I have to just point this out too for people who are into things like this.. If you have psychological problems, and I don't mean clinical or anything necessarily extreme, but basic everyday stuff - what do you think that says about special abilities which you might categorize as psychic healing? We say it's all mind, but then wouldn't gross level psychological issues be a part of this? In other words it's sort of a matter of walk before you can run.

Can psychic energy heal?
by kenpodragon inrecently i was watching a documentary on this woman who claimed that she could heal people with the power of her mind.
the documentary went into interviewing people about their experiences, and many of them actually had medical signs of improvement that could be documented and shown.
while watching this, i was seeing it as a example of psychic energy healing someone?

Just an interesting point on this particular comment, which is probably off topic. It has been found that conceptual thought can enhance actual physical performance. If a person mentally practices a certain physical action, their performance is improved when they carry out the physical motion.
For instance, I've had difficulty in relaxing and properly riding my horse when he canters. When I'm physically in the saddle, I tense up and simply can't relax sufficiently to ride properly. However, if I "practice" the proper riding technique in my mind beforehand, I find that I can easily transfer my mental image and practice over to the physical occurrence of the event.
Red, of course this is not what I meant, nor is this what I consider conceptual thought. I tried to qualify it to distinguish abstract symbolic ideas like the example I used of mathematics as opposed to other mental activity that involves imagery, feeling tone and imagining sensory and kinesthetic experiences, which they use in a cognitive enhancement technique called image streaming by the way. Us talking about it now is what I mean by conceptual thought, we're not engaging those sensory impressions, we're only reading and writing words.
Of course, involving the sensory experience in this way really begins to integrate the mind and body doesn't it? Focusing on the mind or the body exclusively is both limited. It's one thing to do that out of practicality when you can't engage in the physical activity such as riding a horse, but if you favor one over the other you're likely to be missing something. I'm sure you are very aware that imagining riding is nothing compared to the real experience. I guess you could say what I'm getting at is like a guy who watches extreme sports on TV going out of his way to design a robot to get beer from the fridge and make a pizza so he doesn't have to get up and go to the kitchen himself. Lots of mind power in engineering a robot, but something's a little off there. But other than that, the fact is if this guy watches a lot of sports, he probably has some insightful commentaries. Conceptually he probably knows a lot about the games he watches, but it's unlikely that he can perform 1% of the things he watches for entertainment. I say forget about watching all that for a while, if anything the guy needs to watch a light aerobics workout and just get his ass off the couch and start moving.

Should We Be Imitators
by Satanus inwt always claimed that everyone imitates somebody.
they said that they were imitating jehovah, jesus, isaiah, or some other bible character in some ways or another.
they claimed the rest of mankind were imitating their own idols, heros, and ultimately, the devil.

Would you say that all acts of imitation by adults are fakenesses, and so, in the ideal state, there should be no imitation, unless it was play or performance for entertanment sake? Then again, if someone was doing an imitation of someone for the purpose of entertaning, would that not be a put down of the person being imitated?
Actually, what I had in mind is that sense of curiosity or learning that kids have when they imitate something, it seems to me it's basically an experiment to them. To put it another way, it's exploration or discovery. It's not a matter of how old you are of course, it's whether you are approaching it with that mind set. I guess it would go back to how Jesus said you have to be like young children. There is this open attitude of seeing just what it's about, rather than having made the decision that this is the way to go and then going through the motions that's supposed to support a belief/judgement you made at a previous point in time. The child like attitude is one of "ok this is being done, so what does it do and what is it about?" The "adult" attitude is "I know what this is about, I just have to do this that and the other thing to get there" - the former is imitating a behavior in an effort to discover what function it serves, the latter assumes that they know already and goes ahead with the action thinking it will get them somewhere. The child like attitude is of course a humble one coupled with curiosity, the latter is actually a rather arrogant attitude as a certain judgement has been made already.

Imitation = idolatry, hmmm, that could be. But since i'm non religious, i wouldn't nesesarily say that it is always wrong to do that. After all, in children it is natural
Not at all, and of course children don't take it religiously. The problem comes in when people take some 'thing' as sacred or a substitute for life, whether it's a thought/belief, behavior or whatever. As far as kids are concerned, I'd think they're just playing. But adults seems to take it very seriously, although it's kind of ironic that they seem to miss this aspect of the word "imitate" that points to that which is fake! To play pretend is one thing, to really take that seriously is a sign of mental illness.

Hi Kenpo, that's basically what I was getting at, although I wouldn't use the word belief. By the way, just as some background I've been studying Tai Chi for a few years. One might think someone who's into all that would promote it, but in fact in my experience the approach to the subtle stuff was to tell the student very little so as not to fill their heads with useless concepts, the 'discipline' is natural so that things can simply be discovered if one simply paid attention and relax. It's not a religion after all, people learn martial arts for the very concrete, tangible aspect of it. (I might also note that in the martial aspect there's no sense of desperation for anything as there is in life threatening illnesses in the realm of healing) It's the same with this stuff and spirituality. These things happen in spite of belief, because reality doesn't have much to do with belief, other than the fact that we really have these thoughts in our heads. With just about anything, though, there could be a distorted perception due to ego. Now I don't mean that in the sense of egomania, but as far as perception goes - I guess it's like that saying "I see, said the blind man looking through the knot hole peering over the barbed wire fence" - too many filters. I say see clearly first, then worry about a conceptual framework - and recognize that that's all that is, and not the real thing. This applies to chi as well as anything that might be subtle, after all if everything is one then it's not all that meaningful to make these distinctions is it?

