Has anyone tried to prevent ex-spouse from training the kids as JWs?

i am at the point in my custody battle where i need to decide if i'm gonna "go for the gold" and bring religion into the fight.

my lawyer thinks i have a chance based on the parental alienation aspect of the religion.

i'm df'd and my kids are being raised to turn against me.

What? I don't think that's appropriate for first and second graders. Those films are rated PG-13, as I recall, because of all the Armageddon-like battle scenes. It's not that they aren't good movies, they are. But they're for teens and adults--not young children. Remember that custody decisions are based on what is in "the best interests of the children", so this apparent lack of judgement may be relevant in a custody case. Your attorney should know that your Ex allows this; a lawyer will know whether the court would consider that when making a decision.

When dealing with the children, I agree with Heartbreaker. Be a good and loving parent, don't disparage their other parent (even if he does deserve it!). You are your kids' primary example of what a non-JW is. Don't make the WT propaganda come true; show them an example of a good person who doesn't blindly obey every whim of the F&D Slave-drivers. Keep the long-term goals in mind, that will help you have the courage to act honorably and persevere through the day to day battles with your Ex.

Help please - my wife wants a divorce

i've read some old posts and they don't really fit my situation.. my wife just told me she wants a divorce and that's it after nearly 20 years., she doesn't want to try to work on it.. other posts talk about friends and family.

i have no family and no friends (due to a lot of traveling).. i went back to my hometown a year ago (after many years away) and even then old friends treated me as a stranger, like they've moved on.. i've had a lot of emotional / mental problems, basically a breakdown so have found it impossible to fulfill my role as a husband for many years, emotionally and physically and she said she's had enough, although she's never talked about it before.. she went out and had an unplanned one-night-stand.

i forgive me but she says she doesn't love me anymore.. we both find it very difficult to communicate our feelings.

I'll take you at your word that things are beyond repair with your wife, but be sure about that because it this may be the last chance to do anything before the court gets involved. Go for counseling if you can get her to agree there's something left that's worth saving.

Speaking of courts, don't get caught by surprise. Do you know if she has already has divorce proceedings underway? It usually takes a while for the lawyer to get all the papers in order and file them with the court, so it may already be happening without you knowing about it. The lawyer may try to time the filing to get an advantage: late Friday so there's nothing you can do for several days, or while you are away on business.

Prepare your "Plan B": figure out where you'll stay and how you'll take care of yourself if you come home to find a process server looking for you and new locks on the door. Check into lawyers, how much they charge, how much you must pay up front, what kind of payment terms they offer (don't hire one until you need to, just be prepared to do so quickly). Copy critical financial documents and keep them where you will have access to them, in case you're suddenly forced out of the house. This includes contact numbers, account numbers, bank statements, tax returns and payroll records. CDs or a memory stick will hold a lot of information in a small space, inconspicuous and easy to take with you. Do this quietly: don't cause a scene that will escalate the situation, but do be prepared.

As for yourself, find something positive to focus on. Look for volunteer opportunities, rediscover an old hobby, fix something around the house you've been putting off , join a club, dedicate yourself to a workout plan: just start doing something that helps you feel good about yourself. That will help you have better "up" days and fewer "down" days, whether the divorce happens or not.

You can, you will make it through this. It takes time, it takes effort. The first step is to forgive: not just your wife, but also yourself. Please find the courage to do that.

Grateful Dead, Emmylou Harris, Allison Krause/Union Station. What can I say: Bear's Choice got me hooked on country music--especially older country songs, and bluegrass in particular.

i was born and raised in it.

my father was physically and mentally abusive to my siblings and i. he was inactive from the meetings and service for much of my life.

So, you were disfellowshipped because they spread gossip? You came showing repentance, and were punished because of others' loose talk? Take heart, we know who the real sinners are in that story!

You've been through a lot, and have shown a lot a character just to get this far. I'm glad the abuse has stopped for the last year and a half, but please consider going to counseling with your husband. You really need to get that out of your marriage, all the way down to its roots, so it won't happen again some years down the road. Otherwise another stressful event could start it all over again. You don't want to live your life under that cloud.

Thank you for sharing your story. It was hard to read, and I'm sure it was hard to tell it, too. Keep up the healing!

Perhaps life in the Watchtower paradise is like being a struldbrug. In Gulliver's Travels, these were the rare Luggnaggians who were doomed to immortality. Struldbrugs had eternal life, but not the same way it's depicted on the Watchtower covers:

"That the question therefore was not whether a man would choose to be always in the prime of youth, attended with prosperity and health, but how he would pass a perpetual life under the usual disadvantages which old age brings along with it."

"When they came to fourscore years, which is reckoned the extremity of living in this country, they not only had all the follies and infirmities of other old men, but many more which arose from the dreadful prospect of never dying. i re-read my previouse posts and felt i was less than diplomatic with terry-(i do admire his ability to reply without offence).

so do you need to be a tough minded, and insensitive to survive on discussion boards?.

To start with, I finish about two out of every three postings I start writing with "Cancel" instead of "Submit". Like momma said, sometimes you're better off just keeping quiet and walking away from trouble.

i use to call my mom to brag about the kids ,but now she has past away .

i use to also call my mother -in law ,but now they hardly speak to us .... so you all will have to suffer .

this is my first post, though have been lurking here for some time.

maybe will share my story at some point...... i have been discussing the blood doctrine with a family member.

we discussed the principle behind the law to abstain from blood was to recognise the sanctity of life and god as the life giver when a life was taken and should not apply to transfusions when no life is taken but aim is to preserve life.

Your post addresses one of the first and biggest problems I encountered with Watchtower doctrines.

Look in Leviticus for the origins and nature of the biblical blood prohibitions. The ritual for sacrifice of the burnt offering is the first of many references to the sacrificial blood in that book:

He will then slaughter the bull before YHWH, and the priests descended from Aaron will offer the blood. They will pour it all around the altar which stands at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. [Lev 1:5]

After descriptions of the various sacrifical rituals comes another prohibiton on blood:

Wherever you live, you will never eat blood, whether it be of bird or of beast. Anyone who eats any blood will be outlawed from his people. [Lev 8:26, 27]

What blood does Leviticus refer to in chapters 1-7, human or animal? (Animal.)
Is Leviticus discussing medical treatments or sacrificial rituals? (Sacrificial rituals.)
Were animal sacrifices still practiced during the first century? (Yes, until the destruction of the temple in 70 AD.)
Were blood transfusions used for medical purposes during the first century? (No.)
Do Jehovah's Witness offer burnt animal sacrifices at the Kingdom Hall? (No.)
Why does the Governing Body tell Jehovah's Witnesses to refuse medically appropriate blood transfusions? (To prove loyalty to the Watchtower organization.)
