WT Society Makes JW's Feel Bad about Themselves - No Self Worth
by flipper ini have noticed this a lot in attitudes of witness relatives i've talked with over the last few years , as well as other former witness friends i have talked to.
many witnesses feel bad about themselves due to having it drilled into them that we are all " sinners " who allegedly inherited " sin and imperfection " from adam and eve .
that essentially humans are " born dead " or in a " dying " condition due to alleged " inherited sin " .

I agree. In the same vane, I always bristled at the idea that there are things that we humans were never meant or able to understand so we should just trust God (aka the Governeing Body). In particualr all the sciency questions. Find something that doesn't jibe with the Bible? Well we humans cant understand such things so we shouldn't trust secular sources on those matters. Because men are imperfect and let their selfish agendas get in the way of finding truth. Oh how right they are on that last bit. Hypocrites.
Goes right along with the "humanity is worthless scum" idea. Well... no we're not. Skrew you Watchtower.

The story of SD-7
by sd-7 inwho i am is inconsequential.
it's safe to say, however, that i am between a rock and a hard place.
or perhaps...a watchtower and a hard place, more accurately.. i was raised a jw--mom got baptized same day i turned 4 (in 1986), alleged that 'satan got to' me because i wanted to do fun stuff on my birthday rather than go to the convention to see her get baptized.

Welcome SD-7!!! Our stories are similar... I could relate to alot of the specifics you mentioned. I don't recommend staying in just to spy... at least I couldn't do it. I would probably end up throwing things at the stage during the meetings. That might be fun. But it would drive me insane. Just find the least damaging route to get out if you can, and move on with your life!
Good luck!!!

Why were you baptized?
by bluecanary ininspired by another thread.. i was baptized at 12 years old.
i had a cousin, two years older than me, who was prettier, more outgoing and more popular in the hall than i was.
i couldn't beat her at any of that stuff, but i figured i could be a better jw than she was.

Yeah, I'd like to reiterate the point if it wasn't clear enough in my other post.
I DIDNT EVEN KNOW HOW WOMEN GOT PREGNENT BUT I WAS EXPECTED TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH THE REST OF MY LIFE.
Git'em while they're young and stupid and you can wreck their lives forever.

So ... Does the Devil Exist?
by The Berean inwith mankind's continuing quest for a source or higher power these seemingly taboo questions may be raised: .
could a higher source of evil also exist.
can there be good without bad?is there such an influence in society either real or imagined?is wickedness contained within some individuals and not others?would such a sinister force take pleasure in woe experienced by humansor, is the devil a fabricated excuse used to avoid responsibilty for bad choices and character defects?comments ....

I was 12. TWELVE! I still remember the date: December 19, 1992.
Of course I believed it was the truth. I wanted to make my parents happy, be seen as 'mature' so I could pass the mics and sit in the back and play with the sound equipment. The lifetime commitment didn't scare me. After all, why would I ever leave The TRUTH TM ??? Of course I wasn't allowed to have full knowledge of what I was getting into. But mainly... (this is stupid I know, but hey I was 12) there was this girl in my hall that annoyed the hell out of me, and I wanted to make sure I got baptized before her. Stupid stupid stupid...
So somewhere in this pubescent 12-year-olds mind, where at the time my deepest thoughts were about the X-Men, ninjas, and where do babies come from, SOMEWHERE in amongst all of those weighty issues so typical of an average 12-year-old male I, under pressure from my parents and the society, decided that I was READY to make a weighty decision that could have life-altering consequences.
My decision making process went something like this...
"Hmmm, could Wolverine really beat Juggernaut by himself??? I suppose it would depend on what material Juggernaut's suit is made out of. Jeez, what if Wolverine had to fight Magneto by himself??? He'd be powerless... This greatly concerns me. I should get baptized."
Based on the result of that deep meditation, my parents and life long friends now shun me.

Another WTF moment...............
by Vachi 8 He Is inwell a few actually......so i'm sitting in the we'redumb hall today, and the core of the topic is recognizing gods qualities through jesus actions and also how jesus spent eons of time with god learning what his father does.
i gotta question: what purpose does that serve?
is god preparing jesus to do something that he himself is tired of or is no longer able to do?

