How much do all the books, etc. costs?

Hi Ray, as TR mentioned the average cost of books based on when they used to charge for them is not very high, and though they don't take up a collection they will give talks on how God loves a cheerful giver.. It's really up to the individual how much they want to contribute, as I recall there are basically two funds: Contribution to the world wide work, and there's a revolving Kingdom Hall building fund. But frankly, if I were you I'd be more concerned about what she's learning than the money she's donating.

Do you want the real truth or not?

on this website there seems to be so many lies and so little actual truth.

is this supposed to be a place to get answers or confuse the hell out of truth seekers?

well, for you seekers out there, if you find the truth on this site it'll be a major fluke.

Jason, why don't you address some specific issues if you think people on the board are wrong in their view? If you only do it by email you can only answer one person at a time, if you post here everyone can read it. Frankly, as others have pointed out since you are the one claiming the board is filled with lies, the burden of proof does fall upon you. Just start with one topic, any topic.

Freedom of Thought and JW Opposers

does freedom of thought really obtain in this forum?

are those who have left god's organization and jehovah god himself actually now more open-minded and unbiased?

if those who espouse atheistic thoughts or those who believe every vile utterance spoken against jehovah's people think they are now speaking from some olympian perspective, i beg to differ.

I have to admit you do know your philosophy. However, scripturally my simplistic mind goes back to one thing: Love is the identifying mark of true Christians correct? And before Paul made the point about when someone thinks he knows something he does not yet know it as he ought to know it, in verse 1 of 1 Cor. 8 he said 'knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. So it seems the real question is, do you see true Christian love in the congregation? I'm not talking about social pleasantries which can exist in other contexts, but is that agape' really there?

i just saw this show on the scifi channel for the first time on monday night.

how entertaining!

if this guy is for real, i'm amazed.

A few things.. First of all, remember it is the sci-FI channel, science *fiction*, though I don't think even John Edwards claim his stuff is science.. In any case, the questions he ask are so vague that it's meaningless. "I see a vowel in his name, either A, E, I, O, U, and possibly Y..." I'm exaggerating, but not by much. Although I don't know the details of scams that professed psychics pull, it seems clear that he is trying to get people to reveal information about themselves or their family, etc.

This does bring up a question for me though, I'm curious how exactly you guys understand the scripture that says the dead are conscious of nothing at all. It occurs to me that this does not necessarily (though very likely) imply the soul does not survive after death, specifically if you believe in reincarnation, which I guess is probably a rare combination here but not impossible. Personally, I think after stating that the dead are conscious of nothing at all, it could be added that the living is conscious of very little generally speaking..

Getting to Know You

this is a continuation of the "singles" thread i started.

i may have been a bit vague about how to describe ourselves, and introspection suggested a questionaire-type thing, so below are some questions to get us started.

freel free to say how much or how little you want.

Introspection

* How old are you and where do you live?

29, life in the San Francisco Bay Area of sunny California

* Have you ever been married and do you have any children?

Nope and nope

* What do you like best about being single?

I guess it's the freedom, though I don't really know what to compare it with having been single all my life!

* What do you dislike the most about being single?

Being alone, not having an emotionally intimate relationship

* Do you like dating or would you rather have a root canal?

Dating I guess, but don't get me started on the whole dating institution.. There's just something a little unnatural about it, then again so is root canal I suppose.. I'm of the "friends first" school of thought.

* Do you like to read? Watch movies? Participate in any sports?

Yes, I'm reading more non-fiction these days (transpersonal psych and spirituality type stuff) though I've been know to read some fiction. I do like movies but I find I'm pickier now than when I was younger. I've never been real big on sports, I guess the closest thing is Tai Chi.. (hey, it's not all old guys in the park moving slowly) I do enjoy being outdoors tho.

* What is your favorite book, movie, song?

I think it really depends on the subject/genre.. But one interesting book I read recently is Integral Psychology by Ken Wilber, I expect Transformations of Consciousness to be as if not more interesting though.. As far as movies go one that comes to mind is Contact, though I also like dramas too - thought Awakenings was good. Picking a favorite song is probably the hardest, but I've been enjoying Michael Hedges' music for a while now..

Honor among exJws

hello all......some things that have happened during the past week have made me think about exjws and honor.

we all remember 'theocratic warfare' and how it is ok to lie to those who don't deserve the truth.

so, my question is.....are exjws as a group more dishonest than people from other religious groups?

petaQ ! What do you know about honor human? No seriously, I don't know that ex-JWs can be compared to other religious groups though, as we are talking about EX-JWs, and they are not necessarily religious. I don't even know that we're a group really..

Deep Impact

has anybody seen the film deep impact?

it was about the possible destruction of the world by an asteroid and it came out at about the same time as the film armageddon.

the reason i ask is because this film had a very profound effect on me whilst i was still associating with the congregation.

Good point Individual. All I can say is, it would be a miracle greater than any mentioned in the bible and probably anywhere else if all the truly self-sacrificing people in the world were separated into an organization which uses fear as the primary motivation.

some of us are single, and might even be looking, and with the large number of great people on this board, there may be a chance where a couple or two might meet up!.

so if you are single, don't mind sharing a little about yourself here, and perhaps curious as to who else is single, then reply here!.

Okay I guess I'll go. My real name is Mark, I'm 29 and I live in Marin county, California just north of San Francisco. I've been out since about '98 or so and I think as a result I'm really able to begin to understand what spirituality is. I suppose most of my interests are normal enough to be shared by others, but one noteworthy subject is transpersonal psychology. I'm also interested in health, particularly nutrition (unfortunately more of a supplement junkie than a good eater ) and I'm working on integrating these two areas as a type of mind-body health/fitness/development.
