Can the average or even long-time jw explain 607 to 1914 let alone how to prove 29 c.e. was the right year. I know, 40 years around jws that stumbled and “believed” without “understanding.”
And they bet their life and the lives of the children on that ignorance.
This ^ is one of the most profoundly moving things I've read in a long time. Thank you, Blondie. That gets to the crux of it. My parents could never explain the "chronology" - they referred to it as one of the "deep things" that was "beyond" them. And yet they believed what others told them, eventually sacrificing their entire family.

Is there a correlation between personality type and leaving the WT?...
by Tuesday inon facebook tonight there was a post asking to take a personality test, in posting the personality tests a trend started emerging that certain personality types seem to leave around the same time.. i came out as an intj which is introverted intuitive thinking judging.
which a good paragraph describing it was:.
intjs apply (often ruthlessly) the criterion "does it work?

Age You Left: 17
Type: ENFJ
Brief Reason why you left: Became unable to handle the cognitive dissonance in early teen years; 1975 did it (when they started telling me that they'd never predicted Armageddon and I had sat through meetings where they did, that was the end of it).

Advice needed about my study with a JW.
by Resistance is Futile ini've never been a jw, and i'm having a difficult time trying to understand the perspective of a born-in jw.
i want to ask questions that will cause this family member to began to think outside the box, but i don't want to trip off any apostate alarms and have him put his guard up.
i also don't want to waste time and energy asking questions that he can easily brush off and give the prepackaged watchtower answer without having to really think.

Only good thing about the JWs: They're not going to spring Xenu and aliens in volcanoes on you.

Do they still have Unassigned Territory?
by journey-on inwhen i was a kid, going in "unassigned territory" was a big adventure.
we packed picnic lunches, loaded up the cooler with water and drinks, and of course, a trunk load of extra literature.
it was an all day affair and we really felt like we were doing something special for jehovah....going where there was no kingdom hall nearby and putting the message out there!.

Stephanie Powell Watts, a former JW who is now an English professor at Lehigh University, wrote a short story called "Unassigned Territory."
It's in the anthology NEW STORIES FROM THE SOUTH: THE YEAR'S BEST, 2007, edited by Edward P. Jones. Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/New-Stories-South-Years-Best/dp/1565125568/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1304701238&sr=1-8

The "WOW!!" moment...Theocratic Ministry School was a sham!
by Terry ini just remembered something from long ago..... i moved to california in 1974 after i had been in "the truth" for 11 years, having full-time pioneered and also having served time in federal prison over the so-called christian neutrality issue.. i felt completely confident that my bible education was the best on planet earth.
i had honed my skills by door to door preaching, discussion, arguments and attendance at the theocratic ministry school.. i began working as an artist in a huge company that manufactured all kinds of art, sculpture and wall hanging.
the head of the artists was a wonderful young man, skilled artist and devout christian who took me under his wing.

This says it all:
"I learned more about the Bible in the first three classes, than in years of going to meetiings!"
This is precisely why all students should take a comparative religions course. There's nothing like an unbiased, fact-based view of religion to shatter dogma and clarify thinking. Once students have learned to recognize similarities and differences between the religions, they're in much better shape to make their own decisions about what they believe---or don't.
And that's precisely why JWs won't take those courses.
