Okay, I'm setting up a visit from the local Dubs..
by Abaddon in... don't worry, this is just for recreational purposes... anyone who has ever read a few of my posts will realise i am unlikely to 'go back' (the idea make me want to heave).. i had a few dubs turn up last year sometime, ... i live in holland, but am english, and my dutch isn't so good, so i asked them to send someone who could speak english round.. they sent round a wal-mart (well, the dutch equivalent) dressed pioneer couple, he dumb, she actually quite bright, but their english wasn't that good (they didn't even know what apostate meant).
in any case, as this was the first time i had some witnesses to myself since i'd left 9 years earlier (other than my family, but they don't count), i managed to speak for about 45 minutes before drawing breath, or really allowing them to talk, going from the un issue through blood to evolution to prophetic failure.
however, the language level was too low for us to really communicate well, and i was, er, i guess you could say, "getting it off my chest".... a few weeks ago another dub called round briefly, and i mentioned i was english, and lo and behold, last saturday, a pio from the local english speaking congregation came round.

Refiner's Fire, that was so nice to bring my little article bttt. SOOTHING APPEARING - so true, even HYPNOTIC, maybe?
Ozziepost, it is kinda funny how Witnesses consider themselves superior scholars. When I was a little girl, we attended a United Church. From my observations I figured a pastor prepared for a sermon by picking a relevant topic and picking a scripture to fit. He seemed to use the bible like a compilation of proverbs and useful sayings. There is enough in that book that if you try hard enough, you can find something to fit. The WT articles are written the same way. Very little attention is given to the original intent of the Bible writers. Funny. I would never associated WT-Conservative with United Church-Liberal.
Pistoff - insightful comparison, there. My dad, though well-meaning, has the same deadening effect on my ambition, the poor man. He comes from the buck-up-you-can-try-harder school of parenting. Praise is sparse. I know it is not his fault, that is the way he was raised. But his message is too tired at my age, and I am tired. I cope by NOT TELLING him what my latest hairbrained scheme is. And I consider him a great dad, and I would not trade him in for anybody.

JPM, you are a pretty sharp dude to pick up on what we are warning poor Steph about. As much as your girl might have cared for you, at one point she had to pick her religion or you. And guess who she picked.
You must be a pretty reasonable guy to stay friends with your ex's. Kudos to you.

HEALER (Submissive Extrovert Concrete Feeler )
jgnatLike just 9% of the population you are a HEALER (SECF)-- caring, good with people, and patient. You are completely selfless and full of love. As a concrete feeler, you do well with your emotions, which are very strong. You understand and appreciate *why* you feel the way you do, and for the most part you're at peace with yourself.
Suffering in the world really pisses you off.
In relationships, it's easy for you to get hurt. Avoid all kinds of dominant (D***) people, *especially* in dating or marriage. You are a motherly figure, even if you're a guy. If you're a girl, make sure you're a mom some day. The world's children need people like you. If you're a guy, don't even think about it. Most pedophiles are HEALERS.
On the rare occasions when you try to assert yourself, you're cute and awkward, but highly effective. -

Blondie, I look forward to your post every week. I hope you are feeling better. Here are my comments:
Its study time! Boy, they really know how to suck all the joy out, dont they?
Paragraphs are wasted on instruction as to how, where and when to study. From the illustration, a witness of good consicence would conclude that couches are too comfy soft, tempting one to snooze through these snoozy articles.
...their motive is pure. Yeah, blondie, their non-apology apology really got to me. I picked their apology apart on a separate thread.
What is the Value of Gold?
p. 9...so-called precious metal...what true value, though, does gold have? ...with its artificial and arbitrary value! Incredible that the WT has completely missed Solomons point (Proverbs 2:4). Men seek after gold precisely because it has great value. Besides the mystique mankind has given it, gold has natural qualities that make it uniquely suited for many industrial uses. And it is rare. Solomon encourages us to search for understanding as zealously as if we were looking for rare gold because knowledge also is a great treasure. If you were lost in a desert and dying of thirst, which would you prefer: a bar of gold or a glass of water?
My answer to such a silly question,
If you were lost in a desert and dying of thirst, which would you prefer: a WT rag or a glass of water?

we also had the choice of puting a picture next to our user name.

