Finkelstein, it's irrelevent that he was unarmed. When an assailant refuses to stop what they're doing or flee, and instead charges a person with a drawn gun, that person must open fire. Otherwise they have no business owning a gun in the first place. They certainly have no business being a Police Officer.

by Simon inafter a thorough investigation and weighing of the evidence the grand jury has decided not to indict the officer.. the reaction so far seems as predicted - people refuse to accept that the result represents justice despite claims that is what they wanted.. there is now violence and vandalism, including gunshots.

They released Wilson's testimony and witness testimony and are reading some of it on air.
From Wilson's testimony, after being punched in the face, and struggling with Brown from inside his cruiser, he finally pulled his gun and said "Stop it or I'll shoot", to which Brown replied "You're too much of a f---ing p----y to shoot me."
Witness #10 saw what happened outside the cruiser and said after at first running away, Brown turned around and full out charged Wilson starting about 10 yards away. Wilson fired several shots and stopped. Brown stopped for a second, then full out charged again. Then Wilson fired the second volley of shots which put him down. The witness testified Brown never had his hands in the air.

I've seen a lot of posts in local media putting all the blame on the nurse for getting on the plane from Cleveland but then I read this tidbit:
CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. John LaPook reports that Vinson called the CDC several times before boarding the plane concerned about her fever.
“This nurse, Nurse Vinson, did in fact call the CDC several times before taking that flight and said she has a temperature, a fever of 99.5, and the person at the CDC looked at a chart and because her temperature wasn’t 100.4 or higher she didn’t officially fall into the category of high risk.”

Behavior: I detest and condemn people who are sexually aroused by children.
Dissonance reduction:
Change my cognition to "Society should not discriminate or condemn someone based on the attributes a person was born with so long as they do not hurt other people".
Justify my congition by adding a new one that "Society should offer support and remedial therapy for those born with certain attributes that society deems unacceptable".
Change my behavior to "I detest and condemn people who act on their sexual arousal by children."

I meant that mostly tongue in cheek.
But I think we need to delineate the use of force as a form of punishment and as a method to get physical compliance. If the police decide to arrest you, however minor the offense, their non-use of force is dependent on you complying with their instructions. If you resist, even with a non-violent refusal to get in the squad car; they can and will physically compel you to obey. This is not punishment and that comes later.
Similarly, there is spanking as a form of punishment, and there is spanking to get immediate physical compliance. I'm not a big fan of spanking as punishment. Yes, the first few times the anticipation of the spanking is scary, but after awhile it wears off. I know with me personally, the lesson didn't last very long, and many boys really don't blink an eye at getting spanked.
But I do think with some children spanking is the only way to get immediate compliance. Then the punishment comes later as a denial of privileges, etc.

Including spanking in certain situations is a good way of teaching your children how the law enforcement and criminal justice system works. I say that with only partial sarcasm.
Your boss doesn't spank you when you don't do what he says, but the cops sure will.

EBOLA -why should America take the lead in handling it?
by hamsterbait inmillions have died in africa from civil wars where the governments have squandered money on bombs guns and tanks, whilst allowing millions more to die of malaria, diarrhoea and other treatable diseases.
thousands more have died in nigeria from religious killing than ebola.. and now big bad america is the one they all turn to (in mainly muslim countries) to save them, just like kuwait did in 1991.
