  i was told they were practically begging those elders and servants who are no longer "being used" to help carry the load once again.

  these people are unbelievable!.

  Your comments about the WT stance on facial hair reminded me of what I observed the other day when I was working at one of the most advanced hospitals in the state.

  I was there when the specialist staff were arriving for work. These were specialist doctors from just about every branch of medicine that there is, and nearly all were middle aged men (my apologies to all female posters on this board!)

  Of these, the majority had neatly groomed beards.

  - So much for not being able to trust a man with a beard!

  (Many also in senior manergerial positions where I work wear beards - all of whom look good thus groomed).

  My major regret is that I swallowed that nonsense for so long!

  it's ridiculous.

  i saw this so much in my 44 years in the jehovah's witness cult.

  whether it was elders, pioneers, or other people in the cult criticizing others for working too much at their employment or missing some service or meetings due to employment.

  The irony of this is the way I have seen the elders hound the congregation for donations when a new kingdom hall is planned.

  We are not supposed to have money, as per WT articles of the type just quoted here. Yet, when they need money to build a new kingdom hall, it is suddenly supposed to just magically appear.

  Back in the recession of 1990, our congregation was trying to build a new hall - however, nobody had the proverbial "two bob to rub together". (Many didn't even have a job). As a consequence, there were many pointed talks from the platform, which accused us all of having deep pockets and short arms.

  I wasn't the only one who was offended by that sort of talk!

  The WTS gives lip service - but only lip service - to those scriptures that describe salvation as being a free gift from God.

  However, that continuous stream of counsel from the WTS about "always doing more" could - and usually does - convey an entirely different message to those on the receiving end.

  By far the most JWs would argue strongly that salvation is earned by works :

  - not surprisingly, given the constant motivational talk from the WTS to get out there and sell more literature!.

  In a discussion with anybody that knows anything about the bible, though, the average JW would quickly get tripped up over this point (as I can recall happening to me).

  my family were all catholics.

  i think i would've been one simply because i was raised in it and even if i didn't agree with everything, i would still be able to talk to my friends and family.. i would think i'd be a catholic in name only.

  "religion" doesn't get me excited..

  i apologize if this has been mentioned, but i don't have the time to come on here as often.

  yesterday's bookstudy on divorce got my shorts in a bit of a knot.

  apparently, according to the god's love book, a wife could consider legal separation from her husband if she is physically abused, but (get this) only in the case of extreme physical abuse, and if the wife's life is in danger.

  I regret to have to say that this thread comes as no surprise to me : 
  - my first introduction to domestic violence occurred just after I started attending the local kingdom hall. (After - not before. While my own -so called "worldly" - parents did not always get on the best, nothing even remotely like that ever happened between them).

  The wife in this case was an extremely strong-willed person, and the husband was under fire from the elders for "not exercising his headship." Once, while talking about this situation , I heard one of the elders say that this brother "needed to clobber her". (Those were his exact words).

  I, too, remember reading those articles in the WT publications about how a Christian husband is supposed to deal with his wife.

  From what I saw happen in practice,though, I would have to agree with the others on this thread who have observed that the JWs pay only lip service to those passages of the bible.

  Always stuck vividly in my memory is the fact that I never saw anything like that happen while growing up in a "worldly" family.

  What religion do X-JWs belong to now?

  i get the feeling many x-jws are floating about aimlessly and don't join christendom, still living with the jw indoctrinated belief that they are all the work of the devil.

  does that make sense?

  are they supposed to sit around in small groups in their living rooms reading scripture like ray franz recommended in crisis of conscience?

  i was that one way to increase my field service time for me and my wife was by standing at a truck stop and hand out tapes to truckers in the early mornings.

  this is the same lot that is frequented by drug dealers and hookers.

  another time, while studying, i said i did not understand the blood issue.

  There were more than a few of them, but the worst of the worst bit of bad advice I was given was to throw in my apprenticeship after just 12 months.

  This was in 1972, and every b#%*dy fool knew that it all was not going to matter after 1975!
