Why is a mass shooting in a church worse than other mass shootings?
by undercover ini'll preface this by saying that i was horrified by the news of the shooting in charleston, a town that i visit quite frequently, and i know where the church is.
i don't mean to make light of the situation, but my question is serious, after having watched news pundits, politicians, neighbors, friends, express shock, horror and outrage over the events.. they, like me, were shocked by the school shootings, and the theater shootings, and other mass shootings.
but i sense a different shock, a different reaction, to this event.

I think the media has a lot to do with these killings with all the coverage of police brutality against minorities. You add the coverage on the mass shootings over the past few years and it creates a cocktail for the crazies to be drunk with mentally. Shootings in churches and "religious" places aren't new. There are terrorist acts done quite frequently in Mosques in other countries. Just like others stated, What gets me is the reaction that these places are "safe" from terror. There are tons of movies that place violence in churches. One of which recently, Kingsman: the secret service. The movie had one of the MOST violent scenes in a racist church which features a British hero.

Who Is Your Favorite Late Show Talk Host Of All Time?
by minimus injohnny carson is still the king.
i thought jay leno was very funny.
letterman did nothing for me.

I don't have a favorite. They were all funny in their own way. Carson was before my time. Letterman seemed grumpy but the top 10 always gave me a few laughs. Leno was cheesy funny. Conan was corny. Kimmel and Fallon are both funny and smart. Arsenio was a good interviewer and had guest who wouldn't have got a shot before pop culture evolved -

Our hall is asking for money...
by thedepressedsoul ini guess the branch isn't happy with the amount being sent each month since we are way lower than our loan amount.
we now have to another financial survey to see the max amount that can be given.
it is "encouraged" for all to be in attendance and give much forethought and consideration to the amount you can donate each month.

Yes, pledge a HIGH number and when it's time to donate.......go grab a stack of your Monopoly money and put that in the box. Hey even throw in a few houses for equity!

having a dark night of the soul
by Miss Behaving ini'm writing this here because i need someone to talk to, and you're the only folks i know who will understand.
most of the time i think i'm a pretty happy and together person, but lately, i'll see something that reminds me of my family and i'll spontaneously start crying.
i miss them so much and my heart keeps breaking, and even though i have kind people i work and volunteer with, i feel so incredibly lonely sometimes.

I can't un-know what I know, I can't lie to myself or to them. But sometimes it's so tempting to. I long to call them just to hear their voices again, even if it's them being angry or guilt-inducing with me.
I can relate and so can others on here. Just try to stay positive and work on building a future and new life for yourself. You're FREE now to make new friends that don't have to agree with certain beliefs or lifestyles

What did you think of the ones that married, “Out of the Truth” but would still defend the WT Teaching?
by John Aquila inwhen i conducted the wt study and the article was on marrying only in the lord, it seemed that the ones who commented the most were persons who married a non-jw.
in fact, they were the ones that always told the young single jw girls to pioneer and never marry a worldly person.
"because i know what its like and believe me it's no fun" .

I always looked at them as struggling JW. They had a house that was figuratively torn in two. The women who married a unbeliever always seem like they were climbing a hill to build their reputation back up. It was even harder for them with kids. It must have been ackward for them to go to gatherings without their husband. I don't remember any being super dubs but definitely, the guilt was all over them for making that decision. If they did know the TTAT though, it would have been easy to leave -

Street Witnessing - did you ever do it?
by Muddy Waters ini remember in our congregation, there were a few older pioneer sisters who would start counting their time early - even before the service arrangement - by standing at a street corner and holding the magazines up in front of them and hoping that any passersby might stop to take one on their way to work or whatever.
as a fresh, new dub, i had heard about this "street-witnessing" work, but there was only one time i ever actually saw one of these older sisters doing this.
and even then i was shocked and embarrassed for her.... because this poor old sister was standing there, all by herself, holding up the watchtower & awake magazines, yet looking as sad and depressed as she could possibly ever look, her whole mouth was turned down just totally sad as she stood there, observing all the "dead" people walking around, hurrying to catch buses, get kids to school, get to work, etc.

Yes, I did street witnessing quite frequently. Like others said, it was a easy way to count time LOL. I found out another "form" of street witnessing from a brother I worked for. He invited me to work with him and his wife one morning. I got in their car and he proceeded to drive down one of the boulevards. As soon as he saw a man walking down the street. ....he pulled over and his wife (in the passenger seat) took out some mags gave a quick greeting, and handed them to the guy. I was so shocked by this...I didn't know what to say but shrugged it off. They convinced me that day, that this "drive by witnessing" was a easy way to dump those mags in people's hands. Needless to say, the area wasn't a nice one and this DEFINITELY wasn't what the WT would suggest. Looking back...I'm happy that we didn't get shot at!
