two polite elderly ladies knocked on my door to share the good news of the kingdom with me.. i was pondering whether i should speak against the organization, but immediately knew it just would not work.
i thought i should say a polite but firm no.

Actually, though I like some of the people here in this thread, and so that is why I am bothering with it.
Well, OK - me too. But I have already just about typed my fingers down to the nubs on "Bush government demolition of the twin towers", and all the other crazy conspiracy theories out there. This is kind of an unexpected source for that kind of stuff - so maybe it is worth it to point out some facts.

Just as a side point - I saw an Animal Planet episode on venomous animals.
They pointed out that most snake-venom antivenom compounds are derived from horse blood after dosing the horse with continuous small amounts of the actual venom. This develops specific anti-bodies to the poison.
It reminded me that there was a big deal over the polio vaccine back when I was a JW kid - many local JWs bought into a rumor that it was somehow made from blood.
They pretty much put out the news on the local back channels that is wasn't really made from blood after all.
By witness logic, I suppose that they could eventually make the case that blood sausage is not really "whole blood" because a lot of the volatile elements get cooked out when it is made.

I am reminded of the JW woman who got hired as a christmas present wrapper and sued for her religious rights to not wrap christmas presents...

Well, religious freedom or not, all people have to obey the law - and that includes government regulation of property in a community. Whether we like it or not.
It also occurs to me that if the Aztec religion were still active, and they demanded the "religious right" to build a pyramid and cut out victims hearts on the solar solstice - they would naturally be denied that "right".

I think you did the right thing - you did not compromise yourself to make them happy, but did not get into an ugly argument, either.
Our opposition is to the idiots at the top of this religion, not the poor victims like these two old ladies.

i mean, i understood that up to 1953 the watchtower was against disfellowshipping and shunning, castigating the catholic church for the practice in the 1947 awake!
no mixed message here as russell proclaims the righteousness and neccessity of shunning.
The witnesses did not think this shunning up on their own - remember the novel "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne? That was set in early colonial times long before the witnesses ever existed.