I know that ST:TNG episode too!!! (...as I adjust my pocket-protector) Hell, Vachi... I even know where your user icon is from, very well. Inuyasha... Great show.
But yeah you make some good points there. I always wondered how God could be ok with Solomon having hundreds of wives, basically having sex with any woman he wants, yet WE lose God's favor if we masterbate. Double standard much?

Do you have GOSSIPERS and those with STRONG PERSONALITIES that "control" the congregation?
by BonaFide ini bet a lot of others have, and its strange how so many are powerless to do anything.. one sister i know was married to another jw.
he was unfaithful, she was crushed, he wasn't disfellowshipped, she forgave him, he was cruel, finally she committed adultery to get out of it.
they divorced.

IS THIS WATCHTOWER PARAGRAPH GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT?
by badboy inwt march 1 2009 page 3. the ancient babylonians, for example, believed that human affairs are influenced by the stars and their movements.. should `are' be `were'?.
.

No I think that's correct. Can't give you a "technical" explanation why, but it's got to do with the fact that human affairs are ongoing, then and now.
Yeah, they very very rarely make mistakes. I remeber I found a legitimate one when I was a teenager and my mom tried to argue with me but I looked it up and i was right, and then my mom got mad at me for pointing it out. I wasn't "doubting" what they wrote, and she still got mad at me. Rrrrgh.

"God's morality is higher than yours" as an illegitimate argument
by gubberningbody inthis sort of thing is often posited by religionists and yet it's really just a postulate with no foundation.. who is god?.
"he's smarter, stronger and able to leap tall buildings by just moving them about with his mind.".
none of that argues for moral superiority.. if god's were higher than mine in any given instance in order for anyone to know it he or she would have to establish a standard for judgment and then make a comparison.

I should say BTS... I love your posts and don't want you think me an asshole. Although I do enjoy discussing this kind of thing. (Not arguing!)
God could also choose to manifest himself in an intelligible manner.
Yes but you said previously that, "It is simply not possible for us to know how an omnipotent omniscient omnibenevolent God would act." You seem to want to have both ways. Which goes along with a point that I made earlier that God could choose to act in a manner that would leave no doubt as to his righteousness. Yet he chose to do things that no moral person would ever do, and then leave them unexplained as to why he chose to do them that way! We are left to simply rationalize that God's ways are supposed to be higher than ours. So my question is, why does God not choose to act in a manner that we can morally relate to? Why all the cruelty towards women and the killing of babies and the like?
If it were so, we would be no more than automata. Besides, we could argue that the very rules and logic that bind us on this level are despotic, yet these things are the very substrate of our physical selves. It is within God that we exist and have our being.
I don't see the necessity for us to be automata if God were a cruel dictator. We could call the physical laws despotic, but it's a useless description, as the physical laws simply are what they are. It's like saying gravity is cruel because it prevents us from flying. And the rest of that seems an unprovable assertion.
Certainly, I do not recommend limiting my discussion to a depiction of God in the OT written from a certain point of view.
I can understand why. It would be unfair to a certain extent... but the fact is those things in the OT don't fit into the Christian concept of "God's Love" and hence the need to rationalize or ignore them.
"Humans cannot rightly judge God"
In an absolute sense you are correct, we can't rightly judge anything. But your logic appears to rest on the assumption that a being posessing those qualities is even possible. It would be like saying "I could tell you the color of that invisible unicorn if only I could see it." Prove there's a unicorn first, and then we'll discuss it's attributes.
We are not God's peers.
Yes, but as mentioned, and as you've admitted, God could choose to manifest and behave in a way that is completely understandable to us. Certainly that would not be outside the realm of his power.
gubberningbody - Yes I was giving an opinion on what might be more logically coherent for a believer to say when the assertion is made that "We cannot (as in, 'have no right to') judge God". But the statement "We cannot (as in, 'do not have the ability') to judge God" is problematic as well, as it is based on several assumptions. Excellent points made.
