  Was this a valid sample, or unintentionally self-selected cases not comparable to the population at large? Are the Witness cases generally a lower risk group?

  Besides being non-smokers and typically employed in lower stress occupations (thus lower cardiac risk in the first place), would the Witnesses who know they are high risk cases (because of anemia, advanced age, general ill health, more radical surgery required, etc.) avoid surgery altogether, because they know they must not have a transfusion if things went wrong?

  Any new light on windows in the KH

  remodeling is being done on the kh in my area.. friends have come to me inquiring about the remodeling.. it,s been two months.

  first they ask , why no windows.. i told them some kh have windows.

  A hall near where I live has framing and trim that look like openings for windows, but the openings are closed off with siding. It's quite visible from the street and the outdoor tables at the Starbucks next door. IMO, it makes the building look shabby and spoils all the hard work they obviously do keeping it clean, nicely painted, and tending the landscaping.

  It's a shame. This would be an attractive building, but having no windows makes it look like a warehouse.

  Churches are dying

  most churches today are apostate.

  using corrupt bibles, singing worldly christian rock music, teaching psychology instead of preaching the word of god, endorsing godless political leaders, et cetera.

  i recently visited a baptist church where the pastor wore blue jeans to the pulpit, spoke psychology instead of preaching, the music was worldly, the niv was their bible, most of the women wore pants, and the only invitation given to lost sinners was to follow jesus.

  How do you know this? Is it impossible for God to have mercy on one whose sin played a pivotal role in the salvation saga? Were Judas' flinging the silver back at the Pharisees and his own tragic death not clear signs of repentance?

  Jesus offered salvation to all: adulterers, condemned criminals, even tax collectors!

  Colorado Custody Case

  i am a catholic and i have a son with a practicing jw.

  we have never been married and i have had sole custody of him since he was born.

  my son's father is taking me back to court for joint decision making and wanting to have visitations during holidays even though he does not celebrate.

  Just my hunch, but maybe he's really fishing for a way to reduce the child support payments (I assume he's paying support.) With shared custody and scheduled visitation, the father is assumed to be supporting your son when he's under his roof. His support payments would be adjusted accordingly.

  I am in fear for my son. He is already having issues in school feeling different from the other kids.

  Get that documented, from the school counselor or teacher etc. The court will want to rule in the child's best interest, and without credible evidence that joint decision-making and scheduled visits would be harmful they usually prefer that both parents be involved.

  Also, refer to Freemind's review of the Watchtower Preparing for Child Custody Cases. That pamphlet is a common form of help the Watchtower provides for custody cases. Knowing what's in the other side's playbook will help you and your attorney prepare your side of the case.

  You should see an attorney experienced in Colorado family law. An initial consultation won't be too expensive, sometimes even free, and will help you find out exactly what you're up against and what avenues are open to you. Gather relevant documents before you go: any existing custody decree, child support orders and payment history, the child's birth certificate or other proof of paternity, reports from school counselors, any written relevant communications between you and the father, and (of course) any court documents you have been served. These establish the details of your case, and one detail could make a huge difference in the outcome.

  Do You Think That You Should Be Punished For Letting Drivers Know There Is A Speed Trap Along Their Route?

  a houston woman made up a sign warning motorists of a speedtrap and she was arrested!.

  in my area we often alert fellow drivers of speed traps by flashing our lights.

  do you think there should be a law against this?.

  During the early days of the Milhous Nixon Memorial Double Nickel Speed Limit, some highway patrolmen would park on top of an overpass, listening on their own CB until they heard the "smokey reports" warning everybody where they were. Then they'd move on down to another overpass and repeat. Properly executed, this allowed one officer to seem to be in three different places at once, slowing down traffic on a long stretch of highway to the legal limit.

  The point of this is, being conspicuous and actively seeking to publicize their whereabouts via the truckers' grapevine was a very effective way to get people driving at safe, legal speeds. The ones who hide out trying to write as many tickets as possible are less effective at slowing traffic--but more effective at generating revenue from traffic fines.

  If the object is traffic safety, let them flash the lights. And trade in the plain-white unmarked cars for a black-and-white cruiser with big reflective "Highway Patrol" decals on every side, and a big light bar on the roof. But if the goal is just to collect fines, they'll keep the enforcement out of sight.

  I think the Society might drop its appeal over the Conti case

  i've been giving some thought to the recent development in which the judge has ruled that the society is barred from completing any property transactions until the appeal is over, which could take up to two years or even more.. i've submitted an article to randy at freeminds in which i basically argue that it is no longer in the society's interests to appeal this case.

  if i correctly understand the restrictions placed on the society by the judge, then the governing body has far more to lose by appealing than they could conceivably gain.. think about it.... by appealing, they buy themselves time in which to formulate a long-term strategy for dealing with the fallout of this case, but will be barred from liquidating $1 billion in property assets at a time of global economic uncertainty when their donations are dwindling.

  there is also no guarantee that their appeal will be upheld.by dropping their appeal, they take a hit and pay $23.8 million but retain the freedom to see through their real estate projects; retain their financial flexibility to respond to dwindling donations, and get to pretend to their followers (as with the un scandal) that it never happened.of course, i am only saying that dropping the appeal would be the only intelligent option for the society, assuming they are aware of how legally precarious their child abuse policies are.

  notjustyet: I would think that if they took the cash and deposited it into a account that the courts had control over, then this hold on selling property would be lifted.

  That would make sense if they have enough cash on hand to fund that account and pay their regular day to day expenses. My impression is that they have plenty of real estate and other physical assets, but not much extra cash in the bank. Their austerity moves suggest this is the case: closing some branches, selling off expensive Brooklyn real estate and moving to a less expensive part of the state, etc. Those are signs of limited cash flow. (In other words, you pay the electric bill with dollars, not real estate holdings).

  A Real and Authentic Letter from a Jehovah's Witness Mother to Her Son

  i found this letter on dave reekie's blog and asked him if i could write a piece about it.

  i am glad that he accepted.. it's so rare to find a real, authentic handwritten letter from a jehovah's witness parent to their disfellowshipped child, so we hope you can read it and show it to any apologists that claim the watchtower society doesn't condone shunning.. you can read the article here.. .

  "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." [Hamlet, Act III, Scene 2] Two sentences from the letter stand out:

  This letter is being written by me with no outside coercion or influence because there are things I want to say to you.

  I must emphasise that what I am about to say to you is not influenced by any other living person, but is purely directed by my conscience and a desire to regain my peaceful friendship with God.

  Not once, but twice she insists that there is no outside influence. This is not the first time I have seen such words in letters from JWs to the DA'd, DF'd or non-believers. Can any (former) elders confirm or deny that this language is suggested by the organization, and whether in writing or passed down orally?

  The phrases "directed by my conscience" and "regain ... friendship with God" say much about the situation. Who directed the formation of the conscience, that now directs her? Who taught her that tearing normal family relationships asunder is necessary to be "friends with God?" The answer to both questions is, of course, the Watchtower leaders. They are not the sort to dine with tax collectors and sinners--after all, it would bring such reproach on the organization if their religion should accept those souls in most need the Lord's mercy!

  Anyway, what should the Society (or any other Organization) do when a known pedofile (or other serious sinner) is in or moves into the congregation ???

  1. Report any and all credible instances of child abuse to the proper authorities, without delay, without exception.
  2. Cooperate fully with any investigation that ensues.
  3. Do not allow any suspected abuser access to children, whether in a formal capacity or as a lay member of the group, regardless whether the children are members of the congregation or not (e.g. door-to-door service).
  4. Require background investigations and training for all having contact with children.