I will stick with a name I can remember. I am so absent-minded, I would forget my birth name if it wasn't spelled out on my birth certificate. I spent one entire school grade responding to "fruit of the loom". I am afraid if I changed jgnat, I would never be able to sign on again.
On the other hand, I am thrilled that Ugly_Duckling is now a Swan, and that Happy_Guy_of_Goodness is now simply Happy. Just looking at his name made my fingers tired.

Staying Awake Or Keeping In A Frenzy?
by AlanF inwe ex-jws know very well how much the watchtower society put us under pressure to believe that "armageddon is just around the corner".
they've been doing it in one form or another ever since charles taze russell began publishing his nonsense.
in 1877 he advocated that true christians should believe that christ would "take them home" in 1878. when that didn't happen he moved the event up to 1881. after that he focused on 1914.. the society is still doing pretty much the same thing, building up expectations and then revising them, decade after decade.

When Jehovah created the world, he stopped to say "it is good". When he was finished, he took a holiday. He instituted rest as a holy event, so we would never forget the good thing He did when He created this world. As Jehovah's creations, we must sleep regularly, or risk insanity.
When is a Witness ever good enough? When can it's members ever stop and take a break?

Enjoy Personal Study of Gods Word WT December 1, 2002 Religion - How Should it be Financed? We had an awesome Vice Principal in elementary school. He arranged for the entire sixth grade to climb a mountain. Thats right; we all climbed Old Baldy. That Vice Principal imparted a special gift to us all, which is not easily measured on a grade chart. Old Baldy wasn't exactly Mount Everest, but it did manage to touch each and every one of us with a sense of adventure and wonder. The event was a huge success, and became an annual rite of passage for sixth graders ever after. Four years later when my brother went to Old Baldy, the event had been virtually ruined by meddling adults. First of all, the kids had to earn their right to go by completion of various assignments, projects, and reports regarding the geography and history of Old Baldy. Second, a miscreant child who earned a black mark in the year was banned from going. My heart sank as my brother described the complex set of rules and guidelines that every sixth grader had to navigate to earn the "right" to visit Old Baldy. I grieved for the "bad" kids who would lose out on this life-changing event because of some stuffy old rule-makers.
Which brings me to this weeks study article. This is the most patronizing piece of writing I have seen yet.
p. 5 Please open your Bible and read these verses. Then we will discuss them together . The article then expounds over six paragraphs what Solomon wisely kept to six verses. In this article, the beauty of the bible is buried in a mountain of language loaded with duty. ...we must...some may .. find it laborious...the responsibility falls on us individually...we must...we should never allow [distractions] to treat Gods Word with indifference...pay attention...we must...pay attention...we should...appreciate personal study...effort, discipline, and sacrifice...what should be the motive...we should desire knowledge...in order to please God...we want to be worthy...to be a worthy and approved servant...how closely we adhere to Gods word...our personal study must affect our thinking and our conduct...we must protect and control our mind...pay attention...flush out selfish, fleshly thoughts... The WT has managed to turn the study of the bible in to a complete chore.
If anyone is genuinely interested in personal study, I suggest they skip this week's article all together. Since bible study is encouraged by the WTS, go do it.
But why let the WT do all your thinking for you? Look up a scripture and consider how you may apply it personally. Make the bible your own. While researching this article, I found dailytext.com, a set of verses offered daily with no commentary. The intent is that the reader can reflect personally on how that scripture affects his or her life. At the same site, I found a guideline for personal meditation and prayer that Martin Luther used. I am going to give it a try.
Martin Luther's prayer patternhas been used at Mount Carmel in the form of an acronym which spells T.R.I.P. to outline the discipline of reading a Bible verse, and then asking the following four questions of that verse:
What in that verse am I
Thankful for? What does it reveal that I
Regret or need to confess? How should I
Intercede or what should I pray for? What
Purpose for my day does this verse give me?T
hanks, Regret, Intercession, and Purpose, or T.R.I.P. These letters represent the four questions that are being used by many today to unlock the personal application of a scripture passage. Meditation on the daily passages while focusing on these four questions is what reveals the application of each verse to one's life. For a meaty article on how to study, check this out:
