since it is the convention season (and i am not attending this year or ever again), and i have been seeing other posts about some of the goings on at the various ic's and rc's, i am reminded of some of the truly embarrassing behavior i have "witnessed" (pun intended) over my lifetime of being a jdub at the various conventions and assemblies.
probably the most disillusioning experience at a convention that i have ever had was one year when i volunteered to be an attendant.
all of the volunteers were asked to attend a special meeting a few months beforehand to get instructions for our duties as attendants.
What struck me was the sterility of the lunch break, with each family breaking out their regulation size coolers. Some families had a feast, some bare bones. A few went the natural route with fruits and nuts, obviously preparing for post-Armageddon meal prep. No sharing!
What a contrast to the early church.

What's the alternative? That his entire life's mission has been a collossal waste of time? When a Witness says, "This is Jehovah's Organization, even though there are a lot of problems", they have retreated in to cult mode. It's a conversation stopper.
Talk about something other than the Witnesses. Like kittens or the weather. Switch him back in to authentic mode before you discuss again.

JW's annoy and bore me. I'm not typically angry with them unless they interfere with my family.

Because of your background, I bet you are particularly sensitive about any abuse of power.
we were taught for 100 years that the end or armageddon is imminent, as if it is coming in a hurry.
but look now at the new way of sharing god's kingdom in uk which i find as a complete irony.

Haven't they about given up on this generation? I get the feeling they only want to attract those who are actively seeking (seek and you will find) for the truth. You can't find them at the doors any more (other than the shut-ins) because people are either working or driving their kids to soccer practice.
june 28 1914 archduke ferdinand was killed by a serbian government sponsored assassination team.. this was the trigger event of world war i. actually some have called it world war (part 1) followed less than 30 years later by world war (part 2).. in retrospect this was a useful date for jw's.. it has propelled them for 100 years.. of course jw's have massaged their predictions about the significance of 1914 over the years.. do you feel that jw's would be what they are today without that great war?
do you think that the shooting down of the passenger plane over east ukraine will be an equivalent moment that pushes putin into a corner where he will have to fight the west?

Notice with all the posturing neither Putin nor Obama are talking about direct confrontation. Neither wants that. After reading Pinker's book, I am pretty confident that we will manage to avoid world-wide wars in our future.
