Reconnecting with an old friend
by dissed inmy wifes biggest complaint about the jw's is what they do to families, they tear them apart.
whether for disfellowsipping, or the so-called bad association, the gb needs to separate them from you, so you won't separate yourself from the gb.. she laments that her bestess of friends from childhood was taken away from her by the jw's.
true, she tried to witness to her after college but debbie respectfully listened and decided it wasn't for her.

Blue Grass, I agree with you wholeheartedly that the action was stupid. My point is that is the stupid way in which young JWs were groomed to act. Why do you assume I was an adult at the time? Most of the Dubs I know were under 20 when they made the same stupid decision. For a Dub there are generally two deciding factors in a mate: are they a JW and am I sexually attracted to them? Yes, it's 100% stupid. That's the way this group is, and that's the way I was raised to be. We weren't allowed to date like normal people so most of us were mentally/emotionally stunted when it came to choosing a mate.
The comment, however, was true. If we had sex first, I wouldn't have married the creep. And if I wasn't in this ridiculous cult, I wouldn't have married the creep.

Religion, a force for good?
by Dean Fox inis religion a force for good?.
the knee jerk reaction from most people who hold to a religious belief is "yes, of course it is.
" then when you point out that religion is used to motivate people to commit suicide bombings they will likely concede that this isn't always the case.. in one instance though someone said religion is always a force for good because the intentions are always good, even those of a suicide bomber.

Welcome to the board Dean!
I believe that people are a force for good-or they can be. It seems you and I are on a similar wavelength here.
I think that the religion you are a part of is irrelevant. It is the act of choosing a religion (or lack thereof) that makes a person commit to a moral path. When we go along with a religion because we are born into it or everyone around is doing it, we didn't put any real mental effort into it.
When, later in life, we are confronted with a choice of which path to follow, and we really make an examination and choose based on what seems right, whether we choose a religious path or an a-theistic one, we are usually more committed to following through on it. At that point, the religion becomes either the tool or the cheerleader to see us through the choice we have already made to do good.
I think that "good" requires a combination of thought and feeling. People who do bad things in the name of religion are the kind who rely on a whole lot of feeling with little to no thought.

I had all the game of a nerdy, ex missionary JW. Go figure....
Jeff, some of us think nerds are hot.
I had to wait three months. I just stopped attending but still acted like a JW at work because I worked with one and didn't want to be outed. Then I moved across the country and I was free. I started dating immediately. Gave my mother a birthday cake and gift. Visited my non-Dub family for the holidays. Tried an illegal substance to cure a medical problem (didn't work). Started doing volunteer work. Finally made arrangements to go to college. Have a wonderful boyfriend and planning on having kids, something I wouldn't do as a Dub. Started researching other religions, doing yoga, going to a few church/Buddhist activities.
In other words, I didn't play around. Once I was out, I was out. And I will NEVER go back.

For anyone to know the truth and go back to follow scum like GB it would be like Jesus going back to Judas and seating him on the left hand of God.
Love this analogy.

Praying, it's appropriate if the elders say it's appropriate. The only voice that can override theirs is a CO or bethel. And neither of those sources will override an elder at the R&F's request.
A chaperone is whatever the elders present say it is. Some elder say it's ok to be alone together in a room as long as there's someone else in the house. Some say you must have an adult, baptized witness in good standing present and watching you at all times.
Scully, I'm in full agreement with you.

JD, that's true. And I think it's a decent point to bring up with Dubs who try to claim they're different (not that it will have much impact on most of them). I just don't think it's particularly useful for non-Dubs, as the header on that page suggests. I could pick a handful of atrocities commited by Lutherans and say you should think twice before getting involved with one of them and it would have as much merit.

I'll do it for you if you do it for me. I've been out of work for four months and I'm supposed to be hired next week, but this company is not instilling me with a lot of confidence.

I don't think the fact that individual JWs commit horrible crime says anything against the religion itself. You can find examples like that for most, if not all religious groups. I think what speaks them is they way they handle crimes (like pedophilia) as an organization.
