  kh meetings were utter hell.

  the boredom, particularly for a child, was awful.

  i feel it was a form of child abuse.

  Time demands of the Jehovah's Witness religion compared with other religions?

  i've been wondering how other religions, such as other christian denominations, would compare to the jw's in their time demands.. .

  i'll lay out the approximate hours per week below.

  (i know some of the meeting lengths have changed in recent years, and the bookstudy has been abolished.

  Don't forget about conventions and aasemblies!

  When making this comparison, don't forget that all the WT hours are mandatory--you are expected to be at every meeting, to do field servcie every month, and attend all the assemblies and conventions. For most other religions, activities beyond the Sunday/Sabbath services are optional. You are encouraged to join the mision trips, charity groups, teach Sunday School or catechism classes, sing in the choir, lead a scout troop, etc. but nobody is "marked" because they don't (and, as in most normal organizations, it seems that about 20% of the people are doing 80% of these tasks).

  Went to G'daughter's Honors Day

  she is a rising 8th grader, and excelled in language arts, geography, and three sports - volleyball, basketball, and softball.. i told her that next year i want her to excel in everything, especially science and math - as she did in elementary school.. every time i visit that school, i can feel the aura of the ancestors who labored so tirelessly to see that everyone had access to an education.. i tip my hat to them.. syl.

  mothers day can bring up many issues for some of us.

  for some their mothers have passed away and the opportunity to say i love you in person is forever lost.

  for others our mothers are lost to the borg.

  How evangelicals and Witnesses are alike

  both believe in the inerrancy of the bible (psalms 12:6, 119:89, proverbs 30:5-6, 2 timothy 3:16-17, 2 peter 1:20-21, rev 22:18-19) and in their absolute correct interpretation.both believe that the other is apostate (2 thessalonians 2:3-4).both believe that the others doctrine is influenced by the devil (genesis 3:1-15, john 8:44).both believe the other is condemned for their false beliefs (2 peter 2:1-3, 1 timothy 4:1-3, 2 timothy 2:16-19, hebrews 6:4-8).neither would darken the door of the others sanctuary, for fear of contamination.both would avoid casual association (proverbs 13:20, 1 corinthians 5:11, 15:33), and certainly would not marry the other (2 corinthians 6:14).both believe that armageddon is imminent and look forward to the purified world afterwards.both consider that the highest form of charity is to convert another.

  practical works like feeding the poor are considered inferior.more?

  To an evangelical/pentecostal, it would come across as depressingly sterile.

  To me as a non-practicing Catholic (at the time), it came across as depressingly sterile and boring. I think it's safe to say that most people, of any religious persuasion, would find it depressingly sterile. There is no worship as such. The songs (don't call them hymns!) are trite ans self-serving. The talks are like the slacker in a high school speech class: somebody going through the motions and following the required format, because they have to. No fire, no soul, just words following an outline and filling the allotted time.

  All I see is skin that is too fair, features that are too European, and hair and beard that are too well groomed. But they'd still put him on reproof for coming to the Kingdom Hall looking like that--where's your coat and tie, go see a barber, and there's no way you're coming in here wearing those sandals, sir!

  "Inspirational" stories without religion?

  recently saw the movie soul surfer with my family.

  nice film for all ages.

  inspirational.. but it got me thinking about the question in the topic header.

  I can think of some anti-religious stories that might be considered inspirational to some degree ... One could possibly argue "The Lord of the Rings" but I'm not sure even Tolkien would agree.

  You're right, he didn't agree. Religion as such wasn't prominent in the tales, but the sagas of Middle Earth were religious stories, with faith and fortitude overcoming evil incarnate (Sauron = Satan, etc.):

  The order of evaluaton matters. The equation as written is ambiguous, it could mean either (6/2)*(1+2)=x=9 or 6/(2*(1+2))=x=1. That's why careful programmers put extra parentheses in, even if they really shouldn't be necessary--it shows exactly what the order is, so the next poor soul who has to fix a bug will know without a doubt what was the intended order of evaluation. Otherwise you have to remember something like this correctly (especially right-to-left...OOPS...left to right!):

  The mathematical order of operations does apply. For example (2 + 3) * 2 = 10 while 2 + 3 * 2 = 8. The order of precedence in C is BFDMAS: Brackets (or parentheses), Functions, Division or Multiplication (from left to right, whichever comes first), Addition or Subtraction (also from left to right, whichever comes first).
