Birthday V Anniversary -I don't send JW family an Anniversary card
by artemis.design inwhen i was growing up in a jw family, i always resented the fact that i had to save up my hard earned pocket money to buy my parents a wedding anniversary gifts, when we, as kids, never, ever had a special day.
i don't mean the usual, not celebrating birthdays or christmas, but we had no special day at all.
we didn't lack for toys, but that idea of looking forward to a certain day and have a wrapped gift, is something i don't ever remember experiencing as a kid/teenager.. forward fast to 16 and leaving home, i decided i didn't want to celebrate anniversaries.

Some of my JW friends as kids used to get wrapped gifts on their parents anniversaries, or other special days like assembly days. But I honestly can't ever remember getting a wrapped gift. We weren't materially deprived- we used to get toys , but t would be like, we are in the supermarket, and we could all choose a toy. My hubby has a whole cupboard full of nick-nacks from his childhood, but I do not have a single item of sentimentality, nothing I can say "Dad bought me that".
I don't think it is out of retaliation, but I absolutely can't bring myself to send and anniversary card.

Forward fast to 16 and leaving home, I decided I didn't want to celebrate Anniversaries. My parents weren't that bothered. It was never even mentioned. But now myself and my siblings are all Wed, they see it as a snub that I don't send them gifts and cards on their Anniversary. It isn't, I just see it as a special day between a husband and wife, I just don't celebrate other peoples. They just can't get it.
Having just read the other recent post regarding birthday's, this has just reminded me how difficult it is to make sence of their rules, Anniversaries - ok, birthdays - not ok. No don't think so! Arte :)

When Did You Stop Saying Amen
by BroMac infor prayers from the platform.. i've "said my own" for a few years now if i find i cant agree with what the brother is praying about.
i'm constantly amazed by the same old repetitive ramblings and just nonsense that some brothers feel is an acceptable way to pray for a congregation.. once i've finished saying my own i'll listen again to what they are going on about, and round and round they go.
the worse ones are those who can hardly speak english and i cant understand a word thats said apart from the "...feffull slive... bless bruders sis not here..." blah blah.. and everyone has gone through the public talk prayer.

I was never "in", but I played along even as a young teen, going so far as to answer up at meetings and even going door to door. I knew I would never truly in, and of all the playing along, I found saying Amen the end of the prayer the hardest. Arte :)

Zen Living part 23 (summarized): Loving Kindness: What the World Needs Now
by JimmyPage inlove really is the answer.
zen living reveals that loving kindness, compassion, and the desire to relieve the suffering of others emerge naturally from a zen practice.. as the world experiences struggle, conflict, and pain, zen living can teach those who practice it how to release fear, hate, and the delusion of difference.. loving kindness can heal emotional, political, social, and spiritual separation.. we can help spread strength, power, and unity through loving kindness by practicing mindfulness every day.. .

I'm all for Zen, but the philosophy of Buddism and the reality of it as a practising religion are 2 different things.

PART 2 - PESTILENCE - How The Watchtower Distorts Facts and Builds Fear

Absolutely spot on. They now predict the younger generation to have a life expectancy way into the 90's. Even in countries like Africa, although life can be grim in some parts, mostly due to being war ravaged, the vaccines are available to cure most diseases.
WT apply this to all the "signs of the end of the conclusion of the system of things". The one that gets me is "earth quakes in one place after another". But there is no indication that there has been an increase in sizemic activity since 1914 (If that’s the date they still go on).
Also studying history, one realises this is probably the most peaceful period of time in human existence. But then maybe that is another sign when we cry "peace and security". So its end times when there is war, and end times when it is peace?

Just to give you guys outside the UK an idea of how big these National newspapers are, here are a couple of wikipedia descriptions:
The Independent is a British national morning newspaper published in London by Independent Print Limited, owned by Alexander Lebedev since 2010. [ 2 ] It is nicknamed the Indy, while the Sunday edition, The Independent on Sunday, is the Sindy. Launched in 1986, it is one of the youngest UK national daily newspapers. The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards.
Originally a broadsheet newspaper, since 2003 it has been published in a tabloid (or self-described 'compact') format. [ 3 ] The Independent is regarded as leaning to the left politically, [ 4 ] however tends to take a classical liberal, pro-market, stance on economic issues, [ 5 ] making it difficult to place it on the oft-used left/right spectrum. Furthermore, it generally has not affiliated itself to any political party, and has a range of views given on its editorial and comment pages. The newspaper describes itself as "free from party political bias, free from proprietorial influence" – a banner it carries on the front page of its daily edition.
In July 2011 it had an average daily circulation of 182,881, and was the only national daily newspaper in Britain to have increased its circulation over the previous 12 months. During the same period the Sunday edition had a slightly lower circulation, at 167,247

The Daily Telegraph is a daily morning broadsheet newspaper distributed throughout the United Kingdom and internationally. The newspaper was founded by Arthur B. Sleigh in June 1855 as the Daily Telegraph and Courier, and is since 2004 owned by David and Frederick Barclay.
According to a MORI survey conducted in 2005, 64% of Telegraph readers intended to support the Conservative Party in the coming elections. [ 3 ] It had an average daily circulation of 634,113 in July 2011
Thats a total circulation of nearly 1 million!!! Wow well done Cedars!!!

JW charity status within the UK, has anyone ever petitioned the charity commission (following on a comment re Diseased mind/ Independent article)
by artemis.design ini am not a regular poster, but i like to read discussions.
i'm picking up a comment in the other post regarding the millions jw organisation claims from tax payer in gift aid, and the recent independent article saying that a complaint has been submitted to the charity commission.. in times of austerity, the government is searching every corner in order to find cut backs.
it seems an appropriate time to petition local mps to remove charity status from non-deserving organisations.. i am a very laze ex-jw, and rarely get worked up about anything, but this opportunity seems too good to miss.

I am a very laze ex-JW, and rarely get worked up about anything, but this opportunity seems too good to miss. The problem is I am not sure how to go about it. It would also be an idea to write to the charity commission, but again, I don't feel confident in articulating the point.
Finally is there any way to get copies of this WT article (hard print).
Any advise would be appreciated. Regards, Arte :)
