From what I've seen most of the current crop of Witnesses seem to be simply incapable of engaging in an actual discussion. Then there's the fact that for quite a few years now many that did try to "Reason" with people ended up with their rear end in a satchel because people are now much more familiar with what they're going to say and what is wrong with it. Consequently, "Reasoning" with people has gone out of fashion.

What is the inside info on "Reasoning From the Scriptures?"
by stillin ini understand why the witnesses won't actually "reason" from the scriptures; because they will have to come to grips with the fact that others have their own reasons, scripture-based, for believing differently than the jw's.. the "reasoning" book was supposed to arm the r&f with solid scriptural backing that could withstand most in-depth conversations.
so, why is it gathering dust now?
was there some doctrinal issue specifically?.

Fifty years ago today: One quote to demolish the Watchtower
by JeffT ini did not have any connection to jw's when they published this, about two weeks before i graduated from high school.
i'm now on medicare and collecting social security.
so much for their ability to see into the future.

Thanks for posting this. It was nauseating when I read it then and it's still nauseating now. I'd like to take a whip to whoever actually wrote it. It's enough to make me wish I believed in a burning Hell because the jackasses that have led the Organization for over a hundred years definitely deserve eternal torment.

I really didn't change at all. To be honest I simply always refused to abide by any Witness rules that I considered inappropriate, I didn't make a big deal about it or go around kicking people in the shins but I just lived my own life.

Were You A Gullible JW?
by minimus ini think every congregation has their group that sees everything as a sign that they are god’s chosen people.
if a witness didn’t go to a meeting and a storm came and destroyed their house and killed them, and only the kingdom hall was saved, that was a sign that we should be in jehovah’s house.
if russia persecuted jws , it’s proof we are living in the last days.

Nope, I was always very cynical. The feet of clay were obvious to me from the beginning and I absolutely never bought into any of the anecdotes about God dipping his hand in to people's lives.

Do any of you born into the cult feel like your mental growth was stunted?
by rockemsockem inbeing born in to me was devastating.
when you are a child born in and raised with the they vs us and they are evil and worldly and going to die.
not allowed to form relationships with anyone not one of you.

My mental growth has always been just fine. You have to accept personal responsibility for you life and there will always be obstacles to overcome no matter what. Being born in is just another obstacle.

Do You For The Most Part Trust The News Media?
by minimus inthe media is very powerful.
many news people just want to get a scoop even if their breaking story isn’t checked out for accuracy.
some journalists are precise and double check whatever they are reporting.

I do not trust them. I've had some dealings with the media and they tend to be ignorant, dishonest and agenda driven. You have to watch them like a hawk when you talk to them and listen very, very carefully when they say, "so what you meant was" because invariably it wasn't what you meant at all and you have to very blunt in saying so. I can also say that whenever the media has spoken about something where I have more than general knowledge they've been wrong about 80% of the time.

The Dominican has always been a sewer. I've traveled widely but have always had zero interest in going there, Haiti next door is worse.

Do You Think Disfellowshipping Is The Worst Thing About Jehovah’s Witnesses?
by minimus inthe longer i’m out the more i feel that disfellowshipping is cruel.
i understand the organization tells parents to not even accept emails or texts from their disfellowshipped children.
while i was a witness they tried to discourage families from association but there was some leeway if it was considered necessary business to interact.

The worst think about Jehovah's Witnesses is convincing people they and every aspect of their lives are absolutely subject to the whims of a bunch of arrogant, insular, frightened, mean spirited and not very bright old men.

Frederick Franz, "Bible Scholar"
by Quendi inas some of you know by now, i spent sunday, 7 august, renewing ties with a dear friend.
we're both disfellowshipped, the difference between us being he is seeking reinstatement and i am not.
we got into some very spirited discussions on different bible topics and one of them was the value of the new world translation itself.

Been looking at translation quite a bit lately and read multiple books on the subject as well as speaking with a few people that actually can read Greek and Hebrew. While I would say that the NWT is not a horrible translation they took absolutely unjustified liberties in inserting the Name in the Greek Scriptures. You can maybe justify doing it in quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures but nowhere else. They also clearly let doctrine bias their wording in quite a few cases though that is almost a constant with translation because often there are several possibilities and you simply have to select one. I would also say that real 'translation' is very difficult indeed and requires expertise that I do not believe they possessed or posses to this day. So it's really a kind of cobbled together version rather than an actual translation and I believe they were completely dishonest in their descriptions of how it was produced. All that stuff about how great 'leteral' translation is must be considered complete BS because all translation is interpretation. I recommend the NASB, ESV and my favorite is the HCSB. Occasionally I use the Jerusalem Bible or PHillips.
