I wonder if meditation is a form of self-hypnotism. But I notice that the two disciplines barely talk to each other, and they use different terminology for what I suspect is the same activity.

Denial is a perfectly acceptable way of handling trauma. Many who survived 9/11 or lost loved-ones chose denial. It gave them many years of peaceful living.

Are You Raising An Introvert?
by darth frosty inits not easy being an introvert in an extrovert worldespecially when youre a kid.
it is even more difficult if none of the adults in the kids life recognize that the child is an introvert.
this doesnt happen only when the childs parents are extroverts, but also with introverted parents who have never understood their own introverted nature.. .

I can turn on the extrovert charm when the situation demands. It's not that the introvert doesn't have the skills; it just has a different effect on them. It takes a lot of energy. After training all day, I have to go sit in a hot tub and soak it out of me. Double points if I lock myself in with a book.

The spelling fairy says: It's 'atheist', not 'athiest'
by Apognophos inatheists are people who are "a-" (without) "theism" (a belief in god).
they are not "athiests"; they are not "athier" than everyone else, nor is "athy" a word.. .
this isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but it's a mistake i see every day on here and i thought it might be nice to have a topic we can bump just to periodically remind people of the proper spelling, especially since they are sometimes referring to their very own beliefs.

It is only fair as an introvert to be explicit to my extroverted loved-ones. No, just ignoring them is not a hint. Extroverts are wounded when they are ignored. Lay out exactly how much time is enough, and what is too much. Then, I am at my best during our shared time, and I give the needed attention my extroverts thrive on. Afterwards, I shut it off without guilt.

Cadellin, I love getting tablets in to the hands of seniors. They can Facetime their grandchildren. There are other great apps they might enjoy. I put a tambourine app on mine, for instance. Never know when you might need a tambourine.
Computer literacy can be great for these older ones. Expose them to the wider culture, and away from the meetings. Heck, they can quietly play with an app during the service.

100 Years Ago Today: World War I Began - July, 28, 1914
by Oubliette in100 years since world war i07/28/14 07:44 am by timothy noah and johnny simon.
"one hundred years ago today, emperor franz josef of austria-hungary declared war on serbia in retaliation for the assassination one month earlier of his heir apparent, archduke franz ferdinand, by a serbian pan-slavic nationalist.
what might otherwise have remained a regional conflict between the dying hapsburg empire and one of its former holdings instead became, through a tangle of alliances and a global power imbalance, two world wars that began in 1914 and ended in 1945, with a 21-year intermission for the jazz age and the great depression.".

Pinker argues that Woodrow Wilson's call to self-determination has generated more conflict. Wars break out at borders. Make more borders, make more wars. Pinker argues rather for egalitarian Nation-States, tolerant of the ethnicities and cultures within it's borders.
A tragic example playing itself right now is Sudan. A few years ago a plebiscite granted the Christian minority self-determination and a right to a separate nation. The northern Muslim majority took this as a threat and has redoubled it's efforts to exterminate the Christians.

State Department report: Religious persecution makes migrants out of millions
by KiddingMe inhttp://www.washingtonpost.com/national/religion/state-department-report-religious-persecution-makes-migrants-out-of-millions/2014/07/28/ef30cd50-1698-11e4-88f7-96ed767bb747_story.html.
religionstate department report: religious persecution makes migrants out of millions by brian pellot | religion news service july 28and then there were nine.
secretary of state john kerry announced on monday (july 28) that turkmenistan has joined the state departments list of worst religious freedom offenders.. the state departments countries of particular concern list had remained static since 2006, when eight countries burma, china, eritrea, iran, north korea, saudi arabia, sudan and uzbekistan were designated as cpcs.. justifying the addition of turkmenistan, kerry cited reports of people detained, beaten and tortured for their beliefs, prohibited from wearing religious attire and fined for distributing religious materials.. turkmenistan, a mostly sunni muslim country in central asia, once part of the soviet union, forbids private worship and greatly restricts foreign travel for pilgrimages and religious education.. all religious organizations in the country must register with the government, and shiite muslim groups, protestant groups and jehovahs witnesses have all had their registration applications denied in recent years.

A point made in Pinker's book "Better Angels of our Nature" is that terrorist groups especially, to remain in the public eye, must display ever increasing extreme behavior. These extremes however, ultimately make them highly unpopular. It is as if every terrorist group comes with an automatic expiry date when people say, "enough".
I wonder how the public responds to the ultra-radical Islamist terrorist group, ISIL, when it bombs locally cherished and ancient Mosques.

State sponsored repression, however, is another thing altogether. In those examples, exposure and displeasure from the larger world community may convince these states to become more tolerant.
