  BESTSELLERS--who actually buys these things?

  just think, rush limbaugh and bill o'reilly are knocking about on top of the bestseller list to the tune of 52,000+ copies each!.

  i say, who buys these books?.

  i've read killing lincoln, killing kennedy and killing jesus--but, i did it by sitting in the library--not by plopping down $20+ bucks each.. i only read one rush limbaugh book.. i use to be a political junkie but stopped cold turkey exactly 11 months ago.. i no longer watch any political programs or read any political books.. i'm a lot happier for it it, too.. .

  NY44M: Rush Limbaugh is a paranoid delusional political talkshow radio host of the conservative variety who I used to listen to daily. He believes 'there's a liberal conspiracy whose only goal is to destroy the United States, as obviously no one can legitimately hold the opinions held by those damn liberals.' I'm paraphrasing a little bit because it's been a couple years, but that is what he said that finally convinced me to stop listening to him.

  Terry: That looks like a fascinating book. I'll have to have a look at it.

  Did Jesus really exist?

  i had been wondering over the past few years whether there really was a historical jesus at all, until a few months ago when i read bart ehrman's latest book "did jesus exist?

  " initially i was persuaded by his argument that the nt contains multiple sources that testify to jesus' existence.

  but more recently i have been reading the christ myth position of richard carrier and his responses to ehrman.

  Here's an interesting question... Did John Frum (messiah of the cargo cults) really exist? We don't know, and that was in the 1940s, whereas Jesus was 2k years ago.

  Personally, I think there was probably a historical "Jesus", but that little or none of the stories about him ever actually happened (especially the supernatural bits)

  surely the answer is that the americas were discovered by the first humans to get there - almost certainly east asians.

  but the popular answer is almost always columbus.. this view has been under challenge, by some popular writers who argue that other groups made it before columbus.

  a strong arguement can surely be made for northern (viking?

  1. Fresh tissue is indicative of a young age or of a very lucky preservation, such as if it were frozen shortly after death, or any number of other extraordinary circumstances that inevitably happen in a large enough sample.

  2. Smell permeates. If you had a dead animal in your car, the rotting smell in your car wouldn't be indicative of your car decomposing, it would be indicative of there having been a dead animal in your car. The same applies to bones.

  3. As far as I'm aware, they don't use Carbon-14 on dinosaur bones for that particular reason.

  4. Half-life doesn't mean that there won't be any, it means that every 521 the amount of DNA available is halved, not including external factors which might preserve the DNA. Given the collossal amount of DNA that has existed over the ages, some of it is BOUND to have survived. It's not impossible by any means, just very, very rare.

  Prologos: Yes, it is quite possible that there is a maker which decided to hide himself from us. Of course, a universe in which that were true would be indistinguishable from a universe in which it wasn't, so it's a moot point.

  My mom siced some of the locals against me at my former appartment. It was kind of funny how they were trying to preach to me, and would always start out with "this or that happened. We're lucky to have survived. This old world is so terrible". It never fails. I've come to the conclusion that JWs are the most depressing group of people I've ever come into contact with.

  12 STEP PROGRAM and HIGHER POWER

  i know there's been topics previously but how in the world do athiests do the program when they don't use as their support the higher power heard they can use the group, the ocean, etc., but seriously!

  my friend told me they recommend god as the higher power for the program to work in some literature.

  LV101: Some atheists will outright not acknowledge a higher power, and are therefore unable to follow the steps. That being said, atheist is a very broad category as far as belief systems go. Personally, I view the Universe as a higher power, albeit a vast, impartial, and unliving one... but that's what I would use, or attempt to use as the case may be. Of course, that might not be the best one, because the Universe doesn't really care what I do.

  I don't have any formatting tools; it looks like it's defaulting to html, which lets me do things like this and this, which wouldn't work with the normal window with the formatting tools.
