What will they say as to why they don't celebrate ThanksGiving??

i plan on inviting a close family member ..(who has been a jw for several years).. to share thanksgiving with us this year.

my husband and i have never been jws.

what exactly is a jw's reason for not taking part in thanksgiving??.

You'll probably get the standard, "we should be thankful everyday, not just one day of the year!" responses.

Yes, that too - for whatever it could possibly mean. (the bible itself makes reference to christian feasts)

I believe that while the articles may not have specifically named the sin of "gluttony", there have been denunciations of overeating and overdrinking at Thanksgiving in the magazines. Certainly elders I knew were fond of saying it.

I don't have any JW reference materials nowadays, but probably somebody here with access could verify that.

I was serious, Lavender. That is really what many witnesses say about Thanksgiving. I had this discussion with them when I was leaving the JWs, and challenged them on Thanksgiving.

Other holidays they reject for being "pagan in origin" - but Thanksgiving was invented as a modern-day christian feast of thanks by the Puritans, who had also rejected the conventional christmas and easter. I asked what could possibly be wrong with it -

And I got told that it encouraged gluttony. REALLY.

Of course, the real reason the JWs don't like it is because it was not their invention.

i bet people has forgotten me but thats ok because i know they have helped me a lot on here.. .

anyways i think the last time i been on here i mentioned my jw sister not going to my wedding.

for those that do remember my story, the wedding was beautiful on the beach in key west, fl!

Exactly what I was thinking, OTWO. The good thing is, the JWN people here will not disfellowship her for either going to college or going back to meetings.

The JWs, on the other hand, would certainly shun her (and probably not reinstate her) for going to college, and likely disfellowship her if they knew she posted here.

Well, since my name got mentioned a page or two back while I was gone - let me set the record straight:

1) - as others have pointed out (thanks) I have NEVER advocated registration of Muslims in this country. Nor did I advocate dropping nuclear bombs on Islamic men, women and children, or denial of U.S. religious freedoms to Muslims - as one uber-pro-Islamic poster seems to be suggesting.

2) - I have already posted on this very thread that I think the Florida 50-man church and its preacher are dipping bat-guano crazy. They are as deluded by perhaps getting their 15 minutes on TV as the Octomom was and these stunts have absolutely no place in civilized society. Not only that, but their leader has the worst moustache I have seen since pictures surfaced of Osama Bin Laden.

3) - I have repeatedly pointed out that many of the far left on this board have a real blind spot when it comes to negativity towards Islam as compared to Islamic negative propaganda toward Israel, Christianity, and the democratic west in general. Invariably one poster in particular will bring up "the horrors of the crusades" and "christians commit terror acts too" anytime Islamic terror is denounced.

I am again amused at how much the American left dearly loves to point out intolerance against Muslims, but hates to point out Muslim intolerance toward others.

Wonder if the Taliban prayed much about blowing up those 1,000 year old statues of the Budda?

Tame animals in the New System

so i was thinking about this whole idea of animals being tame and getting along with each other and how the wts depicts this in their artwork.

i'm having a major issue with this.

how far down the food chain would this go?
