucked in once, while i was working at my store that i managed years ago a middle aged man in a suit bought an outfit from me.

  What exactly happens with these personality tests? What is the process, how do they use these to draw you into their cult? I have had these offered to me a few times in the city.

I was sucked in once, while I was working at my store that I managed years ago a middle aged man in a suit bought an outfit from me. He complimented me on my good service and offered me an interview, for his "Retail company" , he totally made out like he was headhunting me for a legitimate job, he seemed very confident, trustworthy and proffessional - we arranged an interview, he offered to do it in me house, and thats where the alarm bells rang I suggested that I would prefer not to and we met in a shopping centre instead.

  The guy spent an hour enthusiasticly describing to me my job, which seemed very complicated, I asked him about 6 times what was it that I will actually be doing, he wouldnt give me a straight answer - in the end I worked out it was pyramid selling - I was so dissapointed, I actually thought I was going to be offered a cool job I said no, but this guy just would not literally let me go - in the end I agreed to take some tapes from him (brainwashing material) and agreed to call him back. This guy hounded me at least once a week at my shop, for months, calling all the time until I got my assistant manager to lie and tell him that I had quit.

  I was so angry and annoyed that this guy misrepresented himself so much! This scheme he was in was found in the papers to be highly illegal years later and was described a total destructive and mind controlling cult!

  Apart from dubs that was my one other cult experience. Has anyone had any similar?

  I think the fad that has popped up the most in this thread is health diets and vitamins, natural medication ect. This was always huge in dub land, no matter what congregation you went to. I wonder why this is?

  LOL that is just about THE geekiest thing I have ever heard.

  One of my mates decided to go in full Scottish gear, kilt, sporran the lot, even though he wasn't Scottish.

  Sounds like a cool guy, a bit like my freind (the mobster) He also once went to an assembelly in a sorong ( i hope I spelt that right )

  No different than society as a whole, but more compact and noticable.

  I agree, but it is quite amusing to reflect on these fads.

  What about some fads that didnt take off with dubs? Troll dolls, Harry Potter, and who can forget

  smurfs!!!!

  I remember way back in the eighties, all the kids were wearing little leather or colorful threaded wrist bands. An elder soon put a stop to that, with a severe talk about "Following worldly trends" . He didnt hold back in his opinions about how particularly wrong it was for boys to wear these as they "Look like some thing a homosexual would wear".

  Ha Ha - Loud ties! Im surprised the elders joined in, though! I had quite a liberal group of freinds when I was a dub, the guys I was freinds with were quite individual dressers, especially at the assembellys - One of my friends used to constantly wear inappropriate outfits e.g - once he dressed as a mafia gangster - black suit, shirt and tie - complete with a bowler hat. I thought he looked quite cool, but the dubs avoided him like the plague.

  Need Help and Advise

  i have an ex jw friend who has been out for about 3 years now, and has since been going to every memorial just to keep her family happy.

  she is baptised, and so far has sucessfully done the fade, though she has never actually told her parents that she wants no part of the org.

  now the memorial is coming up and her family expects her to go.

  Thanks so much everyone for your help on this. I delivered alot of your advice onto my freind ... It helped. She called her parents. She told them she was not going, neither was she ever going again. They were upset, but glad she was honest They are not shunning her. Thank you again.

  For instance, for a while every female dub was undertaking this strange diet where they basically drink this really odd and particularly disturbing looking mushroom that they kept in their fridge. Another one: Folk Art, natural remedies and beauty portraits.

  Another example is bible covers. In our congregation, this middle aged brother was designing this "Special" bible - it was bloody huge, with about 17 bookmarks and the "Reasoning form the Scriptures" was attached - all in one, with this fancy bible cover. He actually sold these things like hotcakes at $20 each, and the cong was loving them, until the CO chastised the guy about making his own publications - "New editions should only come from one place!" After that, the elders were too embarrased to use these bibles in their talks anymore and they dissapeared.

  The fads, though werent actually fashionable in "The world" - what I mean is, the dub fads werent necessarily consistant to what was the general fad at the time. It was just a fad within dubs. Did anyone see any of these?
