Unfortunately the OWS in Oakland turned ugly and I hate to see businesses destroyed and people hurt.

by lifestooshort inwhen i was still a jw i remember my feelings of confusion caused by the co visit.
i just found them so discourging.
i knew what he was going to say.

When I was a publisher, I loved the CO visits. Usually a higher quality of talks being given. But when I became a servant, I did not look forward to the CO visits. Always wondered who he would condemn or what the cong or bro were not doing right.

If You Never Were A Witness Do You Think You Would've Had A Vastly Different Life?
by minimus inwould you have gone to college?.
would you have gone to jail?.
would you have been wealthy?.

I would not have dropped out of college. I would have been a history teacher or an accountant. I would have definitely been better off materially.

Do You Believe It Is Wrong To "Discipline" Your Child In A Physical Way?
by minimus inmy grandkids were being mouthy and they learned a new phrase, "shut your mouth".
it could be directed to their parents, grandparents or anyone who said something they didn't like.
they are 2 and 4 years old and beautiful children.

I do not believe in physical or verbal abuse, but the situation you described I feel was very appropriate. I feel that there should be limits. But I feel that the government goes way too far in their interpretation of physical punishment for children. Now many parents are scared to physically punish their child.

Why Do Some People Who Know Better Remain "In The Truth"?
by minimus inover the years, i would wonder why brother smarter than most would stay in a false religion.
i've spoken to many jws who have confided in me their doubts.
you would think, that they would be eager to get out, knowing what they know....but for some reason they stay and suck it up and continue the charade.. i can understand if a person decides to stay for family and because of not wanting to be shunned.....but how do they still, in good conscience, promote the "truth", when in fact they know it's all bullshit?.

You mentioned family. Some need the social network within the kh for support. Some may feel that the WTS is the lesser of two evils. Yes there are faults, but other religions do not offer anything more is their feeling.

Inactive, yet shunned!
by TimothyT inmy dad (49) (who was an elder for 10 year and hasnt been to the meetings now since april when i stopped going) sent a message to a younger unbaptised brother (19) in my congregation to see if they would like to get together and jam on their guitars.
the younger brother responded that he would like to but since my dad hasnt been to the meetings in a long time he feels its innapropriate.. needless to say my dad was a little pi**ed but at the same time he cant understand how he is also now being shunned despite the fact that he isnt even disfellowshipped.
why do these people show such conditional love when jesus taught the absolute opposite?.

Going to higher education is considered taboo to "strong, faithful" jws. Though you can't get df for it, you become "worldly bad association". Inactivity also brings up danger flags of association to the faithful jw.

I miss music
by White Dove inhas anyone else had music pretty much taken from them?
i'm doing the best i can with my djembe and old familiar songs that i can guess from hearing them, but i really miss the piano and listening to pretty music.
this is kind of a depressing spin-off from the musician thread.. got me to thinking.. oh, and i'm really angry about the false advertizing about cochlear implants.. they say they give a person music.

Sad to hear of your situation. I am starting to lose my hearing and not looking forward to missing the sound of music. I miss out on the chirping of birds and anything in the higher pitches.
