FASCINATING debate: do we actually know what JESUS taught at all??
by Terry inthis debate is quite thrilling.. .
start at three minutes and forty two seconds where bart ehrman begins speaking.
then, if you find this compelling, go back and watch all the debate.. .

I've always thought it interesting, without making any judgment on it either way, that million worship and adore a man who apparently only a few hundred people might have seen, a few people wrote about, and only one or two actual historians hinted might exist.
I mean, either Christianity started out so small and localized that no one gave a damn about it enough to write it up, or Jesus was just pretty much made up out of folk stories containing a lot of speculation about the nature of the expected Messiah or a compilation of several individuals who were teaching a radical form of Judaism at the time.
I think if Jesus hadn't been written about then, we'd have invented him sooner or later. The Messiah is our ultimate hero myth, and god knows we need our heroes.
I can actually appreciate Christ and his teachings as present without really having to believe he existed as written, which is one of the nice things about being a universalist. I don't have to believe what is unproven to get benefit out of it. Believing in what Christ taught isn't that hard, living it is, but believing that peace is good, brotherhood is good, don't be a hypocrite, love one another...all good.

Well, since this thread has degenerated into playground name calling, I'll leave with, "You know you are, but what am I?" and go find something intelligent to discuss like why high heels make your butt look so good but hurt your feet so damn bad.

Getting into Arguments with JW's...
by ForbiddenFruit ini'm trying to fade away, but i sometimes find myself in discussions or arguments with jw family/friends/white haired virgin elders.
now, i usually have them beat on things but i'm not very experienced, so i was thinking if you guys could help me put together a list of completely unanswerable questions to pose to my jw friends/family/elders so they can stop bugging me.
if i keep asking them questions they simply cannot answer, then they might leave them alone.

I'm still puzzled as to why informing me that JWs don't try to convert parrots is meant to be a clever retort? I'll try not to lose any sleep over figuring that out.
Anyway, as soon as you demonstrate why you don't see how 1914 is derived by only using the Bible, they get annoyed and finally disgusted with you and I haven't been bothered by Witnesses in years about doctrinal matters.
Doctrinally, they're way out on some limb where believing that just because you're radically different in some ways from "Christendom" that God loves you best.
Simply because some Christians turned into a murdering bunch who decided that Christ put a sword in their hand to destroy anyone who didn't cough up their lands and riches to them doesnt mean you teaching ideas equally unprovable and illogical as 2+2 =6 makes you right.

*touches self* Well, I thought when I woke up this morning that I was real...but now I'm worried that I'm unreal.
"has someone else touch me* It's just been verified by another party...I'm a REAL Christian! I'm not made of wood brought to life by a magic fairy!
Oh, thank you, someone. I'm REAL! *cheers*
This article has all the logical merit of an 8 year old in the school playground yelling "I'm rubber and you're glue, what you say bounces off me and sticks to you...I know you are, but what am I?"

Gee, I understood that article about the banking industry hedge fund managers and others meeting with Republicans in their national financing committee. They're worried that they'll lose control of their minions now that they've armed them with torches and pitchforks. That has a nasty way of happening, so I can sympathize.
Most of the Republicans I know are nice reasonable people who roll their eyes at the tea baggers. They're tired of looking like moralistic morons and idiots who can't spell parroting the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, who are no doubt so concerned about their listeners taxes and finances that they are crying all the way to the bank about it. Don't be on our side...you're making us look stupid is their thinking on the matter.
Well, I can see why Glenn Beck would be protesting taxes...he made around 35 million bucks last year, and probably got the crap taxed out of it, as he's in that upper stratosphere tax bracket that had their taxes restored to Clinton era rates. Too bad he doesn't care enough to show up in his tricorn hat and breeches himself.
Several Republicans I'm friends or who are close family members with are atheists or agnostics who have no idea why Republicans have become the epitome of "vote your religion" because they despise that.
Some of them are seriously thinking about joining the Libertarian movement, one of my brother in laws, an accountant and business manager, investor already has.

You know, if Palin had actually paid attention in that Constitution class she went to instead of ratting her beehive up and winking at the professor, she might have gotten the point that the Constitution was written to allow for change by majority vote.
It's called "democracy"...look it up.

I saw a lot of signs that were anti-gay marriage. How exactly does that affect my taxes? I saw some others that were protesting illegal immigration, but I don't know from what country. Is "Maxico" a new country or a corporation that makes feminine hygiene products?
Okay, I admit I laughed when I saw a sign that said" "Teabaggers are against Sodomy!" I had no idea that these protesters were so gay and witty. And hey, whatever sexual acts you practice in private are your own business, you don't have to put it on a sign! I'm cool wiith it.
I saw signs warning me of "youth in Asia" and "socillism" and I have no idea why I should worry about Chinese teenagers killing my grandparents(who are all already dead, so whew!) and is "socillism" some new form of food poisoning?
But, isn't it kind of sadly ironic to take a Thursday off from work to protest your bosses 4% tax increase when you just got an $800 tax break?
I have to admit, did find a few people out there holding signs I could agree with, though...like this guy:

Gangs have always embraced Satanic symbols like tattoos of upside down crosses and such because it scares people who are scared of Satan and they want people to be afraid of them. Prison tattoo art is full of it too, which is were gang symbols come from.
Nothing new here, move along.

Jehovah's Witnesses---A Religion That Does Nothing For Anyone
by minimus inthe reality is: jehovah's witnesses benefit no one but themselves!.
they don't contribute to society.
they refuse to get involved in local interests because that would constitute violating their neutrality.. if sexual abuse allegations are made amongst their members, unless two witnesses can attest to the molestation, they refuse to get the "superior authorities" involved.. they claim to be doing their neighbors a "life saving" work but the reality is that they simply are pests to their "householders".. they are a tax free "religion" and they do not pay taxes.. they are judgmental people and regard the "world" as "worldly" and in the "power of the wicked one".. and if the individual members do not conform to the organization's dictates, they might very well be "shunned" and regarded as "dead".. why anyone would want to be a jehovah's witness is beyond me..

My twenty year old daughter, when she was much younger and I was still half heartedly attending meetings would say to me, "They have no right to bitch about all the problems in the world when they won't lift one finger to change or help, and they actually want it to get worse!"
That was one thing that I had no defense for, so I didn't even try. Wishing misery on others so they can have their precious paradise, it's disgusting.
My daughter is a smart girl...she saw some of this crap before I did. I quit making her go to meetings when she was about 10, she'd already had enough and I was about there myself.
