Paul's writings are generally considered first. I agree with the fact that it doesn't matter at all which came first. The real question is why do we take a collection of books and call it the BIBLE? There are 66 books that should all stand on there own merit. To pretend there is "A" Bible that you either accept or reject is a recent idea of Christianity. Most early Christians did not accept Revelation, James, Hebrews, 2&3 John as "acceptable" And you won't find any early christian writings that refer to any Greek - NT book as "Scripture". Even if they quote from them it is like a JW quoting from the WT - it has authority but NEVER is inspriration applied to early Christian writings. I've studied this for a while, but if you find something different please let me know. .. .. . .. . Allelsefails

70 years = 607?
by allelsefails in70 years of captivity?.
i myself have always believed that when archaeology disagreed with the bible the bible must be right.
that is how i dismissed the idea that jerusalem was destroyed in 586/587 bce.

Awesome thoughts. JWs are so unique ..... except when there beliefs are shown to be borrowed from spiritists. Pyramidology = Demonism according to Jws today. It is just silly to think about the infallibility of the "Pope" or the "governing body" it is all the same. Allelsefails

This is one of the most frustrating arguements I've had with Witnesses. You can say "read what it says" Why would one part be literal and the other symbolic? What scriptural basis is there for this belief? People who otherwise are intelligent thinking people with good jobs and even (a few) with college educations can't see the idiocy of such a stance. ........... My dog can see why that doesn't make sense!

Please nominate your favourite film and say why you rate it so highly.
by lifelong humanist ini've just watched all 3 parts of francis ford coppola's epic godfather once again.
it is a superb achievement on many levels.
each viewing reveals something new and fresh.. i recall, as a good jw at the time, not seeing it when released as it was not certified as 'suitable' given the content for jws.

Cool Hand Luke - nothing better - Great Escape, Bridge Over the River Kwai - unreal level of acting and story telling. BTW - Tombstone was OK but not 1/2 as good as Unforgiven in the western category. IMHO.

New here
by Heartbreaker ini have no idea what i want to convey in words here on this site, and have surprised myself by even joining at all.
i intended just to read, and get a few pieces of information, and now am a member, and spend many hours looking through posts old and new alike.
i am a current jw, born into it, and lets just say i'm in my thirties, female, and a mom of more than your average kids.

Welcome Heartbreaker. This is definitely a place where you can be yourself. I think with your questions you have started on the path to Christian Freedom. If you feel Birthdas are wrong - you shouldn't celebrate them. If you feel Easter is wrong - ditto. Christams, Independance day, thanksgiving, etc..... It should have always been your decision. (Rom 14) NO Man or group of men should ever influence these decisions. It is like the Governing Body has never read the scriptures sometimes. How is smoking (even tobacco :) a disfellowshipping offense but eating McDonald's NOT. I guarantee the same Bible principles apply to both. These Men have made themselves "Masters of our faith" which Jesus specifically condemned. Welcome to freedom! Allelsefails (if all elsefails try something that makes sense.)

Congrats on the Baby. I was raised as a JW in a divided household and have a little insight to share here. You've noticed people talking about Guilt being the driving force behind much of what JWs do to ensure people stay inline. As a child if I chose to go fishing with my dad instead of a JW meeting I was made to feel (by mom) that Jehovah God was really disappointed in me and I hurt my mom's feelings. How's that for a 4 year old who has to choose? The problem with your mate agreeing to be lenient in the household is that every meeting he goes to. Every time they have a Watchtower article or Sermon about marriage or family He is going to hear that it is his job to make sure his children are raised as JWs and to teach you. If he doesn't he is worse than someone who has no faith. He's going to feel horribly guilty anytime he hears these things and knows he is not doing what he is supposed to do. He WILL be able to convince your children that Jehovah God expects them to want to be JWs. The JWs have decades of experience and numerous publications designed exactly for that purpose. You might want to reasonable and let your children grow and chose for themselves, but he will take every opportunity to manipulate them with guilt to choose his way. He might be a great guy (my mom is awesome I love her to death), but he won't even see that applying the Watchtower's methods as manipulation (you'll see it right away). Good luck with whatever you choose. I hope he can be truly reasonable, but its hard to think he will be if he wouldn't look at things contrary to his beliefs (like this thread). Allelsefails

Reniaa - research before you post please. These meetings are not necessary they are - like the NGO staus of WTS with UN - a voluntary association with the "wild beast" that your own literature condemns. Taking advantage of rights (like Paul in Acts 25:25) is a completly different issue. Why do they deceive us about it?

I like the way it downplays our responsibility to the anointed ones. It says individuals should not be "elevated", but in the illustration of the sheep and the goats Jesus says that we are judged on how we treat his Brothers (anointed). Shouldn't we be clothing them and feeding them? What about the thousands who have started to "partake" this year? I believe this is the article seperating the GB from the "anointed" 10,000 or so now (no doubt will increase). We should only support them as a group not as individuals Right? Again the scriptures say whatever they want them to say. Sad.