Well, from what I've observed there's a lot of misunderstanding on this whole business even from the proponents side. It's like meditation, people think it's about a concentration practice when the more important aspect is relaxation, or accepting whatever is going on rather than going to a thought, any thought because thoughts are by their very nature created by the mind and not what is actually physically happening. What I mean is conceptual thoughts are not necessarily connected to physical ability, for example you may be able to calculate the necessary trajectory of a ball for example, but actually making such a pitch or hitting it or something is another story. You may know the math very well but simply suck at playing ball, and what we're talking about is how to play ball.
To me this question isn't actually that important because although there are times when some kind of intervention is called for, a lot of the times the person with the illness needs to change something or do their homework so to speak in order to get better. The one shot deal, regardless of what the treatment modality is and how effective it is, will only last so long when it's some outside influence done "to" you. Discussing this could in fact take you further away from that, because instead of engaging in the practical day to day activity of how one might heal or be healthy it's just a fascination with another conceptual thought, and anyone who really gets the principles on which these things are based, whether you believe it or not, wouldn't bother wasting their time. Incidentally, there appears to be a pattern where those who consider themselves "healers" might think of themselves as spiritual, whereas what I've found is that those who've really got a clue about the spirituality business tends to be healing in different ways, and anything particularly fancy along those lines is seen as a by product, because that's exactly what they are. It goes back to standing on your own two feet, someone who cares about you will not want you to be dependent on them. Whether it's physical, psychological, spiritual or whatever kind of work, ultimately you have to participate in the work yourself. Even if the doctor is entertaining there's no point in return visits if you can stay healthy. Go buy a copy of Patch Adams or something.
Those who've looked into these things know that the basic idea is that it's good to have no stuck energy, that it should flow freely just as blood circulates throughout your body. What do you suppose is happening if someone is caught up in a debate or a particular viewpoint, though, even (and especially) if it's about this very subject? In other words, being too excited about this one way or the other may prove to be the cause of "energetic blocks" - or you might call it running around in circles, intellectually, emotionally or whatever. It's like if you're getting worked up debating about what peace means or something, how silly is that? Even if your intention is that the truth should be known, who says that any given person or group of people needs to, at any given time - or that you're the messenger for them? If someone really wants to know about this stuff, the information is out there. Even though I have a rather limited social life, I do have one - and I sure ain't going to spend my time following something like this identifying my self concept with some other concept so I can feel like I'm somebody, I stand for something - all the usual crap. I'm a scientist! I'm a mystic! Yada yada yada... But I digress. It's much more useful just to know how to relax, and to monitor your own health through time - rather than resorting to a fancy 'high level' type of healing, (you can replace healing with any number of other functions/activitys, actually) whether it's mystical or technological. As I've already stated, thoughts, especially thoughts along these lines, is not the thing that helps you in your health and well being - if anything they're a waste of your psychic energy.

As my zen teacher would say, there is no such thing as "fake it till you make it" in spirituality. Of course, he's not exactly a teacher, and in this he would agree with me. I've come to see spiritual teacher almost as a contradiction in terms, in fact it is in the absolute sense. One idea that is revolutionary in the sense of being very different even among the eastern camp is that enlightenment can co-exist with conditioning, in fact if you're still a human it has to. The thing is though, you no longer take it seriously.
But as far as imitation goes, it can be behavior which you see in yourself which would then come naturally, that is to say someone else is displaying or expressing something which you weren't able to express before, and on the other hand one can try to imitate something that is against their own nature because it's a good idea. I think this is where ideas become dangerous. It is possible for one's own nature to be expressed in a good way, which can manifest in very different ways - it makes no sense to stifle that just because you only know it to look a certain way, which is really missing the point. Smells like the whole idolatry business if you ask me.

Focusing on agreeable points that relieves sufferi
by Introspection init occurred to me this evening that it would be more helpful for us to be able to stick to what is relevant to helping others cope and things we can all agree on at that, rather than thrusting a new world view on the confused person.
i'll be the first to admit that i've gotten too excited about my own perspective on this board at times, and although it might make for an interesting read to some people those extra things just doesn't help, atleast not necessarily.. in any case, it seems to me we can all agree that there are some basic "first things first" kind of things that are more important to address rather than even going into minute details.
now i don't know about everyone, but my guess is i'm not alone in that i'm not all that clear on what those might be because i am coming very much from my own perspective rather than one of helping others in the predicament of struggling with being a witness and such, as i am not focused on this anymore.

That's good to hear Larc, I think being able to relate personally makes a big difference. Although topical threads can be informative, people do feel the need to be heard and want others to know where they're coming from. The combination of posters with that personal touch, which of course all depends on the person they are relating to, and the more informative posts should be very helpful.
