Russia get the World Cup? WTF?

so russia get the 2018 soccer world cup, and qatar get the 2022 world cup.

it's a real shame that they gave it to such crap venues.

Nah, nothing wrong with these choices. Its nice they are spreading it around. The Middle East loves soccer as much as the rest of the world so they deserve to have one and I guess Qatar is about the best, least controversial place they could have it. Isn't that country extremely rich? I suppose they could have had it at U.A.B. which would be even better.

And Al Qaeda would never, ever, ever go near a World Cup event, even if it was in America. The World Cup is the most popular thing in the world. Everyone would turn against them. Even Muslims love soccer. Thats like one step down from attacking Mohammed.

And whats wrong with Russia? I'd love to go to Russia?

Not true, there was just a college student who was outed as being gay over the Internet and his last correspondence with this world was a Facebook status message:

"jumping off the GW Bridge, sorry..."

(think about that :( anyway, there's no way people are going to track this guy down via IP addresses. even if it was a static IP instead of a dynamic IP which could be used by thousands of people, it would take a lot of people working together quickly to match that to an address. I think we just have to hope that this poster comes around to his/her senses during the night)

Nobody wants to live in paradise

i've got some probably-not-so-original musings about why nobody would actually want to "live forever on a paradise earth.

" these are the sorts of things that probably make every jw kid (or adult) have some doubts, because the problems are so obvious.

the standard jw answer of "it doesn't say in the bible what will happen, we'll see when we get there" or "wait for the new scrolls to be opened" are totally inadequate because the problems involve the very concept of eternal life in paradise.

Not that I believe in paradise but I believe some of your points are misconceived.

JW Perfection does not mean "Not making mistakes" but "Not having sin". So you can still stutter or miss basketball shots or take years to learn to play piano. But you're not going to crave enjoyment from things that are sinful, like violence and screwing your wife's best friend, or stealing, etc. That DOES get linked to a kind of physical perfection (i.e., not sickness, death, reading glasses, etc). Why? That is because man originally didn't have those things in his perfect state and only DID have them BECAUSE OF sin. Thats a strange linkage, I know. You still have pain receptors though, so you can still stub your toe and break your arm (?) but you wouldn't have the endemic physical problems.

So some of your problems I dont really see being as inconsistent with JW doctrine (although they are absurd).

Also the problems with boredom I dont think are very severe. Would you trade another 20 years of good health if it meant being stuck in your job but able to liveon with your family? I am sure you would. Just because a portion of your productive life is mundane, it doesn't make the rest of the life around you less (potentially) magical.

The children/sex is a problem. There are just so many other obvious problems that are much more physical in nature though I think.

If the world is to have religion, we need a lot more people like Coyne. He does a great job explaining things, although he stumbles a bit towards the end maybe in what I would like to think makes sense. Take a gander; tell me what you think. okay so when i was talking with the brothers, somehow they got me to agree to come up with a list of jw teachings i don't agree with.

You can play this game and survive if you do it carefully (I dont know if you even want to but it can be done).

I.e., before and after your doubts include things such as:

** These are things I have been struggling with and I'm willing to continue to pray and research on these matters

** I know in the past that God's will and/or organization has needed to be clarified such as when the apostles did not understand jesus' statements about drinking his blood or misunderstood when jesus would return; or when the early JW's needed to have most of their practices refined and changed. Its not like I'm going to run off to another religion here, but there are some things that don't make sense and I too am willing to wait to see if they can get properly corrected, but I don't want to endorse things through comments/preaching/talks while I am waiting and researching.

Misery, that Giants-Eagles game was awesome, true. Just food for thought. Being a JW, we've been trained and drilled into believing violence=bad & boxing=violence. But ask yourself, is watching a night of MMA with three 1-9 minute fights between two trained professionals any more violent than a pro football game? Some of those hits last night were VICIOUS! But both sports are not wanton violence. They are calculated acts of athletes that get paid millions to voluntarily practice their craft. Also, JW's will never officially come down on hockey, but they have bare-fisted fighting as well. These minor pharasaical application of the general principle of "not being violent" is just crazy in my mind. Ok, just my thought for the day... hope that Hobbs kid is alright.

Just analyze some of the things you're saying to yourself. You're filled with guilt over all these things that you are doing on your wasted weekend. Guilty over watching MMA because Jehovah hates violence? The god that made the T-Rex, bacteria, vultures, lions, etc? The god that made a universe filled with colliding galaxies, supernova, pulsars, etc? The god that required the mass killing of animals as sacrifices because he liked the smell? The god that wiped out millions upon millions of people in wars, pillaging, diseases, floods, celestials firestorms. The god that promises that armagheddon and armagheddon II will happen in a few years and then 1000 years after that? And YOU feel guilty for watching an MMA match? I hope that your mind can break free misery.

And how is that? Most condemnations are about the same. The WT's are particularly egregious because they condemn things that they are guilty of doing. I've never claimed to speak for god or have his spirit, so it is hardly the same. I think anyone speaking for God and sounding exactly like what any imperfect man would try to say deserves to be called out.

Well, no one has read the book since it comes out later this week. I am responding to actual quotes of the Pope which seem very clear in their meaning. If it was somehow manipulated to be out of context, I'll take it back, but the quotes seem pretty clear.

Its not anti-catholic to say what the Pope is saying is ridiculous. I have no quarrel with Catholics. The mantra of "do whatever the *&!$ you want, just don't let it get back to us" seems like a nice way to go.

1. The Pope is reported as saying “NO CONDOMS WHATSOEVER.” The people say: “BOO!”

2. The Pope is reported as saying “CONDOMS IN SOME SITUATIONS.” The people say: “BOO!”

You are missing my point. The situation he used is regarding prostitutes. Thats like the GB being asked, "When is it advised to go to college" and them answering "if you're going to become a politician." That just doesn't make sense. A Catholic shouldn't be a prostitute so why cause confusion and use that as an example.

Also, it’s never been proven that the anti-Catholic stories about the papal figure that is under consideration for canonization was an anti-Semite. Though he did not make any formal pronouncements against Hitler, he did hide many Jews within the Vatican state and, reportedly, within the Vatican itself. He didn’t show vocal support either for Hitler. Could it be he was being silent to avoid drawing attention to the fact that he was hiding so many Jewish people to save them from death in the concentration camps? It might not matter to you, but it matters to those people and their children and grandchildren who are glad he did. Would you feel the same way about him if you were one of those children whose parents or grandparents had been thus hidden by this pope?

Then THAT paragraph should be the response, not "yeah if we had known about all these accusations we wouldn't have included him in this... its not like we know how to use the internet". If God is directing your actions and you believe they are right, then STICK BY THEM.

But to put it the way you do, I agree with you that it does sound horrible. But is it just a way you are reporting it and am I sugar coating it the way I am mentioning it?

I dont think his decision is horrible at all actually, even if it is exactly as I reported it. I may agree, I may disagree. My point is, its NOT the way that God's agent should ever be expected to give the answers. Its like when the WT is asked a Bible question and they use the word "evidently, probably, may, evidently, perhaps" 10x in 4 paragraphs. If you're god's agent then cut the crap and stick by your guns. Otherwise say "I have no idea what God would say, but here's my guess".

* How can you say condoms are ok in the case of prostitutes. Does that make any sense? Don't they condemn prostitutes? WHy not just say they're morally wrong for Catholics since a Catholic shouldn't be a friggin prostitute!
