Wow, This sounds similar to where I was 5 years ago. I was actually privately reproved by a judicial committee for apostasy (ie - asking questions they can't answer) ... I never knew such a thing was possible .. but that is how it goes (my wife asked me not to get DFd so I ran circles around my answers until they just went with reproof). It does get easier over time and a place like this is a great way to let out the steam you can't around the JW's in your life.

What about Dictionaries and Encyclopedias? If you can I recommend rolling out 607/587 first. No = 607 = No 1914 and that changes everything.
I agree with JWfacts as a great resource and then you can print the references from the source material so there is no JWFacts on anything you print. Don't be surprised if she talks to her husband about hte visit he might insist he come along or not let her come at all. I know how elders are....

Interesting Old WT & Awake Articles Regarding Acts 17:11 "Beroeans" & "Keep Testing"
by lambsbottom inthe beroeans first received the word with the greatest readiness of mind, and then they went to carefully examining the scriptures daily as to whether these things were so.
the beroeans made sure of all things.
the bible tells us that these people were more noble-minded than those in thessalonica, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the scriptures daily as to whether these things were so.

AGM - did anyone miss this?
by Anony Mous inaccording to the live blog: god's will to be completed by the end of the millennium.
very casually said by louche (;-)).
i think this is one of those things that is supposed to rile up the r&f.

He was talking about the Millenial reign of Christ. Right? By the end of that - all god's purposes will be fulfilled.
There's enough stupid in this to see without the minutia. (is that how you spell minutia?)

The new translation of John 17:3 seems like a major shift.
by paul from cleveland inup until now, everlasting life was dependent on "taking in knowledge".
it was a perfect fit for a publishing house to interpret that scripture that way.
if we didn't keep up with the endless stream of publications from the watchtower our salvation would be in jeopardy.

I had this talk with my wife the other day. I was frustrated that "gnosis" is translated "taking in knowledge" which sounds like an intellectual procedure. (Exactly what JWs want it to be.) But gnosis means getting to know someone in a personal way. Like I "know" my wife but I can never "know" George Washington. I can "take in knowledge" about good old George, but I can never Know him.
At least it is one thing they got right in the change.

BUM WITNESSES
by The Searcher incan anyone save me the stress of listening to the self-appointed faithful & discreet slave for 3 hours, and give a clue as to roughly at what point in the proceedings was the derogatory term 'bum witnesses used, and by whom?
i'd really love to extract that comment and send it to a weakening witness, to highlight the judgmental arrogance and name-calling being displayed.. many thanks in advance folks!.

This guy did us a service with this blog. He didn't say it was a word for word translation. The watchtower article is damning enough about how we should judge even our brothers as to whether they are good enough to asssociate with. I thought Jehovah already made that call when he drew them to his one and only spirit directed organization? Aparently that is not good enough I now have to judge my brothers. Maybe I can have my friends fill out a form that lets me know how many hours they get a month and how much they put in the box? Maybe we should keep a public attendance roll on meetings so that I know who is a loser or not?
Stupid crap.

How to break up a "friendship" with a JW who is (still!) trying to convert me
by Sofi inok, so i never had the courage to tell this people i was df'd a long time ago... just kept "studying" here and there because i felt lonely and they were so persistent.
last time i saw this woman, we had a heated argument (was more like a monologue) where i told them why i think the wts is wrong on the blood subject.
she is still sending me texts about when is she going to see me again to "study" (bringing in the "closer": a regular pioneer we both know).

I would tell her that someone you know found out you were studying with witnesses and told you they were a false prophet. They said that Jerusalem was destroyed in 587 BC not 607. When you looked it up in the encyclopedia you found out they were right! You were shocked. Ask your friend to prove to you the 607 date for Jerusalem's destruction. This is key. No 607 = no 1914 = no "last days" = no 1919 = no appointment by Jesus of their Governing Body. It is a house of cards and this is the card on the bottom of the stack.
When "allelsefails" try common sense.

New Flock Book - Child Abusers NOT excluded from serving again
by allelsefails in"shepherd the flock" book - page 38 - chapter 3 par.20 ........ (talking about disqualifying servants and elders) 20. if the sin occurred before he was appointed as an elder or a ministerial servant, the elders will need to take into consideration the fact that he should have mentioned this possible impediment to his being qualified when elders interviewed him just prior to announcing his appointment.
moreover, the nature of the sin may reflect greatly on his qualifications to serve.
for example, the sin may involve past child abuse, and this would likely disqualify him for many years.-w97 1/1 pp.

Tery Oberon - Notice the WT article refered is specifically talking about Child Molesters. Not "abusers". What I didn't know at the time is that a "known" child molester is not just a guilty one. It is one certified "known" by the branch. Aparently anyone that keeps their sin secret long enough can qualify to be a servant or elder again.
Straightshooter - a 16 year old that messes around with a 15 year old is not a child molester under any definition. Otherwise I would be one because my girlfriend at the time was 5 months younger than me. That's just stupid of those elders.
There is a huge difference between pedophiles - people attracted to pre-pubescent children and ephebophiles - people attracted to teenagers. In times past it was common to marry 13-15 year children to older people and think nothing of it. I don't think this is ok and certainly not in the case of forced or arranged marriages. Pedophilia is a DISEASE however and no one that has ever molested a pre-pubescent child should ever be trusted around children again. There is no known cure. I believe repentant pedophiles can have God's forgiveness, but never our trust.
If "all else fails" - try common sense.

A good question to ask about that article is "where am I in the illustration about the wheat and the weeds?" Bad people = Weeds, Anointed people = Wheat, Great Crowd = ....missing... Really? The illustration covers the few thousand anointed remnant gathered into congregations but does not mention 7 million people supposedly serving Christ? idiocy.
If you get roped into something beyond a "shepherding call" in the future PM me. I went through a JC for apostasy and did not get disfellowshipped. Got a 5 year fade going now and lots of experience. (I was also an elder for 6 years.)
Here for you if you need.
