by JoelCW ini'm a long time lurker, first time poster.
i think i have a similar story to others who were brought up in the so called "truth" but after reading so many stories i thought i'd finally get around to writing mine:.
like i said, i was raised into it and almost my entire immediate family where (and for the most part still are) serious members.

The elders in my area stopped going to wedding receptions in fear that they possibly could share in any guilt from ones misbehaving.

I personally think that they did a good job on improving the web site. Other than the teachings, I think that the site is more visually appealing.

Religious extremism at its worst - the Taliban behead 17 people for having a party
by cedars ina truly shocking story in the telegraph.... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/9501478/taliban-behead-17-caught-dancing-to-music-at-party.html.
it makes you realise how fortunate you are to live in a rational society.. .

Sadly the Taliban and such groups survive by inflicting pain and death upon individuals. They want ones to "fear" them and not work against them.

26% drop in auxiliary pioneers in "special month" between 2011 and 2012
by sir82 ini don't recall seeing this posted on this board before, my apologies if the topic is duplicated..... in april 2011 and march 2012, the gb made a "loving provision" to allow jws to sign up for the auxiliary pioneer work with only a 30 hour requirement instead of the usual 50 hours.. in 2011, in the usa, about 500,000 signed up to be auxiliary pioneers.. in 2012, per the august 2012 km, only about 370,000 signed up.. that's a 26% drop in just 1 year!.
granted, in many parts of the us, the march weather is far worse than april's.
but on the other hand, there were 5 saturdays in march 2012 - you could get your "time in" with 5 long saturdays and nothing else.. .

The elders in the local congregations did not push aux pioneering 2011-2012 as they did in 2010-2011.

When You Were A Witness Did You Ever Celebrate A Birthday or Holidays?
by minimus ini knew some families that celebrated "family day" on christmas eve or some time around the holiday.. i don't know of too many witnesses that actually celebrated but kinda came close....haha.

Never celebrated a holiday unless I was at a relatives home and was tricked into it. This is not really a Thanksgiving gathering, but a family get-together.

JOB-Was He Used As A Gambling Pawn?
by PaintedToeNail inthe book of job describes a conversation between the devil and jehovah, as everyone knows.
however, satan knew jehovah intimately and would have been well aware of jehovah's ability of foreknowledge.
one would have to imagine that jehovah could have easily just told satan that job would in fact be faithful and therefore spared job the agony he went through, as he had insight because of his foreknowledge that the spirit creatures should have understood.. did jehovah and satan have a high-stakes game going?

I think that Job was screwed in this. How can getting double or more of your family members replace the ones you lost originally? Of course such feelings are felt more with women than men. Maybe that is why Job was being tested and not his wife.

Iran Bans Women From Getting Most University Degrees
by Diest inhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/9487761/anger-as-iran-bans-women-from-universities.html.
anger as iran bans women from universitiesfemale students in iran have been barred from more than 70 university degree courses in an officially-approved act of sex-discrimination which critics say is aimed at defeating the fight for equal women's rights.in a move that has prompted a demand for a un investigation by iran'smost celebrated human rights campaigner, the nobel laureate shirin ebadi, 36 universities have announced that 77 ba and bsc courses in the coming academic year will be "single gender" and effectively exclusive to men.. .
it follows years in which iranian women students have outperformed men, a trend at odds with the traditional male-dominated outlook of the country's religious leaders.

I believe that women are equal to men. Iran is practicing their religious biases. Sadly women are treated as second rate in most of the world. Even the WTS treats women that way, but says they don't.

Be Thankful You Weren't in this Underground Cult! Literally Under-Ground
by Diest inmoscow (reuters) - seventy members of an islamist sect who have been living in an underground bunker without heat or sunlight for nearly a decade have been discovered living on the outskirts of the city of kazan in russia, local media reported.. the sect members included 20 children, the youngest of whom had just turned 18 months.
many of them were born underground and had never seen daylight until the prosecutors discovered their dwelling on august 1 and sent them for health checks.. a 17-year-old girl turned out to be pregnant.. religion was suppressed in the soviet union which collapsed in 1991, prompting various cults and sects to flourish in the vacuum that opened up.. the group - known as the "fayzarahmanist" sect - was named after its 83-year-old organiser fayzrahman satarov, who declared himself a prophet and his house an independent islamic state, according to a report by state tv channel vesti.. satarov was described as a former deputy to a sunni islamic cleric in the 1970s.
his followers were encouraged to read his manuscripts and most were banned from leaving their eight-storey underground bunker which had been dug in the basement of a building, vesti said.. prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the sect and have said it will be disbanded if it continues its illegal activities, such as stopping its members from seeking medical assistance or education.. no arrests have been made although police are likely to look into suspicions that some of the children were being abused.

Very sad. Just shows the mind control a sect can have on its members.
