  could someone please point me in the direction of some threads disproving the chronology for the 1914 date?

  Thanks, dgp. To be frank, this means absolutely nothing to me. I could not care any less. But it does to both of my brothers involved in this discussion, perhaps only because they like debating so much. One with an interest in getting my JW brother out, my youngest because he is pretty sure he can prove to him some of the lies he has been taught.

  Since I'm the one with an account on JWN, I'm trying to steer him towards the "ammunition."

  Thanks for the information on the book, hopefully he can find it in the library.

  Thanks, my youngest brother is now in contact with my second oldest brother (there are 5 brothers and 2 sisters in my immediate family). This particular brother is a JW, but he also loves to argue, and can, occasionally be challenged to actually use his brain. So I'm hopeful this will be put to good use to get him out.

  I'm sending him the link to this thread so that he can look at it directly. I had thought there was a "best of" thread for this topic but couldn't find it.

  yes, what was the biggest lie that you can think of, that persuaded you to realize that they were not who they said they were ?.

  for myself it would have to be the year they picked as the destruction of ancient jerusalem 607 bc.. i have an assumption this was done purposely to coincide correctly with making 1914 an a important pivotal date.

  in human history, which by all factual evidence it was not.. unassuming and deceiving manipulation for self marketing purposes.

  since leaving i've started reading my horescope when ever i happen to see one, i don't belive it, i just do it because it was somthing i was always taught as bad and now i am free to do .

  I think they are a tool, not absolute. Not prophetic, but they can help you understand humans a bit better. I certainly would not believe anything as absolute.

  I guess the best reason I believe in the stars is that I can see them out there, they must exist.

  Please help re:objections to Thanksgiving?

  what are the standard jw objections to thanksgiving?

  do they claim there is any kind of a scriptural basis for condemning it?

  i plan on asking someone about this and i'm curious what types of reasoning they might try to throw at me.

  Good grief it has been SO long since I had to deal with this, it had actually slipped my mind. This one never made sense to me either. In my family we did the Friday thing too, but we did one other thing that was technically allowed. We celebrated my parents wedding anniversary, which was Dec 31st, just like Christmas minus the decorations. We'd have a big dinner and exchange gifts. My parents loved it because they got all the after Christmas sales. We never advertised it, probably because no one wanted to have them put a stop to it.

  My first "real" Thanksgiving...

  do you remember as a jw those pseudo-thanksgiving dinners we used to have?

  you know the ones, where we ate turkey, dressing, and all the rest....but we did it on friday so we woudn't be celebrating thanksgiving like the "world"?

  the excuse was that everyone in the family was off, the turkey was on sale, blah blah... well this year will be my first real thanksgiving dinner.
