So is faith. My point is that people demonstrate loyalty past the point of logic. It's a virtue, but it might be logically argued to fail to be in the person's best interest at times.

Escaping Indoctrination - Faith Isn't a Virtue.
by cofty inthe unknown writer of the gospel of john put the following words in jesus' mouth, "blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.".
persuading countless generations that it is a virtue to believe incredible things on insufficient evidence, is one of religion's cleverest tricks.. the more incredible the claim; the more flimsy the evidence; the stronger the belief; the greater the virtue.. this is the exact opposite of how we operate in every other aspect of our lives.. rational people must demand objective evidence for everything they are asked to believe.
"extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence".. leaving the dogmatic claims of the watchtower is only a first step.

Ostracism more damaging than bullying

we tend to underestimate the damage that social ostracism does.

How we feel about ourselves in a large part is from how others react to us. A lot of the signals are non-verbal. Do people casually smile back at us on the street, or turn away? Do we have someone in our lives who looks us deep in the eyes every day and say that they love us, and wish us a good day?

Or has a parent, following their religious instruction, formally tell their child that they will no longer communicate unless it is "necessary family business"?
The rejection is devastating, and injures both parties.

Karen Armstrong also advocates a separation of faith from logic, and blames the mixing of the two for much of the problems with fundamentalism. It leads to untenable, ridiculous positions.

All of natural causes, I assume, Lois? In a way, they each died at the end of their own Armageddon.

I think religions should stay out of science and logic altogether. That doesn't mean they have no value, just no value in science discussions.

I have found it both traumatizing and necessary to test my beliefs on more than one occassion. I've had to give up some cherished concepts. I think the exercise was good for me, sort of like an intense workout. Painful at the time but the end result is sleek.
On the other hand, I don't think I could convince any other person to go through the same exercise if I told them that their entire belief system is crap.

You should know that people are listening when you speak. - Lemonade
There are fools everywhere. I'm dealing with a co-worker right now who refused to listen. I got mad. Then I got logical. I set up a plan to deal with the damage this person has done and now they are feeling the pain. It's not like I didn't warn her.
She's trying to make it very personal, but I'm paid to do the job. I'll get the job done and then we can deal with the personal stuff. As in, I'll never work with her on a project again.
