by Beck_Melbourne inwhen i was in dub-dom....i used to hate eating out....my ex always made us bow our heads and close our eyes tight shut while he gave thanks out loud.

The first time God buys my meal I'll give him thanks.
Interesting comment, Ken P. When I go a restaurant this evening, I'll inform the owner I'm not going to pay, but will thank God for the food. I wonder what kind of service I'll get?
I think prayers in restaurants is a way of appearing holier than others, which makes it a turn-off for me. I'm sure some restaurant supplications are earnest, but believe most are nothing more than a phony dog and pony show.

Watchtowers million dollar scam
by GeddyLee inback in the late eighties i was on the committee to build our cities new double kingdom hall so that all five halls would be under one roof.
we needed to come up with five hundred thousand dollars to complete the new hall, so we had a kingdom hall fund drive where the local brothers would raise the needed funds.
after two years we had collected the half million dollars, and guess where that money went????????

This is a great thread because it fully demonstrates the greed and self-serving posture of the Society. The easiest folks to con are people trusting the con-artist. The Society has 5 or 6 million followers willing to believe anything coming from "God's Organization." It's a wonder JWs own their socks after the Tower shacks them down when they buy another building for the Watchtower.
The Tower does not openly pass collection plates at the meetings--that would be honest begging. On the other hand, a con-artist picks their victims pocket, and the fleeced don't know they've been sheared. I'm sure the Watchtower has another name for "Quick Builds," QUICK CASH !

dantheman,
I don't think Penton was "soft on Russell," just fair and historical. As far as I know, Penton's book is the best read on the JW Movement from a historical point of view. When one looks at the full scope and history from the Bible Students to Jehovah's Witnesses, Russell was not mean-spirited and controlling. Shunning and other high-control techniques came out of the Rutherford camp, and was far removed from Russell's vision. I think you'll enjoy Penton's book as you continue through the various stages of JW history.

I ordered Jehovah's Witnesses: Portrait of a Contemporary Religious Movement, by Andrew Holden, from Amazon.com. Has anyone here read this book? The book description from Amazon.com reads:
Book Description
This is the first major study of this enigmatic religious society. By examining the Jehovah's Witnesses' dramatic recent expansion, Andrew Holden reveals the dependency of this quasi-totalitarian movement on the very physical and cultural resources which have brought about the privatization of religion, the erosion of community and the separation of "fact" from supernatural faith. Asking vital questions about the ambivalent relationship of spiritual meaning to modern secular materialism, Jehova's Witnesses reconsiders the Witnesses' ascetic faith at once as an inverted form of pseudo-corporate "branding," and as an anti-modern quest for certainty in a hostile world of relativism and risk. -

On the other hand, if you wish to continue to press for a judicial hearing on allegations my client absolutely denies then it certainly would appear to make your stated intentions disingenuous with regard to your actions.
In other words, it looks like the elders are lying. A Kangaroo Court set up to punish you for exposing how the Watchtower Society protects child molesters might be seen as rendering "spiritual aid in Christian love" by the Society's attack dogs--but this is nothing more than a setup for punitive actions. It's great when members insist on fair play, and open disclosure. Folks who have something to hide don't like that!
Thanks for the post, Bill.

Shaking Hands with Death - Part 3
by Amazing inshaking hands with death part 3: .
the angioplasty begins: the cardiologist arrived from the other hospital, and started telling everyone what he needed.
more medical staff showed up soon after, and the room was insane ... just like on tv ... short tempers demanding this or that device or assistance, people yelling out my vital readings, and i got a brief glance of the operating room door with people in green outfits, head caps, and face masks bopping in and out.

Amazing,
Welcome back, and thanks for a great post--it's one of the best I've read! I'm very happy you're doing well, and hope that continues. Your description of finding God in the professionals at the hospital, and support from friends was insightful; thanks again for sharing.

What's the one thing you miss about the WTS?
by Naeblis inthere are times when ilook back fondly on my days in the witnesses, especially when i think on the congregation get togethers we would have every once in awhile (not too often) people from our hall and sometimes others would show up (not too many) and good times were had by all.
this is how the schedule usually went.. 8pm: arrive at the community centre.
8:05pm: scope the room.

Jamestown man indicted on 30 counts of rape
Associated PressXENIA | A Jamestown man is in the Greene County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond after a county grand jury indicted him on 30 counts of rape.
The man, 38, is accused of raping his daughter repeatedly from 1999, when she was in seventh grade, until 2001, when she told him to stop, according to county sheriff’s Maj. William Harden.
Deputies were notified about the case after the brother saw the girl performing oral sex on her father, Harden said.
