Democrats WANT Babies to Die
by AwSnap inhahahahaha!....i heard this from a jw today!
they said, "i don't know which is which, but one of them is more conservative (i said 'i think that's republicans) and tend to do things more along the lines of the bible.
and then the other party (democrats) is kind of wild and pushes for abortions and gay marriage.

Stumbling Your Fellow Brothers
by dig692 ini just felt the need to express my thoughts on the matter of "stumbling others" in the congregation.
they tell you that you are accountable for your own soul and responsible for your own spirituality, and then they tell you that you can't do something if its going to stumble your brother.. if a brother/sister sees me doing something not condemned in the bible but maybe is a matter of conscience and he/she is stumbled...why is that my fault?
what makes me accountable for that?

The whole "stumbling" thing has never been anything other than a mechanism for imposing on someone else's conscience.

Swedish government declines to give JW financial support
by InquiryMan inquite recently, watchtower in sweden applied for governmental financial support, as they are entitled to as a registered religious community.
however, the government declined to accept the application, stating that the reason was that the jws do not adhere to democratic values and standards and do not support mainstream values.. the witnesses are upset, because they feel discriminated against.
they state that the financial issue is not the real issue, but to be treated in a similar way as other religious communities.. they have appealed the decision and plan to send a report explaining the witnesses views in more detail.. the branch office chose the religious, pentecostal (assembly of god) newspaper "dagen" to make an interview.. here is the photo report of the article.. .

If the Swedish government can allocate funds to Muslims to support their fine works of cutting people's heads off and blowing up buildings then I think returning a small percentage of Witness's tax dollars to the organization is probably OK.

Which is your favourite single malt Scotch Whisky, and why?
by lifelong humanist inas a true scot, i'm deeply passionate about most things scottish, any possibly one of our small nation's most successful export is my main favourite - our single malt whisky heritage.. i'm writing this while savouring a 12 year old highland park - distilled in the orkney islands, the most northerly distillery in scotland.
it is one of my favourites - it was my late father's favourite tipple.
yet, only 500m from my house is scotlands oldest legal whisky distillery - glenturret, in crieff.

The Macallan 18 year old is my favorite Scotch. I like the smokiness and the hint of orange.

I suspect there may be stress related issues with mental illness among Jehovah's Witnesses. However, Jerry Bergman is a poor source to look to for support of that contention. This is a guy that couldn't get tenure at Bowling Green because of shoddy work, the Universities decision was upheld in court when he sued. This is a guy that got kicked out of his lucrative "expert witness" gig when courts found out that he was simply not credible. This is a guy whose writings have been severely criticized by academics for methodology and sourcing. Just because he supports what you want to believe doesn't make him a good source. If you want to prove this point, and I'd really like to see some serious work on it, then don't depend on Bergman, he's a joke.

Has President Obama Disappointed You?
by minimus inis he what you expected?
any second thoughts?
?.

Nope, I expected massive corruption, serial lying, unprecedented secrecy, disastrous foreign policy, betrayal of allies, pandering to enemies, monumental historical ignorance, destruction of the economy and a constant chorus of "I". He has delivered on all counts.

What's the difference between a Muslim Suicide bomber and a Jehovah's Witness?
by Witness 007 ini would say just the bomb!.
one case involved a teenage muslim girl with burn scars on her face....her bomb failed to detonate so she clawed at her face in frustration...she was hoping to end her pain by going to "paradise" to be perfect.
witnesses claim if the die due to lack of blood or due to nuetrality it's okay!

At a very young age it suddenly dawned on me that it was very strange that a "spirit directed" organization had so many truly ignorant or nasty dispositioned people in positions of authority.

Gardening in Houston
by jeanniebeanz indoes anyone else garden along the gulf coast?
i used to be able to grow just about anything in northern cali, but since moving to houston, i have a devil of a time with my garden and flower beds.
they seem to be plagued with everything from insects to fungus and the amount of chemical solutions that the garden centers here recommend would poison the entire planet to the nth generation.

Houston can be challenging for gardeners that move to the area but the truth is that if you work with it you can grow something pretty much all year round. You just have to select the right plants for the area. The other truth is that quite often the soil in the area is not very good.
If I were to make one recommendation for successful gardening (vegetable gardening) it would be to used raised beds. Makes all the difference in the world.
A very good source for information specific to Houston is an organization called Urban Harvest www.urbanharvest.org which not only has excellent advise on their web site but also offers all kinds of classes at quite reasonable rates. The guy that used to be in charge of Urban Harvest, Bob Randall, has written an extremely good book called Year Round Fruit, Vebetables and Flowers for Metro Houston which has everything you need to know.
You have to remember that going from the north side of town to the south side of town can take you from 8A to at least 9 on the temperature scale, Interstate 10 is kind of a dividing line for both temperatue and soil.
Houston is very good for fall/winter gardens so you have an opportunity right now to get started with that. Brocoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, etc. all grow very well in Houston during the cooler months. It's a little late to start fall tomatoes but you might give them a try. Later in the year would be a good time to plant citrus trees which do very well in Houston.
A couple of useful places for supplies, in addition to Buchanan's, are Southwest Fertilizer and Wabash Feed and Antiquities.
