Sunbeam, I have an old coffee grinder that goes by that name.
It's nice meeting you and thanks for sharing your bio. I don't have much advice about dealing with your mother-in-law except to say it sounds like you're handling it as well as can be. As for you becoming a "born again Christian wife," I'll pray for your spouse. You really know how to torture the poor guy, or perhaps you're just getting back at him for dragging you into the JW craziness. Anyway, welcome to the forum; it's nice having you here.

bigboi, We've seen several on this and other forums who gave up scholarships because of the crazy religion. That's a tragedy that keeps hurting throughout life. Have you thought about going back to school, maybe taking one or two courses in the evenings? It was one of the best things I did after exiting the Tower.

bigboi,
I understand playing football without a helmet can cause JW injury. I wonder how he'll make it to all the meetings? Perhaps he'll count time by holding up The Watchtower between plays.

Rutherford as a Bible scholar.
by larc ini have read some very interesting posts from norm, focus, farkel, jan, and alan f regarding the silliness of the wt.
(if i left someone out i apologize forthwith.
i have decided to enter my analysis of joseph franklin rutherford to the mix.. during rutherford's administration, he was referred to as "the world's foremost bible scholar.

AlanF,
Such ideas tickle the ears of the foolish, and empower the unethical over the foolish.
That's an astute observation, and causes me to wonder about leaders offering simple answers to complex societal problems. It's fairly easy understanding why the gullible falls for simple answers, but the ethics of giving simple answers is intriguing, when the one in control knows better.
For example, politicians get elected by hiring more police, knowing crime goes down when people have living-wage jobs, not necessarily more cops on the beat. Religious leaders offer life eternal, knowing they don't know, but saying the expected because it makes people feel better. Of course, there are stages of unethical behavior that goes beyond the above. Sects like the Watchtower travel to the ethical extreme by telling followers to believe the unbelievable while forcing their lunacy with the gun of shunning pointed to the follower's head. As you said, it's an organization of unethical people holding power over the foolish.
The foolish flock to the one offering simple societal or religious answers. The Tower will always have a pool of people to suck in, and forums like this are there for followers that awaken. (It's always interesting seeing how pissed new ones get when they realize what happened.)

Hey there Brother larc,
I was not "stumbled" by people in the organization. I was stumbled by bad ideas in the organization.
I think that sums it up nicely. It's nearly impossible for an outsider or former Witness to make up stuff loonier than pages from Watchtower publications. Nice thread, larc!

JAVA
DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR WT BOOKS, ETC.!
Keep them boxed up for awhile--you might be able to use them for research. Once they are gone you'll pay big bucks getting replacements. I did that years ago--I'm VERY SORRY about that today!!!

Transition period of Christ rule .
by MacHislopp inhave you ever read this?.
" ...then war in heaven would result in satan's being cast to earth, woe on earth,.
and christ would rule in the midst of his enemies for a period no exceeding one.

JAVA
MacHislopp,
Not to worry, it's just the Tower "tacking into the wind" with "new light." However, don't stand too close when you're down wind of Tower's Paradise boat.

"Aye Aye, Cap'n!" Bye Bye Sister.
by Englishman inup until yesterday i thought that jw's could only be df'd for marrying if they were not "scriturally free" to do so, that is, for example, if the jw's considered a persons marriage to be adulterous.. not so, however.. i spoke to my ex-wife yesterday, our first conversation in many, many years.
she told me that she had been disfellowshipped for marrying, because her non-witness husband is a lieutenant in the royal navy.. apparantly, if you marry a non-dub you are just branded as weak and "unevenly yoked".
if you marry someone in the armed forces, then you are out on your ear.. what a shower these dubs are!.
-
JAVA
Englishman,
When you're in God's Army it's best not to sleep with enemy soldiers unless you're a spy. Your ex should have told the elders she was gathering information from the military of this old system of things, and was going to hand it over to General Jesus. Now as a disfellowshipped JW, she can't do that--All Is Lost! I guess we'll need to wait another 120 plus years before the Great War.

Motivated by Pure Love

Farkel,
Yeah, I see a whole bunch of "love" eminating from those quotes.
Thanks for putting this thread together and allowing the Watchtower Society to impale itself on its words. The Watchtower quotes do not need commentary because they demonstrate the venom coming from a sect wishing death to anyone disbelieving their madness. Living under the Society's theocratic government is a paradise built on a foundation of love--yeah, I can see that now!

Great post, Alan--thanks for digging out some old archives. I'll bet you had to dust the room after pulling these files!
BTW, are you in contact Jeffrey Burrows these days? Always had to get the dictionary out when he posted on Philia years ago.
