  Do You Need to Learn Hebrew and Greek? (WT 11/01/09)

  i'm sure quite a few of you on the board remember the km that discouraged learning the biblical languages.

  well, here are scans of this newer article from the nov public wt.

  very boring read with little direct prohibitions (understandable since its for outsiders), but still a bit of an eye roller with their reasons for not bothering to learn them.

  That was Fred Franz- unable to do Hebrew.

  Yup. Was this in some kind of court proceeding in either Ireland or Scotland? BTW, also in ancient history - did they just do away with the old Diaglot that was given to them by the Christedelphian guy when they redid it as the KIT? Or, is it possibly still available. I thought that part of the terms of the bequest was that they continue to publish it and make it available to the public.

  Wasn't there some story from the old days that either Russell or Rutherford were challenged in some court proceedings to read out something from the Hebrew or the Greek, and whoever it was was unable to?

  just asked a loyal dub i know why has the org now given out a song book, with so many songs taken out?

  she looked at her convention notes and replied that the soceity said that some of the songs in the old song book were too difficult for new people to learn to sing.. and this was said with all seriousness... she totaly brought it!.

  around a dozen years ago my congregation organised a "cong" party.

  all went well until out 80 year old anointed sister sang "big spender".

  i have never seen our cong so scared before.. .

  I think that here we might have to make a division between the "old, original, annointed" - and the "new, arrogant, annointed".

  that is, people who were JW prior to the Great Crowd teaching and really took it naturally as that was what everybody was...

  compared to nut jobs of today who are really playing some kind of self-delusional ego trip (or worse, are just cynically scamming the system)...

  Baptism Questions??

  this forum tends to get me thinking about things from the past and then roll my eyes.. i was recalling a particular pharasee in the congregation who used to love showing everyone how "smart" he was.. when i would go over the questions with someone, we would fly through them because it was usually with kids who were raised as jw's and could answer then in their sleep.

  (besides the fact it was an "open book" quiz.).

  well, mr pharasee used to always make it into a marathon session and take 2-3 hours to go over one section of the questions with someone.. he could take a simple question like "what is god's name?

  I was told it was because some of them were too old and new ones were needed???

  Which would explain the reason for reprinting them, but not - of course - the reason for changing the contents.

  how are the JW's viewed from the outside?

  i know while in the org we get told alot to tell everyone that we are jw's, cos its reputation is so good.

  but that dosn't explain why people still refuse to answer the doors to them, or hide when they come aknocking.. so how are jw's really viewed by the outside world?.

  It is not about blood, it is not about Christmas or Thanksgiving or Halloween, it is not about Flag Salute, or the END OF THE WORLD.

  Yeah - well - I guess there were people that thought Phil Spector was a very talented record producer and sound man.

  I suppose that there were people that thought that Michael Jackson should get a pass for fooling around with little boys because he could sing and dance.

  Should I go on to mention O.J.Simpson and that weirdo that used to play the TV character Barretta?
