  The CO's visit

  this past week was the visit of our circuit overseer.

  i know what you are thinking so before i post some of his comments that i personally found interesting, i only went to keep peace in the family and not give rise to suspicion about my true feelings.

  so with that said, here are some things that grabbed my attention.. 1) his talk thursday nite was about being successful and how the world's view of success is far different than the organizations.

  Hello OrangeBlossom, and thanks for the report.

  "We should not encourage our children to be financially secure, but financially responsible."

  The Tower does everything they can to stay "financially secure" at the financial expense of followers. They encouraged followers to sell homes and businesses in order to slave full time for the Tower, while the Society pads their nest egg and buys property from literature sells. They've encouraged young people to forgo college education so the Tower can reap the benefits of full-time slaves. It's difficult for followers to become "financially responsible" when they have dead-end jobs with low pay, and few benefits.

  The Watchtower Society has become nothing more than a publishing corporation using religion, fear, and high control to gorge itself on the labor of others by encouraging followers to meagerly scrape by. The Tower requires booksellers, not college students--apparently that hasn't changed.

  Nourishment for the Spirit

  my observation is that persons who 1) heal/adjust the most rapidly from their jw experience and 2) seem to have the most joy in life are those who read, read, read, in pursuit of what i call nourishment for the spirit.

  i've really enjoy the pithy aphorisms you use here, which suggests you've distilled some wisdom from somewhere.

  i'm going to ask your help in this thread.

  Hello Tina,

  To leave crutches aside and explore what is unknown...I realize not everyone can or wants to do this.I mean we're talking total personal responsibility,and ethical responsibility to others.

  I work with many professionals with advanced degrees, many who are Christian. I don't believe most of them use faith as a crutch of the unknown or to excuse themselves from ethical responsibility. I think most of them believe because of social influences more than avoiding ethical responsibility. Of course we can't really get into the mind of another to determine beyond doubt why others do and believe what they do.

  However, when I hear folks like Jerry Falwell, it tends to refute my above thoughts. BTW, I'm working on those earring; one or two hoops per earring?

  Hi Jerry,

  and a close look at St. Augustine who believed that sin was transmitted via semen and that we are all infected thereby.

  NPR news was on while reading your comments, and as luck would have it, the program had a small segment about St. Augustine. The program said St. Augustine enjoyed the company of numerous women (I wonder if this is genetic with politicians). Adding their thoughts to yours, I conclude that Augustine thought he was perfect and wanted to pass perfection on to as many as possible.

  Hello Tina,

  I'm always amazed at how people want another belief system handed to them. It's a personal journey that takes time ,effort, personal responsibility. I think some folks are simply intellectually lazy.

  You made some interesting comments about personal beliefs. To a large extent I believe most people except the beliefs they grew up with or beliefs they picked up as young adults. Unless there is a reason to change, that works because their religion isn't weird and out of step with the larger society. Yeah, I think it's easy to become spiritually lazy when things work and there is little reason to change. However, folks exiting the Tower step out of the comfort zone, and need to replace the void that's left. They usually do that in the following ways:

  After they pass through the foolishness of the "where else can you go" stage, the road forks 5 ways.
  

  • God does not exist, and religion promotes myth
  • God exists, and one needs to find the correct religion
  • God exists and can be found in most Christian religions
  • God exists, but religions are not necessary and usually get in the way
  • God might or might not exist, no one really knows

  Most exiting JWs start off on one of the above paths. They might stay there for awhile or skip over to another path. It's all part of filling the void left when leaving the Tower. Some journeys require more effort than others, and even the "intellectually lazy" can find a path defined by religionist before them.
