don Juan gave it to me. he came to me in a dream...the way I got to know him was a very fortuitous type of affair. i was not interested in finding out what he knew, because i didn't know what he knew. i was interested in collecting plants. and i met him in arizona. there was an old man who lived somewhere around the hills, that knew a great deal about plants. and that was my interest, to collect information on plants. and we went one day, this friend and myself, we went to look for him. and we were misguided by the yuma indians and went up in the hills and never found the old man. it was later on when i was at the end of this first trip that i made to arizona, at the end of the summer and i was ready to go back to los angeles, that i was waiting in the bus stop and the old man walked in. and that's how i met him...

The Meaning of Names....?
by SpiceItUp inthere are some that are obvious and then others that just baffle me to no end..... yes i am talking about your user names.... do any of you have stories behind them or are they significant for some reason or are they just a word you made up?.
mine...well its easy.... i got the nickname of spicy back in nov of last year when i dyed my hair this crazy red color and the name of the color was "spiced ginger".
the rest of it is because i love to make things more interesting---- sorta of like adding a bit of spice to the stew (hopefully i come across as that as well .

Your favourite cult books
by refiners fire indown the past 15 years i have read many many books about cults, religious movements, propaganda techniques, psychological manipulation and brainwashing .
for about 10 years i read nothing else, and obtained literally hundreds of books.
are there any books on my "favourites" list that you wanted to read but never did?

Am I the only nutty cult reseacher here?
i wouldn't say "nutty"...
helter-skelter was a good one. riveting! i haven't read any of those other books though... i prefer post-apocalyptic stories like "farnham's freehold" by robert heinlein, or "warday" by whitley streiber. or true stories about man conquering things, like "into thin air" (about everest) by jon krakauer.

So What Was A Cause For Stumbling For You, Then?
by Englishman ini recall vividly my teenage years when i was the eldest son of a colourful po.
until you have spent several days residing at the home of the po of a large congregation, you can have no idea what sagas and dramas are played out day after day by the publishers in many congregations.. publishers, ms's, elders, they all want the ear of the po.
in effect, many publishers become totally unable to make even the smallest decision without first of all contacting the po.

Remove the power of Brooklyn and it's elder system, and the cause for stumbling is removed with them too.
amen.
Flanders: Reverend, I'm, uh, I'm afraid something terrible has
happened.
Lovejoy: Well, sit down and rap with me brother, that's what I'm here
for.
Flanders: [sits] I was talked into doing a dance called "The Bump,"
but my hip slipped and my ... my buttocks came into contact
with the ... buttocks of another young man.
Lovejoy: [pause] I ... see.
[voice-over] Then the calls began.
[dissolve to shot of the Reverend at the dinner table, on
the phone with Flanders]
Flanders: Well, I, I think I may be coveting my own wife.
[cut to shot of Reverend playing with a small train set]
I'm meek but, I could probably stand to be meeker.
[cut to shot of the Lovejoys in Paris]
I, I ... I think I may have swallowed a toothpick.
Lovejoy: Finally, I just stopped caring. Luckily, by then it was the
Eighties, and no one noticed. -

Would/Do you wear a Cross around your neck ??
by Prisca inafter all that we had drummed into us about not the cross, and particularly about not venerating the symbol itself, i have been wondering about this issue.. so, what are your views about wearing a cross around your neck ?
is it just a fashion accessory, or does it mean something to you ?.
inquiring minds would like to know

crosses are very trendy right now. so i might get one and wear it, just for fun. maybe a little silver one. i don't have any now, though. i got one when i left the org, as an act of rebellion. but i only wore it a couple of times. i felt it clearly identified me as a religious freak, so i gave it to a friend.
i don't understand why the pope is all hot over hollywood stars wearing them. what's worse is child-molesting bishops and priests wearing them...

A Question to All Believers in God???
by JT inwe have a group of friends over right now, some are former jw and some have never been involved.
we are watching the news about the little girl death and the question has come up: .
why did god let this little child die like this?
-
Incense_and_Peppermints
To even make up a "What if" such as this is disgusting and demeaning to this innocent child, brutalized by a monster.
i agree, and i'll tell you why:
i understand about karma, but the statement: "What if that raped little girl, was a rapist in another life, and was just getting what she was giving before?" almost negates sympathy or outrage, because it's "oh, that's that child-raper/killer, in his new incarnation, here to be taught a lesson."
she was nothing but an innocent. period. we humans want, need to, explain everything we encounter, in order to rationalize it. sadly, too many things cannot be explained. they just are.

Share Your Books Everywhere!
by Valis ini saw this on the news and thought it was the coolest thing i'd seen in a long while.
you sign up your books, list where you are going to leave them and leave a prepared note for the person that finds and reads them...then they do the same thing over again...check it out...thought this might be a good way to have coc and other books read by interested people.. .
sincerely,.

what an awesome thing. this reminds me of book-sharing i do with friends and family. we lend each other books and then when the person goes on a trip, they take the book with them. inside the cover we write down where we went. i gave a book to a friend of mine who went to new york, then africa, then new zealand, then australia, then back to chicago, and eventually back to me in phoenix. it was called "time enough for love" by robert heinlein. the book was already a special book, but it was even more special because it had been to all these places and had become a "traveled" book.
i'm going to sign up.
thanks for the cl link!

i don't think god has anything to do with man's affairs. i think it's the equivalent of naturalists studying creatures in their native habitats - when the weak and the sick are preyed upon, they don't intervene because it's nature taking its course. i don't think god was "sitting back and watching" this little girl's kidnaping and death. i also don't think god watches over anyone. we are on our own. what annoys me is people who are, say, lost in the woods, and pray to find their way out, and then when they are rescued they say god saved them. or when teams pray before games, etc. for a big win, and then thank god afterwards. or when a celebrity accepts an oscar or grammy and says "i want to thank the man upstairs"... i knew a man whose religion was real big on "harnessing the power of god for financial gain". as if god sits around and gets you a new car because you say three hail mary's. ugh.
i don't know... sometimes i don't even think i believe in god anymore. it's funny, even when i was a witness, jehovah wasn't half as real to me as jesus was. not sure why... i mean, i really loved jesus. i was always petrified of jehovah.

sometimes i think that people who commit such atrocities, especailly against the most innocent and helpless, should die in the same way. he should be kidnapped from his loved ones by a very bad man and have the same hideous things done to him, in the exact same way that he did them to her, murdered in the same way, then tossed aside like a used tissue. he should feel every burst of terror that she felt, every ounce of pain, every glimmer of revulsion, and weep for his mommy the way she must have.
of course we are civilized and good and would not punish this way. but i think it nonetheless.
