Did You Hope Certain Newly Appointed Elders Would Change Things In Your Hall?
by minimus ini used to hear it all of the time!
i was 24 when i was first appointed as an elder.
certain ones who were disillusioned with the "old guard" were really hoping i'd come on board and change the way the body of elders did things.

Nothing changes. If it does, it just gets worse.

Elders who step down for little or no reason?
by Truthexplorer inwithin the past decade, two elders stepped down in my old congregation.
actually one was taken off for commiting adultery and therefore reproved, but the other one simply stepped down for no apparent reason.
also, in another congregation i used to attend for a short time, i was shocked to hear of another elder stepping down, again for no apparent reason.. i am wondering if there has been an increase in the number of elders stepping down for no obvious reason and to see if this is a worrying trend causing alarm for the society.. i am thinking the past 10 years, particularly with the internet being available to so many people around the world today; but have you experienced many elders stepping down in your congregation or past congregation?

LL........................Maybe so. And BTW, I'm sorry for your situation. I dont think theres anything worse than growing up in an environment where you hear all kinds of good things at the meeting and then go home and see the opposite for the rest of the week.
I have family that grew up in that environment. Only difference was daddy wasn't an elder. That's screwed up.

Truth....................First of all there's a BIG difference between stepping down and being removed for Adultery.
Rarely do elders "step down" for little or no reason. Stepping down is most times an "out" for elders who are being railroaded or being prepared to be removed.
They are given a chance to save face by "stepping down" as tho there demotion was for little or no reason. There winds up being little shame in stepping down.
However, to be "removed" indicates that there was something really bad going on and the guy deserved to lose all his priviledges and standing because he no longer scripturally qualifies.

Sigh...............
All the comments were about "loyalty to the GB" obedience to the GB
"If you disagree with some teaching, YOU have the problem and you should keep it to yourself"
Etc.
Mind control at its best

Tell your "friend" to Listen to Sir82................verrry good advice. Sounds goofy but true.
If you get lucky with the committe chosen, you will have good results. But if you get some assholes with agendas and an inability to discern, they will judge by numbers. (Cuz its easy)
"How many time did you do the nasty?" Only once? OK then, you get reproved. "Twice? Holy shit! You must not be repentent. DF for you!
Meeting over.
If one gets DFed and the other reproved, is there some made up JW law that lets them continue their relationship if they've been thinking about marriage or does that end their relationship until the DFed one gets reinstated?
In this no win situation............the Non DF'd one will be told not to associate with the DF one. (Yeah right) If you do, YOU will be DF for associating with a DF person.
Have fun!

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree
by cameo-d ini felt this subject deserved it's own thread.. .
quote:.
this jesus character is recorded in two books of the bible as vandalising a fig tree for reasons that make absolutely no sense to me at all.. i have mentioned this stupidity a couple of times on this forum and the only attempt anyone had at explaining his actions completely ignored grammar and context.. .

This is indeed an interesting account. But it is not allegorical or symbolic. It is very literal, as much as the spectacular accound of Lazarus' resurrection or Jesus walking on water. Even Jesus talking about transferring "this mountain", the Mount of Olives, was literal. Think about it, is walking on water or resurrecting someone from the dead "easier" than transferring a mountain. No, they are equally difficult. Just as Yoda said to Luke Skywalker ...."size matters not" with the force.
The force Jesus was talking about was the holy spirit. The holy spirit has the power to enable a human to walk on water, raise someone from the dead, shrivel up trees, and transfer mountains.
The context shows that Jesus was teaching his disciples the power of faith and prayer. What's interesting is that power of faith and prayer have never been demonstrated since. But there was one man that did demonstrate an amazing example of faith besides Jesus. It was Peter.
Peter, a human, walked on water, and for some distance according to the account. It wasn't symbolic. It literally happened. And for two thousand years no one since has even come close to such a demonstration. Why? Why spend the time recording the account and several pages of the Bible dedicated to an account that ultimately no one would be able to apply?
We dont know. Is it possible that it was recorded for some purpose to be revealed in the future?
The bottom line is that Jesus was demonstrating the power of the Holy Spirit that humans can tap into through faith and prayer. But how?
No one has shown the ability since Peter.
Stay tuned.
