  I am replying to your post #480. This is not a Watchtower meeting where the answer is regurgitated from the text, rather than sparking an original thought. Go to the Hall if you want that sort of interaction. You will ALWAYS stay on topic there - there is no deviation.

  You could not state the things you say here ( 1919 is goofy and 1914 is beginning to look like another mistake ) as a candidate for baptism and not expect to have your baptismal request denied.

  In order to be baptised, in order to be a member in good standing, you must believe perfectly in imperfect people and their writings in the Watchtower magazine. Anything else is, at the least, running ahead of Jehovah; at worst, apostacy.

  Infallibility is not just a 'Catholic" thing. It is much more a JW thing that Catholicism. Catholics have very specific, stringent rules for what may be declared infallible. With the Watchtower, as soon as it hits print in the rags, it's as if Jehovah himself spoke it and the Witnesses better toe the company line.

  Which of the 80+ study questions may a baptismal candidate disagree with openly and still be considered for baptism?

  It is human nature to guess. It is not human nature to insist that people believe infallibly in fallible people who guess. It is not human nature to disfellowship those who voice their doubts about these "guesses". It is not human nature to preface writings with statements like "these are God's words...God's dates...God's prophecies". Those things are the mark of an organization drunk with the taste of power over other human beings. These are the hallamrks of a place very far from God.

  this was in the july km, so i thought i would share.. the march report for the united states was outstanding!

  new peaks in hours, return visits, and bible studies were reached.

  I'm sure we're counted as a return visit. Each month the magazines are rolled up and stuck through our door handle. No one has tried to talk to us or has rung the doorbell for a couple of years.

  I've always felt that the JWs painted themselves into the corner of having to call their God "Jehovah" because of the 144,000 anointed doctrine. If only 144,000 are brothers of Christ and entitled to use the term "Father" then to whom do the unwashed masses direct their prayers? That stupid erroneous doctrine has led to all of the twisting and turning the WT has done to justify their bible version, their doctrine, and their shutting off heaven to their followers.

  Jesus did not call his Father by his first name, and neither should we. it's disrespectful IMO and denigrates the name that Jesus said to keep "Hallowed". That means to keep it holy, and sacred - not something used by a corporate publishing company.

  I posted on an internet board for years with a JW woman. When she had some health problems, several of us said we would keep her in our prayers. She pointedly asked us not to, because our prayers weren't heard by Jehovah, but demons might hear them and jeopardize her health. I am not kidding! And this was a woman who was an internet acquaintance for several years by this time.

  My stepson used to do the "say your own prayer after the infidels are finished" when we'd say grace at the dinner table. Our prayer didn't "count" to bless HIS food. Urgh. It's such a hateful, impolite, unkind religion.

  I agree, PSacramento. I grew up Catholic, and the Advent season ( the four weeks before Christmas ) was so beautiful because it prepared us for the birth of Christ, made us take a look at our lives and how we could be kinder, more loving, more selfless towards others. It was a great time that focused on the lessons Christ brought to us through his example.

  Traditions like birthdays and holidays tie one generation to the next, and create a sense of connectedness, which is an essential human need. By denying that essence of humanity in all but very perfunctory ways, the Watchtower tries to kill off the natural affection that people have for family, for joy, for laughter, for unreserved love. Once that is gone, peopel are capable of anything, in my opinion.

  When my JW stepson came to live with us after his mother was DF'd, the hardest thing I had to do was try to instill a sense of joy, happiness, silliness, and how great it is just to be alive.

  jdhf, troubled, and winston - good posts. Winston, I would only say that no one knows what day Christ was born. In my family ( non jw's ) we often have to wait months before having a family celebration for a family member's birthday because we can't all get together or the kid's are away at college. To us it is not when someone was born, it is that they WERE born, and we can't imagine our lives or the world without them. We celebrate life. The Watchtower seems to hate life and all of the joys that go along with being human.

  On Christmas Eve in my family, all of us gather around a big table ( there are usually about 20 if the kids bring a friend). The youngest grandchild, who is now 18, traditionally says grace. We then thank Jesus for his human existence and what he brought to us. We then lift our glasses to the family members who are no longer with us and remember how we love and cherish them. After we wipe a tear or two we dig in to a great feast, followed by presents and much merry making. We celebrate Christ's entrance into the world, which we believe changed the history of humanity forever. It really has nothing to do with what day Christ was born; rather, just like our children, it was that he WAS born.

  I hope any Witness that feels this way about the birth of a child gets sterilized as quickly as possible. NO child deserves to be born into a situation where from infancy they are looked upon as the devil's property. Shades of the movie 'Carrie"!

  The only reason the Watchtower eschews celebrating birthdays is that it is one more isolationist tactic to destroy a child's sense of himself and having nothing to look forward to in life but the death of anyone not just like his parents. It is an "initiation rite" into the cult to learn to swallow such claptrap and attribute it to God's will. By blaming the desire to celebrate life and joy on "pride" and being a part of 'Satan's World" they effectively further destroy the ability to experience happiness and a love of God based on anything but fear and self loathing. The Watchtower repalces nattural love and affection with the most unwholesome, insidious sort of conditional false "love". Sickens me to even contemplate it.
