Well, to me, the "leaders" of the Jehovah's Witnesses seem very negative, pessimistic, and distrustful of the "rank and file". They are like very overly strict parents. The slide show is beautiful and shows young people having clean, wholesome enjoyment! The WTBTS needs to loosen up and let young people be young people - - needs to let people be people, period. They are being silly about social gatherings! They are repressing the congregations with far fetched restrictions and rules. Yes, they need to lighten up!

Elder uses Congregation Bible Study as an opportunity to ban the movie Avatar
by easyreader1970 inlast night, during the congregation bible study, the conductor (overseer?
) used this as a platform to say that the movie avatar is of satan and no christians should see it.. .
he said that he googled the (original) meaning of the word avatar and it was of hindu religious origin.

Bugs Bunny???!!! Oh, for Pete's sake!! I haven't seen Avatar, but from what I gather with the previews, it is just a fun fantasy that has nothing to do with Satan. That thinking is bizarre! I remember when 'The Exorcist' was out in the seventies, I think, JWs were warned against seeing it. Well, it's not a movie I'd want to see, anyway - - too creepy. However, I think people should be able to make mature decisions about things like this on their own, based on their personal consciences. People can think for themselves! They shouldn't be dictated to by the WTBTS. JWs need more leeway to think for themselves and make their own choices based on their own consciences.

I haven't been to a Memorial in over twenty years and will never go to one again. Anyway, I believe Jesus died for all humankind and therefore everyone should be able to partake in the emblems. Everyone.

Jevovah's Witnesses and mental health
by bubba flavel indoes anyone know if the society has specific policies on the handling of members with mental health problems?.
my grandfather, a brother in good standing since moses developed paranoid schizophrenia in his later years.
he got to the stage where he would knock people over in the street, place his hand on thier head and cast out evil spirits in the name of jehovah.. he was disfellowshiped and not long after he passed away.. this was related to me by a friend years later as i was unaware due to the shunning, i didn't even know he died.

As someone with a chemical brain disorder I take meds (Paxil, for one), which really help. I quit taking Depakote without consulting my psychiatrist. I'm very glad I stopped taking it, because it turns out that it was responsible for serious tremors I was having. People noticed how shaky my hands were. I'm really glad I quit taking it! I was a JW for approximately ten years. Toward the end I started feeling depressed. I don't think I could ever set foot in a Kingdom Hall again for any reason. Too toxic. Elders don't know how to treat or deal with mental illness. They don't really understand it for one thing. They just aren't cut out to help people with mental health issues.

Commentary on the Letter of James
by lepermessiah inzoiks inspired this thread when he mentioned this book elsewhere.. i have read other threads on this forum about it, but i always enjoy the fresh insight on here.. commentary on the letter of james was always my favorite book from wtbs, partly because i love the book of james, but also because it was one of the books that dealt with more practical christian living than constant wt doctrine.. i mentioned to a number of people that i loved that book, and got a few comments of "well, you know that book was written by an apostate.".
it didnt take me long to do a little math - that book came out i believe in 1979/1980, right around the time of the great purge.
how could someone write such an excellent book and then be branded an apostate just a few months later???.

Hmmm, now I would really like to read the Letter of James in the Bible. It sounds awesome. Good for the so-called apostate who wrote 'Commentary on the Letter of James'. I admire people like him and Raymond Franz!!

I once asked a former Witness about people in parts of Africa who have never heard about God and the Bible. He said they would be destroyed, because they should know what's right or wrong or something like that. There's no way I can believe God would destroy them! That would be so cruel, and I just don't believe a merciful God would hurt these people! I can't get over it that there are people who believe God would destroy them! How cold, callous, and stupid. This person who told me this is actually a decent, nice person, which makes it all the worse that he would believe this.

From where? Morals.
by AK - Jeff inthere is great debate regarding the matter of morals/ethics, and this particularly true whenever there is interaction between religiously driven portions of a culture, and those who maintain no religious opinion or even subscribe to atheism.
that cultural clash occurs often on this forum and others like it.. believers in god often attribute moral choices with godliness.
yet, among billions who have lived without any attachment to god in the particular sense that is often considered the driving influence [christianity, islam, judaism, or other organized religion] there have always been men and women whose 'moral character' is above reproach, even when measured with a black/white index of religious thought.. morality holds an arbitrary position among mankind.

To me, the sense of morality and ethics is just there. These two traits are innate, a part of us, not something from a religion. I don't care much about religion anymore, though I certainly believe in God and His Son Jesus. I think that if God created humankind in HIs image, then morals and ethics come with His image. Anyway, just my two cents worth. :-)

Letter from WT's Haiti Branch Committee re: Society's relief response
by Dogpatch injust got this in, don't know if it was mentioned here yet, but this illustrates how the watchtower views/responds to emergencies.
note the dig on university and "higher education" (especially sad for a poor country like haiti with poorly educated masses).. randy.
it was a terrifying moment for all!

This reminds me of the comment Pat Robertson made about the earthquake in Haiti - - that Haiti made a pact with the devil in order to gain independence from France, thus the earthquake (???). Such stupid, insensitive comments made by so-called Christians, Witnesses or otherwise! All people deserve help and support in case of disasters. Period. How can JWs be so blinded as to not see that?! In any kind of disaster, anywhere.

It is so sad about the nurse! I was wondering if it is unrealistic to have clothing drives for Haiti. I know that things were sent to Korea after the Korean War. Just a thought.
