We can't directly test the past. So other deductive methods are used. We can't touch stars, but we can learn through deduction much about their composition, speed, temperature, and makeup.

What christians don't want to admit
by opusdei1972 inwhen i left the wt organization, i continued to believe in the bible, so i wanted to confirm and refine, as much as possible, my faith that the true god is in the bible.
so i began to discuss with skilled christians, who were also ex-witnesses.
but i was surprised when some of them tried to relax my fundamentalist position on the literalness of the genesis account.

It has to do with what people value, I guess.

Challenge to Athiests - is Religion a Pox on Mankind?
by jgnat ini've spent the last few years examining my core beliefs to test what still stands.
i've let go of an inviolate bible, demoted jesus to a failed prophet, and god as unable to act against injustice.
our universe made itself.

As a reminder of the good that religions offer, here's an infographic I made.

The bible isn't God. This is where those who insist on an inerrant bible to bolster their faith in God get in trouble. Prove the bible fallible, and down goes God, too.

Besides, the group is self-limiting by being so extreme. It will lose it's backers.

opusedei, not all Christian scholars are trying to justify the flood. If you called them apologists, that might work. And there's still the fringe fundamentalists that insist it must have been global because the bible says so.
Heck, the jews have been treating the Adam and Eve tale as an allegory for a very long time.

jhine, if you are going to search for the original, unadulterated gospels (let's stick with the gospels as a test case) you have a job ahead of you. Because the scraps and letters that were handed about in the first and second century did not follow the same scrupulous rules for accuracy that we live with today.
We are used to accuracy in our modern society because that is what makes our machine age run. Standard screws are all the same and function the way we expect. Printers run thousands of copies of the same book, identical to each other. Heck, take apart your cell phone and marvel at the intricacy, and that they are all made the same.
The selection of the gospels and approved texts came much later. They were picked for their fit to orthodoxy, not for their proximity to early Christianity.

galaxie, how can we disentangle at this point what came from Jesus' mouth from the great ideas that were attributed to him afterwards?

Such are myths born, opus, and always has it been so. I am fascinated by the stories of Thunderbird here in North America. Offensive to me is the pseudo-scientific search for origins and truth in the Christian message that has it's own origins at the dawn of the industrial age. The Catholics know that there was no such ting.

Why isn't the world a frazzle?
by punkofnice inwhen i was a jw i had a lot of silly ideas that seemingly explained things i wondered about.
arguments from ignorance or special pleading i suppose.
actually, my conclusions were daft.. one thing i have wondered about and i don't know if anyone else has, is why man hasn't either rendered the earth to a cinder or why there haven't been more nukes go off against nations.

Having worked for provincial leaders for over twenty-five years, I am confident that if there is anything to fear it is incompetence, not conspiracy. If there is any backroom stuff it is private, between a limited number of individuals, and local. Otherwise it won't remain secret. Rumors are leaky.
Worldwide, we hang in a balance of mutual cooperation.
